Effectiveness: Our efforts result in us reaching our organisational purpose POSITION SUMMARY The Brighter Futures program is funded by NSW Family and Community Services, to provide targeted support for vulnerable families, who are expecting a child or have children up to 9 years of age and are at high risk of entering the child protection system. The BFP is a voluntary program, and aims to provide support and services to assist in the improvement of the emotional, social, health and educational developmental outcomes for families and their children. This position is part of The Benevolent Society s Brighter Futures Program (BFP) team in the South West Sydney region. Child and Family Workers within Brighter Futures deliver a range of services to vulnerable children and families through case management, home visiting, parenting programs, children and parents group work and assistance with access to quality child care. The position requires workers to support parents to promote their children s healthy development, safety and well-being and to further enhance child and family resilience and the knowledge and skill of caregivers. It further supports children and families to make connections with their local communities in order to reduce social isolation and promote family and community functionality. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Case Management Provision of case management and case co-ordination to children and their families across South West Sydney (Bankstown, Liverpool and Fairfield). Undertakes assessment of both children and families, including regular review of strengths and needs and family assessment tool. Utilisation of various other assessment and evaluation tools, as required. Can identify and respond to child at risk concerns and follow up with families, as well as reporting to Family and Community Services, where required and in line with organisation and program policies and procedures. Works in partnership with children and families and establishes and maintains rapport, as well implementing appropriate professional boundaries. Ability to work respectfully with children and families in culturally diverse communities. Makes appropriate referrals to other agencies and links families with local support networks and services, and advocates on their behalf as appropriate. Support and develop in collaboration with families, an agreed family case plan which outlines goals, strategies and time frames and conducts ongoing review and revision of the plan to ensure it remains current to family strengths and needs. Undertakes supportive counselling and other therapeutic interventions (or refers to others) as appropriate to their professional discipline and in line with identified child and family needs. Assists in placement support and review of childcare placements for children, where necessary. 2

3 Encourages and assists families to participate in other program activities. Transports clients to appointments, where appropriate. Works to increase awareness of the community and other agencies in relation to issues that arise for vulnerable children and families, especially in relation to building child and family resilience, child safety in the home, child friendly communities and child development in a service context of cultural diversity. Works co-operatively and effectively with Family and Community Services caseworkers, where necessary. Provision of Brokerage as required and when approved by Team Leader/Manager Home Visiting Provides information, support and advice to parents on the care of babies and children and can promote the development of positive parent/child relationships in their homes. Delivers formal manual based parenting programs to caregivers. Will undertakes play and recreational activities with children, including modelling positive interactions, such as following the lead of children in play, providing a secure base for children, hands on involvement, active listening and responding appropriately and effectively with children and respecting the rights of children as expressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Builds on and assists caregivers to improve living skills and routines within the family including home management, behaviour management and communication between family members. Group work Assists in the delivery of formal manual based programs as Facilitator or co-facilitator of small group sessions for parents and caregivers based on evidence based programs, as required. Assists in the delivery of high quality childrens group play sessions and family group events, as required. Assists in transporting clients to and from group programs, as required. ADDITIONAL KEY COMPETENCIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Any other task within the scope of the role / function as directed by the Team Leader or Manager Adhere to all organisational and program policies and procedures Manage and minimise potential aggressive behaviour of clients. Contribution to a Child-Safe and Child Friendly Environment & Community Ensures that children accessing centre-based activities are welcomed, treated respectfully and equitably at all times and are consulted and encouraged to participate in all program activities as they are able to and with appropriate regard to their age and development. 3

Relationship Management Develops positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders Understands and respects the needs of diverse communities particularly Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities Resolves conflict effectively Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills Ensures all program evaluation activities are undertaken and statistical information, client files, records, case notes and required program documentation is kept up to date in accordance with program guidelines, policies and procedures and as directed by Management. Constructively participates in South West Sydney team meetings, case coordination, training, in-service seminars, supervision and performance reviews, as required. Service Delivery Ensures priorities and objectives for the service are clearly communicated Demonstrates good planning and monitoring skills Ensures compliance with the full TBS Policy and Procedure Manual Exhibits a concern for excellence in service delivery Learning and Development Participation in clinical supervision with Team Leader. Participate in Group Supervision. Actively participate in developing, implementing and reviewing annual Performance Development and Review plans with Team Leader. Identify and attend relevant training and professional development opportunities as agreed or directed by Team Leader and Manager. WH&S 4

5 Cooperate with the Society in complying with work health and safety legislation, as the Society is committed to work practices that promote the highest standards of health, safety and wellbeing of all people in the workplace. These work practices are based on risk management principles that are integrated into the Society s operational and shared services arrangements. Participate in all health and safety training, and use appropriate equipment, as directed by the Manager/Team Leader. Follow Risk Management principles of hazard identification and reporting to ensure all hazards are reported to the Manager/Team Leader and/or a WHS (Work Health and Safety) representative. KEY COMPETENCIES / CRITERIA (Must be Addressed in Application) Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Equivalent Experience and demonstrated understanding in working within a Strengths based Resilience Framework. Thorough understanding of theoretical frameworks relating to child protection, child development and interventions with parental vulnerabilities Experience in working with children and families and proven ability to undertake a range of activities and assessments of both children and families, such as play activities, child development assessments, risk of harm assessments etc. Willingness and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team to ensure the program is delivered with a focus on child and family outcomes. Knowledge and/or experience working with vulnerable children and families where there are complex child and family needs including domestic violence, mental health issues, drug and alcohol use, risk of harm to children. Capacity to work utilising own initiative, take responsibility and respond to instruction with a positive and committed attitude and to employ appropriate self care strategies and professional boundaries with children, families and colleagues. Understanding and commitment to work respectfully, effectively and creatively with children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, including use of interpreters and joint work with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Aboriginal specific services where necessary. Capacity to adapt to changing work and community environments and the evolving nature of the program Excellent oral and written communication skills Current unrestricted NSW driver s licence with good driving record DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES / CRITERIA Previous training in evidence based children s and/or adults group programs Knowledge and/or experience in providing services to children with special needs and/or vulnerabilities. Knowledge of the South West Sydney (Bankstown, Liverpool and Fairfield) Local Government Area. Ability to converse in languages other than English, particularly common to the target groups. 5
