A1: At 3 and 5 respectively, having fun, but they love music, dancing, lego, arts & craft, dressing up as super heroes and generally making mischief Q2: What is a typical day for Theo and Oskar? Do they/will they go to school or are/will be home schooled? A2: Theo s in year 1 at mainstream school 5-days-a-week, and Oskar s in pre-school three afternoons a week Q3: Do mum and dad work at home? A3: Mum does Q4: Do they have pets? Would they like/plan to have pets? A4: A dog Q5: What makes a home for them? A5: Please see the answers to the following questions Q6: Are there any views that are particular important for the family? A6: The garden and the sky Q7: Is there anything in particular that you like or dislike about your current house? A7: Dark and pokey Q8: What do you and the boys do to relax/switch off? A8: Watch a movie, sit by the fire, lie in the garden, sing and dance Q9: What kind of homes do the Taussig s like? A9: Light and spacious ones Q10: What drew Nick and Klara to the house? A10: The garden and the area Headley Heath and the Surrey Hills an area of outstanding natural beauty 1
Q11: We understand the garden was likely to be a huge drawing point to enable the boys to play outside, but was there anything else? A11: Please see the answer to Q10. Q12: What areas of the home - either in their new house or previous houses - do they use the most or place the most importance on? A12: Living room and kitchen Q13: How long do they see themselves living in that house? A13: A long time Q14: What are the family s hobbies or favourite activities? A14: The outdoors Q15: Does the family already have an occupational therapist they work with and will he / she be involved in the design process? A15: We still wait for an OT. Surrey County Council is underfunded and overstretched Q16: When you spend time together as a family, what do you usually do, and what s most important to you? A16: Just being together Q17: What do meal times mean to you as a family, your favourite memories in the kitchen as well as the challenges of family meals and the things you don t like about your current kitchen and you d like to change? A17: It s like a dark dingy cave and needs opening out onto the garden as does the whole of the back of the house pretty much. Q18: What activities you enjoy doing outside, from family BBQs to summer picnics and sports as well as the things the boys enjoy doing; be it exploring or even looking for some along time. A18: All the above Q19: Where do you spend most of your time when you re home and what are the favourite things you like doing? A19: Living room playing with boys and their many toys Q20: What are the biggest issues you face when you re navigating the home with the boys? A20: Making sure they don t try and go upstairs Q21: What are the biggest issues Theo and Oskar face when they navigate the home? A21: The stairs, as they ll likely fall down them if they re not helped Q22: Do you sometimes work from home? A22: Occasionally Q23: When do you wake up? A23: 5.30 am 2
Q24: Who uses the bathroom first? A24: Nick Q25: Do you do yoga in the garden? A25: Yes Q26: Who makes dinner? A26: Klara Q27: Is there anything else important to you about your home or anything else which irritates you and you re keen to see changed? A27: Bring in as much light as possible and fully open it up to the back garden Q28: What do the kids wish for in particular? What should the new house provide besides the adaptation to their needs and the necessary practicalities? A slide? Something crazy? A28: As long as it s flat, on one level (save the upstairs) and open plan, has a wet room (getting in and out of the bath is starting to get tricky for Theo) and offers either the sky or the garden at every turn, the boys will be happy Q29: What do the parents wish for in particular? What should the new house provide besides the necessary practicalities? Q29: As above QUESTIONS FOR THEO AND OSKAR Q30: What are your favourite colours? A30: Blue and green Q31: What is your favourite fruit and what s your least favourite? A31: Strawberry Q32: Do you like playing with toys, or playing games together? A32: Both Q33: Your parents mentioned you love spending time in the garden, what do you like to do outside? A33: Build things in the garden: camps, tents. Play in the green house. Plan things. Look for bugs. Q34: What do you like doing at the weekend and do you have any hobbies? A34: As above Q35: What s the most exciting thing you ve ever done? A35: Quite possibly Legoland in Billund, Denmark Q36: What do you like most about your house? A36: The garden 3
