1 JOB DESCRIPTION Position: Registered Weekend Radiologic Technologist POSITION TITLE: Registered Radiologic Weekend Technologist APPROVED BY: Medical Imaging Services Manager LATEST REVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: 09/16 FORMER REVISION: 2/16 DEPARTMENT: Medical Imaging Services IHA JOB CODE: 58 LATEST REVISION OF JOB DESCRIPTION: 09/16 EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt Non-exempt X Job Summary: This job description covers the most significant duties performed, but does not exclude other occasional work assignments not mentioned. The objective of the Medical Imaging Services Department is to: Provide critical imaging services of the highest quality consistent with the facilities, equipment and personnel available; obtain reliable high quality images to aid the physicians, health practitioners and staff in obtaining a proper diagnosis and treatment regimen for all customers of Davis County Hospital. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Training: 18 years of age. Employee must have a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. Must be a graduate and have a certificate from a school or course of study in Radiologic Technology approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education. Licensures/ Certifications: Possess or obtain a current Permit to Practice from the State of Iowa. Current certification by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiography Technologist) or the ARCRT (American Registry of Clinical Radiography Technologist) in Radiography as a general radiographer, or be registry eligible. *If registry eligible, must successfully pass the Radiography examination of the ARRT within the allowable three (3) times and those three (3) times must be taken within one (1) year of the initial date of certification from the training institution. Certification exams and time frames are at the discretion of the Medical Imaging Services Manager. This position may require employee to take and pass a certification and/or registry examination in the field of CT mandated by governing agencies or re-imbursement providers. Employee will be given adequate time to prepare and take examinations. Certification exams and time frames are at the discretion of the Medical Imaging Services. Employee must remain current in CPR certification. Continuing Education: Must meet the continuing educational requirements of the State Of Iowa for each area of specialization. Must meet the requirement of the ARRT, ARCRT or other accrediting or governing agency to maintain certification levels to meet the job description and requirements
2 of the ARRT, FDA, State of Iowa or any other regulating agencies in which a certification is held. Skills and Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively, multitask, and pay attention to detail. Work under pressure, sometimes in high stressful situations. Ability to operate and/or understand how equipment works within the department. Ability to manipulate patients or body parts to image effectively for the Radiologist. Remain current with techniques and/or procedures within the Medical Imaging field. Operate computers and software programs essential to the operation of the department. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to: Medical Imaging Services Manager Supervises: N\A Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following description of job responsibility and standards is intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but is not intended to describe minor duties and other responsibilities as may be assigned. All are essential job functions according to ADA guidelines and are listed in order of importance. 1. Perform routine or special Radiological examinations ordered by a physician under the direct or indirect supervision of that physician or a radiologist by applying and manipulating techniques and equipment and/or moving or positioning patients to obtain the best possible image(s) consistent with that equipment. This includes portable, general, and fluoroscopic equipment and accessories. Meet competency requirements. 2. Perform routine or special CT scan examinations ordered by a physician under the direct or indirect supervision of that physician or a radiologist by applying and manipulating techniques and equipment and/or moving or positioning patients to obtain the best possible image(s) consistent with that equipment. This may include vascular, arthroscopic, biopsy or localization procedures. 3. Ability to understand and utilize Computed Radiography (CR), or Direct Radiography(DR) systems and understand its affects on imaging or radiographic techniques. Understand and direct images and patient files including retrieving, filing in storage and seeking or sorting specific images or radiographs and patient demographics for various needs to PACS (picture archiving and communication systems), RIS (Radiology information System) and HIS (Hospital information System) using DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) systems. 4. May be required to learn other imaging modalities as deemed necessary by Administration or Ancillary Services Manager. 5. Know the preparation and sequence of multiple examinations to aide physicians and staff scheduling procedures 6. Respond and adapt to scheduling needs including taking call or working holidays and weekends as needed. Scheduled days and times are subject to change to meet to the needs of the department, facility and community. 7. Throughout all contact with customers, staff should aim to meet their needs through professional, courteous and efficient service. Staff will: treat all customers with respect
