3 European Green Capital: Recognition & Responsibility The prize is awarded by the European Commission : the award highlights the role that cities play in further improving the environment - based on a technical report assessed by a panel of experts -. it is regarded as a «quality of life indicator» 2010 edition A two-tier evaluation process - 17 applicant cities, 6 finalists Barcelona, Spain Nantes, France Reykjavík, Island Malmö, Sweden Nüremberg, Germany Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain Award announcement Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2012 and Nantes in 2013
4 European Green Capital: A long-term project with the vision of shared and sound sustainability patterns, from the crisis in the late 80s to the 2030 regional development plan. A responsible city major environmental challenges ahead, important role that cities play in further improving the environment. Challenges to be met create a dialogue at various territorial levels promote the many actions taken by citizens and other stakeholders contribute to the model of the European city of tomorrow The project is driven by the Agenda 21 territorial dynamics which bonds the 24 towns of the urban community.
5 European Green Capital: The European Commission s expectations the possibilty to reproduce best practices in European cities regardless of their size and features the idea that winning cities can act as role models to reach new audiences and promote the «European Green Capital» award the cities environmental success stories, their current actions and project The jury gave particular attention to 4 out of 12 indicators biodiversity, water, transport, contribution to global climate change

9 Main directions To position Ecocity as part of the European Green Capital dynamics and as the highlight of the 2013 European programme related to sustainable cities To be a driving force in terms of proposals and offer concrete solutions to the difficulties experienced by local authorities in the implementation of public policies in the field of sustainable development To show complementarity and consistency with the networks players and their regular events

Ecocity 2013, a platform to accelerate changes worldwide in partnership with the United Nations An unmissable event for the protagonists of change in the cities elected officials who make a difference in their city or town financial institutions, a significant role in the key challenges facing cities and towns leading researchers on sustainable development in the cities project leaders with projects that are innovative and can be replicated on a large scale
