1 CLASSIFICATION: SALARY LEVEL: WORK YEAR: Classified Employee Range 38 Classified Salary Schedule 12 months DEFINITION Under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance Operations and with direction from the Maintenence Supervisor and/or Crafts Leader, within a broad framework of standard policy and procedures, to perform at journey level in a skilled and/or specialized craft or trade as related to maintenance, repair, alteration, and equipment repair duties related to work on District buildings, grounds, pools, and related equipment to include (1) grounds facilities, such as sprinklers systems, fences, playground equipment, swimming pools, and roads, and (2) buildings, such as roof leaks, holes in walls and tile floor repair; utilizing carpentry, cabinet/furniture making, painting, plumbing, electrical, concrete, and/or mechanical repair skills; and to perform skilled and/or specialized labor in a instructional capacity, and performs job related duties as assigned by supervisor. Crafts workers may regularly supervise and instruct assistants to ensure that the work assignments of the group are carried out. While the primary assignment is to perform skilled journey level work, incumbents may spend a minor percentage of time requesting materials and making time and material estimates for jobs. Normally a position is assigned to specialize in one of the trades. While the principle assignment is to perform skilled journey level work, incumbents may spend a minor percentage of time requesting materials, and in making time and material estimates for jobs. Incumbents may regularly supervise and instruct assistants. Prepare estimates of time, labor and materials. Prepare reports reflecting daily operations and project status Maintain automated and manual records Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment of the appropriate trade Clean work area upon completion of project Provide guidance and training in the appropriate trade to other maintenance personnel. May have lead responsibility on special projects Work from blueprints and sketches 1
2 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Essential Duties (Continued): ADDENDUM FOR CARPENTER: Perform general and specialized carpentry work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, partitions, forms, cabinets, floors, roofs, doors, windows, wood fixtures and furniture Repair, replace, and/or construct wood structures such as doors and locks, office cabinets, tables, desks, chairs, counters, walls, and partitions Perform general and specialized carpentry work in the construction and remodeling of District building and other related structures Maintain and service carpentry tools and equipment Repair, replace, or construct roof, flooring, ceilings, and ceiling tiles, etc. Perform carpentry work in conformance to appropriate building, health, and safety codes and standards ADDENDUM FOR ELECTRICIAN: Design, install, inspect, repair and/or maintain all electrical fixtures, controls, systems, wiring, and lighting, such as conduit and circuits, interior and exterior wiring, wall, floor, and ceiling receptacles, switches, outlets, fixtures, heaters, radiant heat boilers, motors, fire and security alarms, and a variety of other electrical units Install and maintain power distribution systems, transformers, and circuit breaker systems Perform all electrical work in conformance to building and safety codes Maintain and repair fire alarms, security alarms, master clock and bell systems, and a variety of other mechanical/electrical equipment & systems Inspect (troubleshoots) electrical systems, motors, and wiring for compliance to building and safety codes Wire new and altered buildings Assemble lighting fixtures Install, test, and maintain storage batteries Operate, maintain, and monitor emergency electrical generating equipment Install electrical panel boards and emergency lighting systems Maintain and make electrical repairs to welders, printing presses, kilns, scoreboards, intercom systems, etc. Upgrade electrical systems to meet new or existing code requirements and standards Repair kitchen ranges, ovens, and dishwashers ADDENDUM FOR ELECTRONICS: Operate electronic testing and measuring devices specific to the requirements of diagnosing malfunctions of electronics equipment Use precision repair and calibration tools in the repair, overhaul, and general maintenance of electronics equipment Operate, maintain, repair, and test complex electronics equipment Install, repair, adjust, maintain various types of electrical and audio/visual recording, amplification, and playback systems and devices Assemble, modify, and install equipment according to schematics and rough sketches. Draft details and prepare diagrams of technical improvements, additions or adaptations Design simple circuits with various components and assists in the design of complex components. Install, modify, and test systems and documents modifications. 2
3 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Essential Duties (Continued): ADDENDUM FOR GLAZER: Replace broken windows to include glazing, applying putty, etc. Coordinate maintenance of solar units Fit and install glass for prefabricated window frames, doors Provide advice regarding the type of glass to use on doors and window casings ADDENDUM FOR HEATING, VENTILATION, AND AIR CONDITIONING: Monitor, repair or replace steam and hot water heating systems, broken valves, pipes, and faucets, boiler systems Operate and monitor pressure boiler systems and maintain proper steam pressure and water levels, cleans, oils, and adjust boiler equipment Repair or replace thermostats, gas valves, and damper motors on boilers Monitor water and sewer lines, make minor repairs when necessary Install, replace, or repair air conditioning systems, exhaust fans, compressors, cooling units, and heat exchangers Cut and thread pipe Work from blueprints and sketches Perform general maintenance involving replacing filters, routine oiling of parts and motors, adjusting belts, cleaning, and preventative maintenance Repair and service motor appliances, generators, control equipment, switches, fans, pneumatic heating systems ADDENDUM FOR LOCKSMITH: Install, repair, rebuild and open mechanical and electronic locks, locking systems, door closures and locking devices Inspect, evaluate, and repair and/or replace door hardware systems to assure proper operation. Assist with the installation of doors. Cut new or duplicate keys using key cutting machines according to specifications. Disassemble locks, such as padlocks, safelocks and door locks; repair or replace worn tumblers, springs and other parts Insert new or repaired tumblers into lock to change combination. Provide advice regarding the type of hardware to use on doors and casings. ADDENDUM FOR MASON: Install and repair block, brick, and concrete walls, including estimation of labor and equipment needed to do the jobs Mix, pour, and finish concrete Install and repair concrete slabs, sidewalks, and storm gutters, including building forms and pouring and finishing concrete Repair stucco walls, plastering, and tile surfaces Lay floor/wall tiles 3
