1 Andy Warhol inspired flower prints student learning guide Student Learning: Students will be able to explain who Andy Warhol was as an artist and the context of his artwork. Students will examine the idea of ownership of an image in art and be able to understand some of the issues involved in copyright violation. Students can demonstrate an understanding of the process of gelli-plate printmaking. Students can demonstrate an understanding of the process of creating digital drawing/painting. Students can explain the aesthetic view of formalism. Students will be able to understand how to use a color wheel as well as being able to identify color schemes- monochromatic, analogous, primary, secondary, intermediate, warm, cool, neutral, and National Core Arts Standards: 6 th grade Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. VA:Cr.2.1.6a: Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches in making works of art and design. Anchor Standard 3: Refine and complete artistic work. VA:Cr.3.1.6a: Reflect on whether personal artwork conveys the intended meaning and revise accordingly. Presenting: Anchor Standard 5: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation. VA:Pr.5.1.6a: Individually or collaboratively, develop a visual plan for displaying works of art, analyzing exhibit space, the needs of the viewer, and the layout of the exhibit. VA:Cn a: Analyze how art reflects changing times, traditions, resources, and cultural uses. Vocabulary: 1. Line: diagonal, vertical, horizontal, zigzag, curved 2. Color Wheel: an organizational tool for using color 3. Color Scheme: a specific plan of colors often based on their placement on the color wheel a. Monochromatic- one color with dark shades and light tints of the color (pink, red, dark red) b. Neutral- black, brown, gray, white c. Warm: reds, oranges, yellows d. Cool: blues, greens and violets e. Analogous: three to four colors side by side on the color wheel that share a common hue (yellowgreen, green, blue-green f. Complementary: two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel (red and green) g. Primary colors: the colors that make other colors red, yellow, blue h. Secondary colors: orange, green, and violet i. Intermediate colors: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet 4. Stylized: descriptive of works based on forms in the natural world, but simplified or distorted for design purposes 5. Visual Texture: texture that is not real- but through its visual appearance gives the illusion of texture 6. Geometric Shapes: precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas. Basic shapes include circles, squares, triangles, and so forth. 7. Freeform Shapes: also called organic shapes. Irregular, uneven shapes. Examples of freeform shapes are in ink drop and object s shadow. 8. Unity: The quality of wholeness or oneness that is achieved through the effective use of the elements and principles of design. Unity can be achieved through simplicity, harmony, repetition, proximity, and continuation. 9. Formalism: aesthetic theory of art that emphasizes the design qualities that appear in the subject of the work. Some critics think that the most important factor in a work of art is the composition; they evaluate the arrangement of the elements of art using the principles of design. 10. Pop Art: a movement in art mostly associated with New York and the 1960 s that celebrated commonplace objects elevating popular culture to the level of fine art. Pop Art often incorporated commercial images. Artists that are associated with Pop Art include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. 11. Copyright: the exclusive right to make copies, license and otherwise exploit a literary, musical or artistic work Student Learning Plan: = There is a video or another resource available on my website for this step. Color Theory Review: Color Schemes: Students will be able to understand how to use a color wheel as well as being able to identify color and schemes- monochromatic, analogous, primary, secondary, intermediate, warm, cool, neutral, and Color wheel: 20 points 3. Practice color schemes and color mixing How to make a tint How to make a shade How to make orange How to make green How to make violet How to make R-O, Y-O, R-V, B-V, Y-G, B-G How to make gray How to identify 9 color schemes Color scheme activity: 20 points Students will be able to understand how to use a color wheel as well as being able to identify color and schemes- monochromatic, analogous, primary, secondary, intermediate, warm, cool, neutral, and 4. PowerPoint on copyright and aesthetic question. Student discussion and response to aesthetic copyright question. Students will examine the idea of ownership of an image in art and be able to understand some of the issues involved in copyright violation. Written response: 10 points 5. Digital Art: Students will use Microsoft Paint to digitally draw/paint flowers based on artwork by Andy Warhol. Students can demonstrate an understanding of the process of creating digital drawing/painting.

4 Must include 4 flowers and demonstrate only one of the 9 color schemes 6. Gelli-Plate Prints: Working within groups, students will create gelli-plate prints incorporating flowers and create a collection of printed images which will later be divided among the group for print collages. Students can demonstrate an understanding of the process of gelli-plate printmaking. 7. Refine and Complete printmaking collage Collage must include 4 printed flowers in one of the 9 color schemes and have painted lines within same color scheme accenting the flowers. 8. Mat artwork: Digital artwork printmaking collage Students can explain the aesthetic view of formalism. Students can carefully prepare artwork for presentation Presenting: Anchor Standard 5: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation 9. Art History Criticism Activity: Andy Warhol: Reading and Questions 30 points : reading and question files available on my website Students will be able to explain who Andy Warhol was as an artist and the context of his artwork through a PowerPoint presentation, class discussions and a reading assignment.
