2 An equation is a "balanced statement." To solve an equation using the calculator in a graphing sense, consider a map of city streets. Two streets occupy the same space at an intersection. Y 1 Let each side of the equation be one of the streets. Street 1 The solution to the equation will be where each side Street 2 intersects with the other graphically. Y 2 Given the equation 3 x + 2 = 8 Let Y 1 be the left side of the equation Let Y 2 be the right side of the equation to enter each part of the equation Next to Y 1 = type 3x + 2 Next to Y 2 = type 8 Zoom #6 Standard for a standard graph screen In order to complete the following steps involved in solving the equation YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SEE THE POINT OF INTERSECTION ON THE GRAPH SCREEN Note: INSTRUCTIONS for what to do if you cannot see the point of intersection are on the back. *** GRAPH to view the point of intersection. 2nd TRACE for CALC Y 2 = 8 # 5 for INTERSECTION Y 1 = 3x is the solution 2 the value that balances both sides of the equation is the weight of each side of the equation ( X, Y ) 8
