1 Windows XP (SP2) preferred setup pre Axess install. November 2006 The following are instructions for Computer setup using Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 Operating System before Axess is loaded. If you are starting with a new disk, you need to insert your Windows CD to CD drive. Then cold boot (remove mains power and wait 10 seconds then re-apply). The Computer should boot to the CD. If it does not you will need to go to BIOS and set boot priority to have CD Drive as first boot device. Windows CD will start. Create only one partition on your disk. If there are multiple partitions, delete them to have one partition. Do a NTFS Format of the partition. (Not the quick one) Once formatting and loading of some files is finished, it may reboot. Now it will go to setup of the operating system. You will need to type in the Name and Organization. Have your Windows XP Product License Key ready. You will need to enter a Computer Name. Make note of the Administrators Password you enter. 1

2 Once Windows is installed, you will have the standard desktop on screen. Before removing the CD, Right Click Start. Select Explore, navigate to CD Drive and right click on folder "I386". Click Copy. Now navigate to C:\ Right click in right hand pane and click paste. 2

3 The folder with files will be copied to the root of "C Drive". When finished, it will look like, Remove CD from Drive. Close Windows Explorer from desktop. 3

4 Left click Start. Right click top blue area for properties. Go to Taskbar tab. Un-tick Hide Inactive Icons & "Show Quick Launch". Click Apply & OK. Right click on desktop area, select properties. In Display Properties do the following: Themes Tab, Select Windows Classic. Click Apply. Do not click Ok. 4

5 Click to Desktop Tab, Select no background. Click Apply. Do Not click OK. Click to Screen Saver Tab, Un-tick "On Resume, password Protect" and select "None" for screen saver. Click Apply. Don't click OK yet. 5

6 Click on the power button (lower right). A Power Options Properties opens, At the Power Schemes Tab, select "Always On" power Scheme, turn of monitor after 1 hour (except in NOC/MCR environments!) and Never turn off hard disks. Click Apply and OK (only Power Options Properties box closes.) Go to Settings Tab, 6

7 Select screen resolution 1280 by 1024 if possible, otherwise you should be able to select 1024x768. Check that "Highest 32 Bit" is selected in color quality field. Click Apply & OK. (Display Properties box closes.) 7

8 Left click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. Right click on "Application" icon at left hand side tree, Click properties. Check that "Overwrite events as needed" is selected. Do the same for Security and System. Then close Event Viewer. 8

9 Go to Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Select the following, Click Apply. Click OK. Go to Start, Control Panel, Date & Time. At Date & Time Tab, set your year, month, day and time. Click Apply At Time Zone Tab, select correct Time Zone and Tick to auto adjust for DLS. Click Apply. Do not click OK yet. 9

10 At Internet Time Tab. Un-tick Automatically Synchronize. (Unless you have your own NTP server.) Click Apply. Click OK. 10

11 Left Click, Start, Control Panel, Internet Options. At General Tab, Home Page area, click "Use Blank" button. Click Apply. Click OK to close the "Internet Properties" box. Left Click, Start, Control Panel, System. You may want to put in a computer description. At Hardware Tab, Click on Device Manager button. 11

12 Make a list of missing drivers that you may want. Click X top right corner to close Device Manager. At Advanced Tab. Click Performance Settings button. At Visual Effects Tab, Select "Adjust for best performance" Click Apply. Do not click OK. 12

13 At the Advanced Tab (within Performance Options ), Select Programs to have best performance. Click Apply and OK Right Click Start, select Explore. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator. Menu 'View' click 'Details'. Click Menu "Tools", select "Folder Options". 13

14 You will see, Select 'Windows Classic Folders', click Apply. Do not click OK yet. Click View Tab, Select exactly the items selected in above screen shot, then click Apply. 14

15 Now click on button, "Apply to All Folders", (middle top), Click yes to the confirmation box. Click OK to close Folder Options. Close Windows Explorer. Left click, Start, Control Panel, "Add or Remove Programs". Click at left on "Add/Remove Windows Components", wait for it to load. 15

16 It will display, Tick and high light Internet Information Services (IIS), click Details button, Tick; Common Files, FTP Service, IIS Manager and World Wide Web Service (At bottom). Click OK Back at the Windows Component Wizard box, Scroll down to Message Queuing. Tick and high light. Click Details button. 16