4 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Essential Duties (Continued): ADDENDUM FOR PAINTER: Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, scraping, sandpapering or dissolving previous paint coatings. Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk or putty. Tape, spackle, and finish dry wall Apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, or other protective or decorative finishes to various surfaces to include, walls, ceilings, fences, floors, woodwork, and trim work using rollers, brush, or spray Remove fixtures, spread dropcloths and cover surfaces to protect during painting Select, mix, and match paints Stain and finish furniture, pains and touch up signs and may hang wall coverings Erect, rig, move scaffolding and platforms ADDENDUM FOR PLUMBER: Install, maintain, monitor, and repair all plumbing fixtures and equipment, including toilets, sinks, water heaters and boilers Install, maintain, monitor, and repair water piping, and taps water and sewer mains and laterals Install hot water systems (gas and electric) Cut and thread pipe Monitor, repair or replace water, gas, or sewer lines and drains, steam and hot water heating systems, broken valves, pipes, and faucets, boiler systems Unplug or clear drains and lines connected with plumbing fixtures and water or sewer systems Perform specialized plumbing work in conformance to appropriate building, health, and safety codes and standards Make emergency repairs and adjustments to plumbing equipment including pipes, washers and gaskets, faucets, floats and valves, toilets, sinks, water heaters, and boilers Other Related Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor Participate in available training to meet new safety and/or technology standards Attend meetings related to assignment 4
5 PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position 2. Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone and office machines 3. Vision sufficient to read handwritten and printed materials, blueprints and schematics; and the display screen of various office equipment and machines 4. Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations in normal range (approximately 60 decibels) 5. Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups 6. Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, crawl, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead 7. Physical stamina sufficient to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time 8. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions 9. Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps, and ladders; drive an automobile, and to respond to emergency situations 10. Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry 50 or more pounds frequently and 80 pounds occasionally with assistance; push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment weighing 80 or more pounds with assistance, and to move heavy weights with wheeled manual aids 11. Sustain heavy physical effort for 8 hours 12. Exhibit a full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation, shoulder abduction and adduction, elbow flexion and extension, shoulder extension and flexion range of motion capable of reaching and operating bus and communications controls 13. Exhibit a full range of motion for back lateral flexion, hip flexion and extension, and knee flexion 14. Use respirators for personal protections up to 8 hours per day for strenuous physical effort, 6 hours per day for moderate physical effort, 4 hours per day for light physical effort 15. Ability to work in a safe and effective manner in the following; at various elevated heights on ladders, scaffolding, rigging, and roofs, or in narrow or restricted spaces, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time 16. Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to perform fine motor skills during maintenance procedures and operation of both manual and power hand tools 17. Operate a variety of motor vehicles and maintenance equipment, including a forklift, in a safe and effective manner 18. Safely operate a variety of powered industrial vehicles, equipment, and tools associated with building repairs, maintenance, preventative maintenance, construction, welding, plumbing, pool maintenance, painting, glazing, locksmith, irrigation, heating/ventilation, electrical, carpentry, and grounds keeping 19. Work with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction 20. Physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, pollen, specific agents/chemicals, cleaners, foul smells 21. Work in high noise level areas 22. Work in a wide range of temperatures; work in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to extreme weather conditions May have to work around power machinery capable of causing severe injury and near hazardous materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 5
6 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate selection process for this position; Education and Experience: Completion of formal or informal education, generally a high school diploma equivalency, sufficient to assure the ability to read and write English and to perform arithmetic calculations at the level required for successful job performance. At least three (3) years experience at a journey level in one or more of the required crafts areas, coursework and/or formal training is desirable Three (3) or more years in one or more of the basic repair, maintenance, building, or construction fields, (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, welding, masonry, and/or glazing) Licenses and Certificates: A valid Class C California Driver s License and evidence of appropriate insurance is required A valid First Aid and CPR Certificate may be required A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate selection process for this position; Knowledge of: Methods, procedures, tools, and equipments of the building trade as it relates to assigned area of expertise (e.g., electrical, electronics, plumbing, heating, carpentry, glazing, painting, etc.) Safe vehicle driving practices Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in a variety of trades and maintenance work, including welding, masonry, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing Safety rules and regulations related to equipment usage, building trades and various site locations within the District Basic building and construction trades maintenance and repair, to include basic carpentry, electrical, heating, plumbing, painting, welding and/or glazing Safe handling of chlorine and acid for swimming pool maintenance and other hazardous materials Ability to: Exercise independent judgment in the selection of methods and procedures used within specialized area of general building maintenance work Assist in preparing cost estimates for assigned projects Drive power-driven equipment safely and efficiently Perform heavy physical labor Operate a forklift Motivate and instruct other employees, set the pace of production Read and understand sketches, blueprints, and diagrams as well as understand and carry out oral and written instructions Quickly and effectively diagnose problems and take appropriate action to resolve them Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing Meet the physical requirements necessary for the successful performance of required duties Establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including students, school personnel, parents, vendors, co-workers, and the community Maintain regular attendance and punctuality Keep materials, equipment, and facilities in a clean and orderly fashion Store and use hazardous materials in a safe manner 6
