2 Featured Speakers: Looking is not Seeing and Listening is not Hearing: The Use of Arts to Inform Nursing Science Linda Honan Pellico, PhD, APRN Yale College of Nursing West Haven, CT Linda Honan Pellico is an Associate Professor at Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) and Specialty Director of the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing Program. She has taught in this program since 1989, served as Curriculum Coordinator and been a consultant nationally to graduate entry programs in other universities. She spearheaded the development of a creative writing award at Yale School of Nursing and created the books, Do you see what I see? which are compilations of years of student journaling. She developed the Looking is not seeing and listening is not hearing program at YSN, which uses art and music to support the development of nursing students physical assessment skills. Her research reveals that diagnostic observations can be significantly improved by training in the visual examination of works of art, that the narratives of student experiences can give insight into the process of learning nursing, and most recently, that aural training with music improves auscultative abilities. She has received grant funding from Sigma Theta Tau, Delta Mu chapter; the National League for Nursing (NLN), and most recently from Johnson & Johnson/Society for the Arts in Healthcare Partnership to Promote the Arts in Healing grant program. She recently published the first medical surgical textbook for accelerated nursing programs and has been recognized with numerous awards for her teaching and mentoring. The Spirit of Nursing: Who we are as a Profession and What the Future Holds Donna M. White, RN, PhD, CNS, CADAC Lemuel Shattuck Hospital-Department of Public Heath Jamaica Plain, MA Donna McCarten White is the Addiction Specialist for the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, a Public Health Hospital for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
