2 Entitlement of the bursary The bursary award is dependent on the subject in which a trainee wishes to teach and the outcome of their most relevant qualification, not the subject of their academic qualification. For example, a trainee with a first-class degree in Geography will be eligible for the top tier of bursary if they are undertaking ITT Physics. Who is eligible for the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Bursary? To be eligible for a training bursary an ITT trainee must, from the first day of training, meet and continue to meet the following eligibility criteria: be an eligible student for the provision of UK student support must be training in an eligible ITT subject hold a UK first degree with at least second-class honours or equivalent or training in maths or physics, with a relevant degree and have at least a grade B A level in maths, further maths or physics not already hold QTS, be eligible to receive QTS or have previously failed a training programme leading to QTS. not be undertaking paid teaching work when receiving the bursary be taking a qualifying postgraduate ITT course not taking any other ITT course comply with the terms and conditions of the bursary scheme. Trainees will be expected to seek a teaching post in England upon completion of the ITT course to be eligible for the ITT Bursary. Who is not eligible for the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Bursary? overseas trainees will not be eligible for the training bursary trainees on the salaried route to the PGCE will not be eligible for the training bursary trainees who have been recommended or in receipt of ITT Scholarship will not be eligible for the standard bursary. This applies to Physics, Maths, Computing, Chemistry. To continue to qualify the trainee must comply with the terms and conditions of the bursary scheme to inform the ITT provider of any information the provider requires to determine or re-determine whether or not the ITT trainee is eligible to inform the ITT provider about any changes to bank or address details and to repay promptly any overpayment of bursary received should they withdraw from In addition ITT providers must: determine whether a trainee is eligible to receive a bursary and whether they continue to receive the bursary. Being ineligible for a bursary does not make a trainee ineligible for an ITT place. inform trainees in writing that they are eligible. Trainees do not become eligible for a bursary until the date the provider has made that determination. Providers will inform trainees of their decision and determine the amount of bursary payable upon verification of their qualifications. Providers will ensure that trainees are informed of whether they are eligible for the bursary in good time before the start of their ITT course. determine the number, amounts and timing of bursary payments and the method by which the bursary payment will be paid.

3 How much is the ITT Bursary and when will it be paid? Trainees will be paid in ten monthly instalments on the fifth working day of each month, commencing October 2015 after their qualifications have been verified and enrolment has been completed. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Modern Language and Physics with Maths. trainees with a first class degree will receive a bursary of trainees with a 2:1 in Physics, Mathematics, Computing will receive a bursary of trainees with a 2:1 in Chemistry and Modern Language will receive a bursary of trainees with a 2:2 in Physics, Mathematics, Computing will receive a bursary of trainees with a 2:2 in Chemistry and Modern Language will receive a bursary of 12,000. Trainees who are in receipt of a Scholarship for Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Chemistry will receive a bursary of. bursaries will be paid by ten equal monthly instalments of 2,000 from October 2014 to July 2015, with two additional enhanced payments of 2,500 paid in February and July 2015 or the final month in which a trainee completes bursaries will be paid by ten equal monthly instalments of 1,400 from October 2014 to July 2015, with two additional enhanced payments of 3,000 paid in February and July 2015 or the final month in which a trainee completes bursaries will be paid by ten equal monthly instalments of 1,200 from October 2014 to July 2015, with two additional enhanced payments of 1,500 paid in February and July 2015 or the final month in which a trainee completes Trainees will have to satisfy two conditions in order to receive the two enhanced payments which are: 1. the trainee is present on the programme on the 1st January that the trainee completes the ITT programme. 12,000 bursaries will be paid by ten equal monthly instalments of 1,200 from October 2014 to July Design and Technology, English, History, Biology, Geography, Music and Primary trainees with a first class degree will receive a bursary of 9,000 trainees with a 2:1 classification will receive a bursary of 4,000. 9,000 and 4,000 bursaries will be paid by ten equal monthly instalments of either 900 or 400 from October 2014 to July Payments will be made by the Bankers Automatic Credit System (BACS) directly into trainees UK bank accounts. Bank accounts must be capable of receiving direct credits and must be in the name of the trainee undertaking the ITT programme. Payments will not be made to third parties. E.U. students will need to set up a UK bank account before payments can commence.

4 Teacher Training Bursaries The table below summarises the standard training bursaries available for 2014/15. Bursary Tier Training Bursary 2014/15 Physics Maths Computing Chemistry Languages Other Priority Secondary** & Primary Scholarships First 9, :1 4, :2 12,000 12,000 4 Other 1 9,000 ** Other priority secondary subjects include English, history, biology, geography, music and design and technology. 4 Other 1 Trainee teachers in maths and physics with a relevant degree and at least a B at A level in maths, further maths, or physics will be eligible for a bursary of 9,000. Trainees will not be entitled to this bursary if they are also entitled to a higher bursary based on degree class. The level of bursary that trainees are entitled to will depend on their highest relevant academic qualification that aligns with the bursary tier. This combined with the subject trainees are training to teach, will determine the level of bursary award that trainees are eligible for. Trainees who hold a PhD attract the same bursary tier as trainees with first-class degrees; trainees who hold a Masters attract the same bursary tier as trainees with a 2:1. However, there are some restrictions. The bursary is subject to authenticated proof of qualifications. Schools Direct Unsalaried Trainees Trainees who spend 60 days training in a school/s where more than 35% of pupils are eligible for free school meals will be entitled to a 25% uplift to their existing bursary award or scholarship. Bursary instalments will be amended to reflect the additional uplift in bursary payment once the placement has been confirmed. Bursaries are not taxed or subject to National Insurance contributions; however, it may be treated as capital income for the purposes of assessing income for trainees in receipt of welfare benefits. Trainees are advised to contact their local benefits office to check whether the bursary could affect their welfare benefits.

5 Teacher Training Bursaries What should I do if I leave the ITT programme? Trainees who leave their ITT programme of study for any reason will not need to repay any of the ITT bursary received up to the point of withdrawal. Any payment made to trainees after they have left the programme will be reclaimed. Trainees are expected to repay promptly any overpayment received. Trainees in receipt of an enhancement payment (applies to, and bursaries) who withdraw after the 1st January 2015 will not receive their enhanced bursary payment in February At the point of withdrawal, it is essential that you notify the Student Money Advice & Rights Team (SMART) at: smart@uel.ac.uk or on Completed bursary forms should be returned to Carole Law at Student Money Advice & Rights Team (SMART), University of East London, Docklands Campus, 4-6 University Way, London, E16 2RD. Trainees should ensure that they have signed the declaration on the bursary form stating that they have read and understood the guidance notes.