17 You will see, Un-tick Active directory Integration. Click Ok. Click Next at 'Windows Components Wizard'. Wait 17

18 Components will want to install, Click OK Click browse and navigate to C:\I386, Click OK. You will have to do this twice. Then click Finish. 18

19 You have just finished configuring and loading IIS & Message Queuing. Close out of "Add Remove Programs" box Load your computer specific drivers. Example: NIC, video, comms, etc. Do a computer restart. 19

20 Plug in a CAT5 LAN cable, go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connection. Click on Properties button bottom left. Left click once on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" Tick "Show Icon in notification area when connected" & "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity". 20

21 Click Properties (middle right). You will see, Insert the static IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, Preferred DNS server, Alternate DNS server, given to you by your IT adviser. This is important information and must be correct. Click OK. Close other open LAN boxes. Now you should be on a LAN/WAN. It is shown by this icon in the system tray. Bottom right of screen near clock. (Icon has a red cross through it if not connected.) 21

22 With WEB connectivity, go to Start, Internet Explorer, Click Tools Menu and select 'Windows Update'. There may be an Internet explorer security warning box come up. Accept it and move on. Continued over., 22

23 Click on Express to get High Priority updates. Once down loaded, click on 'Install Updates'. Accept agreement. Down loading will start. The Updates will Download and install. When complete you will see, Click Close. Close Internet Explorer. Depending on what updates there are, you may be asked to Reboot the computer. You are finished setting up the computer operating system. 23

24 At most sites, particularly rarely visited remote sites, it is advantageous that when the computer has a loss of power, or a restart has been sent, you want Windows to automatically log on. There are a few ways to achieve this. We use a small applet called TweakUI. You can get it from our FTP site, ftp.statmon.com\public\downloads\utils\misc TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe This is not necessary for the functioning of Axess. Download it and follow these instructions. Double click on, "TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe". You will get, Click next. Accept license. Click next. It will install. Then come up with the finish screen. Click Finish. Tweak UI has installed now you need to set it up. Click Start, All Programs, Power Toys For Windows XP, Click on Tweak UI. 24

25 You will see, Click on Logon and expand the tree, Click on Autologon. Check that Administrator is in User Name field and there is a tick to auto logon. As above. Click on Set Password button. You will see, Type in the Administrator s Password. Confirm it and click OK. Click Apply at the TweakUI box and that s now finished. 25

26 VNC (or TightVNC) is another useful application that often is of benefit when Axess machines are on a LAN/WAN. It is similar to PCAnywhere. You can get it from our FTP site, ftp.statmon.com\public\downloads\utils\vnc vnc-4_1_2-x86_win32.exe (or "tightvnc setup.exe"). This is not necessary for the functioning of Axess. Download it and follow these instructions. Double click on "vnc-4_1_2-x86_win32.exe". It will come up with, Click next. Accept the agreement and click Next. 26

27 You will get, Click next. Click next, you will get, 27

28 Tick to not create a start menu folder, then click next. Take the defaults as above and click next. Click Install. It will install and come up with, 28

29 Select, "VNC Password Authentication", then click "configure" button. Type in the password you want to use. Confirm Password, then click OK. Click Apply and OK. Setup will continue, click next at the next screen! Then click Finish at the last screen. VNC Server will have appeared in the system tray, 29

30 Now go to, ftp.statmon.com\public\downloads\utils\misc and see winzip100.exe (or "wrar362.exe"). This is not necessary for the functioning of Axess. But always useful to have. Download it and follow these instructions for "winzip100". Double click on "winzip100.exe". You will get, Click on Setup. It will load and come up with, Click OK. More files will load, you will get, Click next. Click yes to accept license agreement. 30

31 Click next at this next screen, Select "Start with WinZip Classic" at the next screen (not shown here) and click Next. Select "Express setup" at following screen (not shown here) and click next. At the next screen you will see, Click next. At the following screen click Finish. It will come up with, Close this WinZip box. That s finished. 31

32 You may want to install Adobe Reader to be able to view documents. This is not necessary for the functioning of Axess. Now refer to Document, Axess CD Install Guide.pdf. Restart the computer, see that the auto-log-on has worked and it should come up to the desk top with out intervention. (You may want to also check that the computer BIOS is set up to reboot and restart the computer and operating system from a return of mains energy.) 32