Q37: Where s your favourite place to explore? A37: The garden Q38: What time of the day do you least like? A38: First thing Q39: What s your least favourite part about your room? A39: We don t have our own rooms yet Q40: What would you like to change most about your house? A40: Brighter and less claustrophobic GENERAL QUESTIONS Q41: Do you anticipate having a design proposal in the expression of interest? A41: No, you are asked to address the key issues in the brief and explain your interest in the project and the particular skills you could bring to it. This should be on a maximum of 4 sides of A4 paper (or the equivalent) and can be expressed in whatever format you wish written; drawn; photographic etc. Q42: Is it possible to receive further photos of the house and garden? A42: You should assume that no further photos will be available, if we can find more then they will be posted on the website. Q43: What qualities are the Taussig s looking for in an architect? A43: An architect who really gets disabled living and what it takes to create the right space Q44: Is there a specific time requirement for the house to be completed? A44: No Q45: How long will the construction phase take? A45: Depends on the design and the builder Q46: The wonderful garden comes across as a key part of the Taussig family's home. Is the competition's scope and budget limited to the building or can the design team include landscaping and the garden within the design response? A46: We want to build a path around the perimeter of the garden which is wheelchair friendly, meaning Theo and Oskar can always access it. Already looked into this, with materials and labour coming to sub 5k Q47: We expect ground conditions to be normal. Is this correct? A47: As far as it is known, yes. Q48: We understand that the garage can be demolished to optimise the design. Which material is the existing garage? A48: Concrete, and in view of period, expect asbestos. 4
Q49: What is the foundation of the garage? A49: Not known Q50: Should a new space for cars / bikes be provided somewhere else on the grounds? A50: No, we can simply park in the front driveway, which is a semi circle in and out drive Q51: Should a new car space be part of the construction costs of ? A51: No Q52: Should landscaping be part of the construction costs of ? A52: No Q53: Can trees or shrubbery be cut back or removed? A53: Lots of tree preservation orders in place because of where we are but we ve already got rid of most of the tree right by the garage. The rest can stay Q54: The photos show that the existing house sits on a base. To allow for a barrier free brief, what is the difference in height to the external ground level? A54: About two feet. Q55: The photos of the house don t show any change in level from front to back. Is this correct? A55: Yes, difference in level is from left to right only, with left side of house as you face it from front about a foot and a half higher than right, hence the base Q56: Should refurbishment works of the existing be accounted for and be part of the construction costs of , i.e. rewiring, replumbing, adding insulation? A56: Yes, the budget s tight, though we will be able to pull in some help and favours, including replumbing and rewiring. Q57: Will the interviewees be media trained before being filmed? A57: God no, this is not the X-Factor, thank God Q58: Does the design of the actual house come after the submission and interview, once the team has been chosen? So, in Effect it is a competition to be the chosen designer? A58: Please see the answer to Q41. The team selected from the competition process will work with the client to develop a design for the house. The competition does not seek design solutions. Q59: What is the sqft of existing Box Hill house? A59: DOWNSTAIRS: Bedroom/reception room 4.17m x 7.85m Living room 4.17m x 4.17m Kitchen/breakfast 4.17m x 3.66m Bathroom: 2.18m x 2.16m Q60: There s mention of a garage being demolished. Is this to make space for an extension? A60: Yes, to build the two bedrooms and wetroom for Theo and Oskar 5
Q61: Is the new house in the Green Belt or an AONB? A61: From the council: The property is in the green belt but also in the smaller rural village. Basically this means that the 50% extension rule in the green belt that I spoke to you about does not apply as the property is located in the smaller rural village. I suggest that you put in a Householder application for the new extension. Please see the links below with the information required to submit an application. Q62: Can you share the address of the property? A62: Competitors are requested not to visit the site, or to make contact with the local council or other stakeholders. Q63: What is the picture of at the end, the yellow single story house? A63: This is the back of the house Q64: Could you provide a pack of information to enable me to do this comprehensively please? We would need the existing drawings and photographs of the house at the highest resolution. Is this possible? A64: Please see the answer to Q41. The competition does not seek design solutions. The team selected from the competition process will work with the client to develop a design for the house. The Estate Agents leaflet is available as a PDF on the website. Q65: Can you provide me with large scale images of the plans? It is difficult to read them as they are. A65: Please see the answer to Q64. Q66: Do you have images of the interior spaces? A66: See the answer to Q42. Q67: Do you have any more base files/mapping/photos for the site? A67: See the answer to Q42. Q68: We re assuming the floorplan shown is that of the existing Box Hill house? Can we get a larger version of this, ideally showing the site more clearly? A68: See the answer to Q42. 6