3 and courtesy; listen to what customers have to say; personalize service to the needs and circumstances of each service user where practical; always do what they say are going to do, or update the appropriate people promptly if things change, offering an explanation for the change; responds to enquiries promptly and efficiently; consult customers about their service needs Physical Demands/Work Environment WORKING CONDITIONS: 1) Exposed to radiation emitting equipment and radiation hazards. 2) Employee is subject to inside environmental conditions more than 99% of the time. 3) Is subject to noise: air conditioning and heating system noise, printer noise, patient call system, buzzers and alarms. 4) Works in well-illuminated (fluorescent lighting) climate-controlled indoor environment. 5) May experience occasional interruptions by telephone calls from people needing information. 6) Involvement in patient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury. Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with its specification for preventing contact with the above materials. 7) Electrical and radiant energy hazards are present. 8) Strength to lift patients, move equipment, push/pull carts and wheel chairs. 9) Is occasionally subject to paint fumes and floor wax. Daily is subject to numerous cleaning chemicals. Chemical hygiene and Blood-borne pathogen guidelines are in place for employee safety. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: Frequent light and medium work with occasional heavy or very heavy work involved with patient positioning, transporting or movement, and equipment set-up. Constant = % of work day, Frequent = 34-66% of work day, Occasional = 33% or less of work day.) Constant STANDING or WALKING: The amount of time spent standing or walking varies daily, depending on number and types of treatments scheduled. May be standing or walking for more than 50% of a day. This individual may work in all areas of the hospital. Person must
4 be able to move about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time. TALK and HEAR: This individual needs to be able to communicate effectively with patients, staff, other medical service providers, etc., throughout the day. SEEING/VISUAL: The ability to see is an essential part of this job, this individual must be able to perform visual inspection involving small detail for image critique. Ability to read machine settings or make adjustments. Read physicians orders. Provide patient care and needs through visual evaluations. Frequent LIFT, TURN, CARRY, PUSH, and PULL: This individual is required to transfer and assist patients from sitting to standing, etc. The approximate force required in pounds to assist a 130-pound person from sitting to standing is a maximum of 60 pounds; a 190-pound person requires approximately 140 of maximum force. Some assists may need to be performed with the assistance of another co-worker. Pushing and pulling patients in wheelchairs may be required. The force required for pushing a 130-pound person is approximately 15 pounds and for pushing a 190-pound person, approximately 40 pounds. The equipment used in the respiratory therapy department, with bases on wheels, requires less than 10 pounds of force to move. This individual is required to lift objects from a lower to a higher position or move objects horizontally from position to position. STANDING or WALKING: The amount of time spent standing or walking varies daily, depending on number and types of treatments scheduled. May be standing or walking for more than 50% of a day. This individual may work in all areas of the hospital. Person must be able to move about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time. SITTING: The time spent sitting varies daily in this position, according to the number and types of treatments. This individual can expect to be sitting approximately 50% of a typical day. REACH, HANDLE, FINGER, FEEL: The person in this position needs to have good manual and finger dexterity. This is necessary for the proper application of computers, equipment and monitors on patients. In addition, this individual needs to be able to open and mix certain medications, handle syringes, etc. REPETITIVE MOTIONS: Substantial movements of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. Grasping and feeling along with some repetitive motions. INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 1) Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with coworkers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment. 2) Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control or planning of an activity.
5 3) Making generalizations, evaluations or decisions based on judgments or measurable criteria. 4) Dealing with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. 5) Performing under stress when confronted with an emergency, critical or unusual situation. 6) Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. 7) The ability to handle the sight of blood sometimes in massive quantities; exposed tissues, organs or bones; deformed, missing or burned body parts or limbs, abused children, adults, and geriatric patients and other similar situations.
