1 CURRICULUM FOR THE MASTER S PROGRAM IN BUSINESS EDUCATION AT WU VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS On March 25, 2015, the Senate of WU Vienna University of Economics and Business approved the following resolution by the Committee for Academic Programs of March 10, 2015 on the curriculum for the Master s Program in Business Education, in accordance with 25 (1) line 10 of the Universities Act 2002 Universitätsgesetz, UG). 1 Objectives Professional research and teaching of demanding issues in the social and economic sciences primarily business administration and well-structured teaching-learning processes characterize the Master s Program in Business Education. Business education is a field with a polyvalent structure. Students need to obtain qualifications for teaching economics and business-related subjects at vocational schools, as well as for working in various areas in business practice. By successfully completing the Master s Program in Business Education, students therefore acquire not only academic training for teaching at vocational schools: The program also offers graduates various job opportunities in business, in particular in in-company training and education, human resources development and the consulting professions. To realize these objectives, after completing the program, graduates should have the necessary skills to: - Recognize different paradigms in education, business education and related disciplines - Keep abreast of current research in education, business education and related disciplines - Design teaching and learning processes on subject-related topics (business administration, economics, information systems) - Keep abreast of current academic and scientific discourse on school and teachingrelated issues, and apply it to one's own teaching - Develop curricula for teaching in schools, vocational training and continuing education programs - Develop approaches for solving business-related issues, applying state-of-the-art research findings - Analyze the ecological, economic, social and ethical effects of individual economic actions and business decisions - Learn and apply the professionally relevant teacher training standards as formulated by the Institute for Business Education in different situations 1

2 2 Admission Requirements The prerequisite for admission to the Master's Degree Program in Business Education is the successful completion of a bachelor s degree program or a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) bachelor program or an equivalent first-degree program in a relevant discipline at a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Austria or abroad. Bachelor programs, university of applied sciences bachelor s programs, or equivalent first-degree programs in a relevant discipline are degree programs from a university or a university of applied sciences which a) consist of a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, and b) require examinations in business administration/economics worth a minimum of 70 ECTS credits for completion, at least 3 ECTS credits of which are to be in the field of information systems. (2) Dual application of examinations to the Master's Degree Program in Business Education through transfer of examinations completed in the first-degree program in a relevant discipline pursuant to (1) is not permissible. 3 Classification, Structure, Total Credit Hours and ECTS (1) The Master's Degree Program in Business Education is a degree program in social and economic sciences within the meaning of 54 (1) of the 2002 University Act. (2) The 5-semester Master's Degree Program in Business Education is made up of 150 ECTS credits and 53 credit hours. The master's thesis is worth 20 ECTS credits, obligatory teaching placements are worth 20 ECTS credits, and the subjects of the Master s Degree Program in Business Education account for the remaining 110 ECTS credits. 4 Types of Examinations The examination types indicated in this curriculum are defined in the examination regulations of Vienna University of Economics and Business. This Curriculum, together with the Exam Regulations, forms a curriculum pursuant to 25(1) item 10 of the Universities Act

From the field of business administration (see item 2) two electives each worth 4 ECTS credits and 2 weekly credit hours each are required. Electives must be courses with continuous continuous assessment of student performance (PI). From the field of business education 3

4 and education studies (see item 3) two electives each worth 8 ECTS credits and 4 weekly hours are required. Each of these electives must consist of two courses with continuous continuous assessment of student performance (PI) worth 4 ECTS credits and 2 weekly credit hours. (2) Electives from the field of business administration include: 1. External Accounting 2. Internal Accounting 3. Marketing 4. Nonprofit Management 5. Sustainable Management 6. Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship (3) Electives from the field of business teaching and education studies include: 1. Advanced Education Studies 2. Advanced Business Education 3. Didactic Aspects of Economics 4. Didactic Aspects of Information Systems 5. In-company Education 6. English as a Working Language in Business Education 7 Prerequisites for admission to specific courses and examinations (1) The successful completion of General Business Administration incl. Information Systems is a prerequisite for admission to the courses Teacher Behavior Training incl. School Orientation Phase and Teaching Business I, and "Education Studies I." (2) The successful completion of Teacher Behavior Training incl. School Orientation Phase is a prerequisite for admission to all further courses and examinations in the Master's Program in Business Education, with the exception of "Teaching Business I" and "Education Studies I." (3) The successful completion of Academic Writing and Research Methods is a prerequisite for admission to the course "Research Proposal." (4) The successful completion of at least 24 ECTS credits in the subject Business and Economics & Business Teaching is a prerequisite for admission to the courses "Teaching Business III" and "Education Studies III." (5) The successful completion of either Teaching Business III or "Education Studies III" is a prerequisite for admission to the electives in business education and education studies. (6) The successful completion of Teaching Business III is a prerequisite for admission to the "Teaching Placement." 4

5 8 Teaching Placements (1) At the end of the Master's Program, students are required to complete Teaching Placements at vocational secondary and upper secondary schools worth a total of 20 ECTS credits. Teaching placements are to be completed as part of the Teaching Placement Accompanying Course (simultaneously) as per 5. 9 Master's Thesis Each student is obliged to submit a master's thesis worth 20 ECTS credits. In their master's theses, the students have to demonstrate their ability to independently handle a topic with the help of academic research methods. The topic of the master's thesis is to be chosen from one of the subjects of the Master's Program in Business Education, and in agreement with the Program Director. The students are entitled to propose a topic themselves or to select one from a number of suggestions made by the available supervisors. Apart from that, 33 of the Bylaws of the Vienna University of Economics and Business applies. 10 Completion of the Master's Program After a student has successfully completed all required examinations, the Teaching Placement and the master's thesis, a certificate will be issued evidencing the successful completion of the Master's Program in Business Education. 11 Academic Degree Graduates of the Master's Program in Business Education will be awarded the academic degree Master of Sciences (WU), abbreviated as MSc (WU). 12 Effective Date This Curriculum shall enter into force on October 1, This Curriculum shall replace the curriculum for the Master s Program in Business Education pursuant to the resolutions of the Committee for Academic Programs dated December 12, 2006, May 24, 2007, April 3, 2010 and May 6, 2012, approved by the Senate on December 20, 2006, May 30, 2007, March 17, 2010 and June 20, Transitional provisions Degree students who, at the time of entry into force of this Curriculum, have already begun the Master's Program in Business Education at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business pursuant to the resolutions of the Committee for Academic Programs dated March 4, 2010 and June 5, 2012, approved by the Senate on March 17, 2010 and June 20, 2012, shall be entitled to complete their studies by the end of the 2018 spring semester under the provisions of the curriculum valid on September 30, If a student fails to complete the respective phase within that period, the student will be subject 5

6 to the new curriculum for the remainder of his/her studies. In addition, students are entitled to change over to the currently valid curriculum during any enrollment period. 6
