Pastor Joe Snyder August 25, Corinthians 10: Corinthians 10:23-33 All For the Glory of God Being other-person-centered is a key character trait of being a Christ-Follower. 1 Corinthians 10: Corinthians 10:27-29a SUMMARY OF HOW WE SHOULD ACT IN OUR SPIRITUAL FREEDOM: Concerning the weaker conscience (younger Christian), and meat sacrificed to idols (1 Cor. 8) Paul s words: Don t eat it! Principle #1: Don t exercise your rights, if it offends or hinders younger believer s growth. Concerning the public pagan feasts and meat sacrificed to idols (1 Cor. 10:14-22) Paul s words: Don t go! Principle #2: Worshipping idols, of any kind, is ultimately worship of Satan. Concerning a private unbeliever meal in their house (1 Cor. 10:27-29a) Paul s Words: Eat, and don t make it awkward! (unless Principle #1 comes into play) Principle #3: It s always about others.

1 Corinthians 10:29b-31 Every aspect of every believer s life is an opportunity to bring honor and glory to the Father! 1 Corinthians 10:32-33 How is God making you into a fisher of men? Who is God placing on your heart to fish for? What will you do? What would it look like for you to bring Glory to God At work At school In your thoughts In your language In your attitude In your marriage With your children With your money With your hobbies With your church family In your worship In your sexuality In your neighborhood With those in need

SPENDING TIME ALONE WITH JESUS * WEEK OF AUGUST 25, 2013 DAY ONE Read 1 Corinthians chapter 10. Write down verse 31. Now, re-write verse 31 in your own words and add in your own commentary. What does this verse mean in your own life? Or, what should it mean? Even take time today to prayerfully consider the list on the left about what it would look like for you to bring glory to God in each of those areas. Ask God to show you where things haven t been glorifying to Him and how you can glorify Him in those things - whether you are presently or not. But ask Him for His opinion, don t just assume your own thoughts. He knows what He likes best. Is God showing you anything today? What will you do today to respond to what God is saying? Read Psalm 24. Reflect and respond back to God what stands out to you in this Psalm today.

DAY TWO 1 Corinthians 10:24 says, Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. We ll interact with that verse, and others from 1 Corinthians 10, tomorrow. Right now, though, the question could be asked, who does his neighbor refer to? And that was a similar question asked to Jesus. So, today, we re going to take a look back at another passage in Scripture, and just take our time imagining the story and making observations from it. This concept will help us then in 1 Corinthians. Read Luke 10: Write down any observations you can make about this story. Think about each character - what they did or did not do, what they said, where their hearts were, what the point of the story was, what Jesus was teaching, etc. Take your time and really picture it all and write down anything you see. Now, how does this story relate to you? Where do you find yourself in this story? What are similarities or differences in your life to what happened here? What is God teaching you today?

DAY THREE Read 1 Corinthians 10: After reading about our neighbor yesterday and now coming to these verses today (specifically verses 23-24), consider the following questions: How would you describe (in as much detail as you can) what it means to be other-person-centered? How does that description relate to your life? What parts describe you, and what parts don t describe you? What are some ways you need to change in order to be more other-personcentered? Take time to ask God about how to practically apply this today. Ask Him to show you your neighbor and how to seek their good today, and how to recognize when you re just merely seeking your own good. This is not the way our flesh normally thinks - we need the Holy Spirit s help to open our eyes to these things. Practice seeking things that build up others around you and be sensitive to when the Holy Spirit tugs on your heart to show you if you re thinking too much of yourself.

DAY FOUR Read 1 Corinthians 10: We discussed on Sunday that there is a principle here in this passage (specifically verses 25-29), that we can learn that we need to be careful that our (sometimes) seemingly legalistic ways do not end up putting up walls to reaching the spiritually lost, instead of doing everything we can to build bridges of connection with the spiritually lost! We sometimes need to modify our actions for the sake of others. That is the Christ-like thing. Today, let s go back over the summary of how we should act in our spiritual freedom that we got on Sunday (or is listed below). Go back over the scriptures involved in each principle and consider the questions below: * 1 Corinthians 8 Concerning the weaker conscience (younger Christian), and meat sacrificed to idols Paul s words: Don t eat it! Principle #1: Don t exercise your rights, if it offends or hinders younger believer s growth. * 1 Corinthians 10:14-22 Concerning the public pagan feasts and meat sacrificed to idols Paul s words: Don t go! Principle #2: Worshipping idols, of any kind, is ultimately worship of Satan * 1 Corinthians 10:17-29 Concerning a private unbeliever meal in their house Paul s Words: Eat, and don t make it awkward! (unless principle #1 comes into play) Principle #3: It s always about others. Can you think of any time when any of these principles applied to a situation you have faced in the past? How did it? What did you do right or wrong in that situation? Can you envision any situation that you could potentially face where any of these principles would apply? What do these principles teach you regarding how you should respond if that situation arises? Is there any area of your life that violates any of these principles presently? How does all this apply to you today? What is God teaching you and what will you do about it?

DAY FIVE Read 1 Corinthians 10: Now, also read the following passages of Scripture (jotting down anything that stands out to you or that you want to remember about what it said) and then consider the question below: 1 Corinthians 9:12 1 Corinthians 9:19 1 Corinthians 9:22 1 Corinthians 10:33 From all these passages, what is the main focus that it all comes back to for Paul? It is interesting what it has become today, to be a Christ-follower and how OPTIONAL it has become, to radically engage in the mission. Now read Matthew 4: What does this teach? What was Jesus after in the lives of His followers? It is such an important question to ask ourselves what are we being made into? And here is the very sobering truth if it is not fishers of men, then we are not following Jesus! Because when Jesus said to follow Him, that is what He makes us into all of us! On Sunday, we considered these two questions let s prayerfully consider them again today: How is God making you into a fisher of men? Who is God placing on your heart to fish for? What will you do?

HOW TO BECOME A CHRIST FOLLOWER STEP 1: STEP 2: STEP 3: STEP 4: Understand that God loves you and He wants you to live in peace with Him and to receive eternal life. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1) For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23b) Realize that we all often choose to disobey God and go our own selfish ways. This is called sin and it separates us from God. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God the wages of sin is death. (Romans 3:23; 6:23a) But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2) Believe that Jesus Christ is the answer to this problem of separation from God. He died on the cross and rose from the grave to pay the penalty for our sin - completely bridging the gap between us and God. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24) Receive Christ as your Savior by believing in His message and trusting in Him alone to save you. A. Admit your need as a sinner. B. Be willing to turn from your sins. C. Believe that Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave D. Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. What to pray: Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am sinful and I need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died to pay the penalty for my sin. I want to turn from my sin nature and follow You instead. I invite You to come into my heart and life. In Jesus name. Amen. Through this sincere prayer Christ will give you new life you are born into God s family!
