What is Grace? An Introduction to Grace Review Jesus came to do what we could not to give us what we did not deserve Much of the modern church preaches a message that does not line up with the gospel we find in our Bible. Many are preaching either a legalistic, rule based religion, or a false grace message that gives us assurance of salvation without true repentance or obedience [no fruit]. Legalism or lawlessness prevails in our pulpits. The good news of the gospel is that we have received both mercy and grace from God in our weakness and sinfulness upon repentance and faith in Him. [Mercy: not receiving what we deserve [judgment] Grace: receiving what we do not deserve [forgiveness, power of the Holy Spirit, access to God] Grace is not simply a good virtue that someone possesses, but the very thing that has brought us into salvation and ushers us into the presence of God. We have now been given access to God through grace, we are empowered to walk in holiness by grace, we have favor before God by His grace it has much depth.
What is grace? A. There is broad and general application of grace as well as a narrow and specific one. a. The broad application focuses on God s goodness, forgiveness, kindness and power. b. The narrow application focuses on God s enabling power in our inner man and our outward ministry B. The Christian life is cooperation with the grace of God and His Holy Spirit. God will not do our part and we cannot do His part. If we do not do our part, God will withhold some blessings that He desires to give us and that He died to give us. We cannot earn His grace; we can simply position our hearts/lives to receive it C. We are saved by grace and called to live our Christian life out by grace [Gal 3:2-3] a. Our part: making quality decisions to deny ourselves [say no to sin], to feed our spirit on the Word, to ask for God s help [prayer and fasting], to embrace godly activities [serving] and relationships [fellowship] b. God s part: to release supernatural influences on our heart [power, wisdom, desire], body [healing], circumstances [provision, protection, direction] and relationships [favor]
D. Many pervert the grace message by reducing it to receiving forgiveness without true repentance. This is the error of the seeker sensitive model of church. There is no forgiveness of sins without true repentance. [Esau, Saul, Cain] E. We are called to live in grace and not by works. To earn God s favor in a good week would require that we are 100% good. Jesus said, "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48). James said, Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it" (Jas. 2:10). The best week is will still not good enough to earn God s favor. Our best acts of obedience are tainted with our imperfect love and impure motives and unprecedented pride. Our only hope is the grace of God and faith in Christ Romans 3:21-26: We have been justified freely by His grace We are saved by faith through the grace of God, and receive mercy in our weakness empowered by His Spirit. A. Saved by faith: means that salvation comes when we acknowledge our own spiritual bankruptcy, seeing we cannot be saved by our works or strength and through the revelation of the Holy Spirit place our faith in the atoning work of Jesus Christ on our behalf. He died for our sins and to deliver us from our sinful nature and separation from God and restore us into relationship with God, spiritual freedom, healing and wholeness.
B. Through grace: means that we received something we do not deserve and cannot earn. It is freely given and can only be received by faith [not works] We are brought into salvation through grace and walk out salvation through grace. C. Receive mercy: because we are now in right relationship with God, we are positioned to receive mercy in our times of weakness instead of judgment. God deals with us tenderly and in love. The call of grace: the gospel message A. True grace calls us into a life of denying the lusts of our flesh and imparts power to walk godly [in righteousness] 11 For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. 14 He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds. Titus 2:11-14
B. Much of the grace teaching in the body of Christ is not true grace teaching. It is distorted as it empowers compromise and passivity as it gives us confidence that God is smiling at us. This false teaching on grace fills the airwaves and the best-selling books and many mega ministries. C. Many grew up with distorted teaching on grace, thus they naturally resist the truth about grace. D. The grace of God sometimes requires us to tear our heart. The Western Church has little understanding of this. Some are confused when they say that a certain teaching lacks grace because it does not allow them to have confidence of God s pleasure over them until they repent. 12 Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." 13 So rend (tear) your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God. Joel 2:12-13 E. Jesus, who was full of grace and truth, made a demand upon those who follow Him to deny self, take up their cross and relinquish the leadership of their lives to Him. This was the grace message of Jesus. F. Jesus also placed higher demands upon those under grace then those under the law. [Sermon on the Mount] He also called people to strive to enter the narrow gate [Matt 7:13-14, Luke 13:23-24] Grace empowers us to live in victory over sin
Romans 5:17-21 A. Paul made a declaration that where sin abounds, grace abounds more (Rom. 5:20-21). He applied this declaration by saying that in the same way that sin reigned in our lives before our salvation, even now grace reigns in us. In other words, as the dominion of sin brought damage and loss to us, so now the dominion of grace brings restoration and blessing, in a greater measure. 20 Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life (Rom. 5:20-21) B. The reign of sin: We were under condemnation (judgment) before God. We were powerless before sin (at the heart level), in sickness, fear, and lack and without the ability to challenge Satan s attack against us. We were under darkness without the ability to understand the Word, or to receive divine direction for our life. We were destitute without hope of a good future in God. C. The reign of grace: It includes forgiveness, new power, new desires, and new insights. We have new abilities to resist sin and Satan. Do not ask God for these thank Him for them.
