2 Hardware Connections 1. The Required Connection section above shows the connections that are required to make the scale operate: The power cord will connect to the port labeled DC Power. The data communication cord will connect to the port labeled Scanner I/F. 2. The Optional Connection section above shows the options that are available with CRE/RPE: The scale pole display will connect to the Remote Scale Display port. 3. The data cable for the scale (pictured left) is required to connect the scale to the computer. 2 P a g e

3 4. Connect the end (pictured left) to the underside of the scanner/scale in the port marked Scanner I/F. 5. Plug the other end of the serial data cable into the available serial port labeled COM1 on your computer. Note: This device will only work while connected to COM1 of your computer. 6. Connect the standard power cable to the power supply. 3 P a g e

4 7. Connect the other end to a power wall outlet. 8. Connect the cable end (pictured left) from the power supply into the port marked DC Power on the scanner/scale. 9. If you have the optional pole display for the scale plug the end (pictured left) into the Remote Scale Display port. 10. When finished connecting the cables to your scanner/scale place the device back to the normal operating position. 4 P a g e

5 Magellan Programming Scan the following barcodes in order to program the device. After making any of the following changes to the scale you will need to contact Weights and Measures to make sure the scale are certified and weighing items properly. of the scanner/scale will start flashing This will make the scale enter the programming mode. correctly. This barcode will set the ETX to a value of 3. ***Only Scan this barcode if you DO NOT have the optional Remote Display connected to the Scale (if the optional Remote Display IS connected then skip this barcode).*** Note: By default the remote display is enabled. When this barcode is scanned the scanner will reboot and the green lights on the top of the scanner/scale will stop flashing This will make the scale exit the programming mode. 7 P a g e

8 Testing Communication through Windows In Windows XP: 1. Select Start. 2. Select Run and type in cmd. This will open the command prompt. In Windows 7: 1. Select Start. 2. Type in cmd. Then select cmd.exe, this will open the command prompt. 3. At the command prompt type in: mode com1 then hit Enter. 4. You should get a message that gives information (pictured above) that shows the device is communicating with the computer. Note: If at the command prompt nothing is shown when typing mode com1 then there are two options: 1. We can try using a third party HyperTerminal application to test the communication of the device (Please see the web). 2. We can try reinstalling the COM port on your computer (Please see below). 8 P a g e

9 To reinstall the COM port on your computer please do the following: Select Start. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Select the Device Manager on the left. Open the Ports (COM & LPT) hive. Right-click the Communications Port (COM1) then select Uninstall. Select OK. 9 P a g e

10 Right-click your computer name on the top and select Scan for hardware changes. The COM port should then be installed automatically. Right-click the newly installed COM port and then select Properties. 10 P a g e

11 Select the Port Settings tab and then select the Advanced button. Use the dropdown next to COM Port Number to select COM1. Select OK. 11 P a g e

12 We will then want to set the settings that the scale is configured for: Bits per second: = 9600 Data bits: = 7 Parity: = Odd Stop bits: = 1 Flow control: = None When finished select OK. The COM port should then be installed. After installing the COM port try running the mode com1 command as described on page 10 of this document. 12 P a g e

13 CRE Configuration 1. Select Setup and then Setup Screen. 2. Select the Hardware tab then select Page 1, under Weight Scale Primary: 3. Select COM1 (this is the port that the scanner/scale is connected to). Many systems have labels on the ports that contain this information. Enter the optional tare amount. Leave at 0 if you do not want to use a tare. 4. Select Magellan SL Single Cable for Primary Scale Type. 13 P a g e

14 5. Select Page Select the radio button next to 30x.01 lb under Scale Weight Formatting. 7. Select Scale. 8. Activate the scale feature and select Done. 9. Select Update. You should now be able to scan barcodes and weigh items into CRE. Note that other programs will not be able to accept input from the scanner/scale without having been designed to do so. 14 P a g e

15 CRE Configuration: Inventory Configuration 1. Select Administrative and then Inventory Maintenance. 2. Select Add. 3. Select Standard Item. 15 P a g e

16 4. The required information for the item is on the top one-third of the screen: The Department this item will be inside of (ex: SWEATERS). A unique Item Number (ex: Sweater01, or the barcode of the item). A Description, which will print on the receipts (ex: short sleeve v-neck). Your Cost, which is the price you pay. The Price you charge the customer. An optional # In Stock value if you track stock levels. Various tax options if you charge tax for this item. If you would like the item to automatically be weighed when the Item Number is entered on the invoice screen, select the option Auto-Weigh. Enter the optional tare amount. 5. Select the Additional Info tab. 6. Under Scale Item Type select the method in which the item will be sold: 16 P a g e

19 Open the CRE application then select the Manager/Options button. 1. Select Setup and then Setup Screen. 2. Select the Hardware tab then select Page 1, under Weight Scale Primary: 3. Select COM1 (this is the port that the scanner/scale is connected to). Many systems have labels on the ports that contain this information. Enter the optional tare amount. 4. 27 Usage Guide After logging into CRE you can place the item on the scale select the W button. Select the tare amount you would like to be included with this item (if any). The weight of the item will then be entered into the Quantity box. Scan the barcode of the item. 27 P a g e

28 The item will then be added to the invoice. The price of the item will be calculated based on the weight that was calculated and the price of the item entered in inventory maintenance. If the option Auto-Weigh was enabled in Inventory Maintenance then you can place the item on the scale and then scan the barcode for it without pressing the W button. 28 P a g e
