1 Volleyball Tryout Packet Dear Potential Volleyball Team Member, Thank you for expressing an interest in being a part of the Dillard Drive Middle School Volleyball Team. The following information pages and forms are very important. Playing a school sport is a demanding and rewarding experience for students. Please read everything and make sure that you and your parents have signed the required documents. All of the documents, including your physical form (completed and signed by a doctor) must be brought to the informational meeting Tuesday, August 30. Please be responsible and turn the forms in on time. Please understand that if these forms are not complete by the beginning of tryouts on Wednesday, August 30, you will not be allowed to participate. A mandatory volleyball tryout meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 30 at DDMS in Miss Stancil s classroom. Official tryouts will begin Wednesday, August 31 and will continue Thursday, September 1 and Tuesday September 6. The team roster will be posted following tryouts on Miss Stancil s website under the Volleyball tab: Our first team practice will be on Wednesday, September 7. I understand that some of you will be playing volleyball for the first time ever, and I want you to know THAT S OK! Although I am looking for skills specific to the sport, I am also looking for coachable players. This means that you are willing to learn something new, open to constructive criticism, and will work hard to accomplish all tasks given to you- including playing specific positions on the team. Being a member of the Lady Dragons Volleyball team will give you the opportunity to showcase your athletic abilities, as well as become a leader at Dillard Drive Middle School. I hold very high expectations of team members regarding behavior and academic standing, as you will be representing our school throughout the season and beyond. 3 Judging System The following system is the basis on which each applicant will be judged. Each applicant will be judged using a scoring rubric based on the listed tryout skills. Passing, Setting, Attacking, Serving Additional considerations will be placed on academic status, tryout attitude, and teacher recommendations. Volleyball Team Expectations The guidelines below outline what is expected of Volleyball team members at DDMS. Be sure you and your parents read and fully understand them Athletes must follow the Wake County Public School System eligibility rules. Any administrative disciplinary action (ISS, OSS, excessive lunch detention) may potentially hurt your position on the team. Students participating in volleyball are expected to be in school the entire day in order to participate in games or practices, except where specifically exempted by a physician. An athlete s behavior should always be exemplary, as you are a representative of DDMS. Behavior should consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship and positive school spirit. Time Commitment and Responsibilities As a potential member of the Dillard Drive Middle School Volleyball team, you are agreeing to participate in all team activities. All practices and games are mandatory. You will be expected to make it to practice on time and get picked up on time upon completion of practice. It is important to grow into a well-rounded individual, so I understand you may wish to participate in other activities and clubs. However, these activities and clubs cannot interfere with your volleyball commitments. If you think there may be a conflict, please discuss it with Coach Stancil. Time Obligations Games: One game each week, all on Wednesdays. Practices: Approximately 3-4 days per week (M, T, TH, 3:30 5pm with some Friday practices) Team Events: While the following events are not mandatory, it is expected that you will do your best to attend High School Volleyball Game: TBA Possible NC State Volleyball Game: TBA Team Celebration: TBA

4 Practice Schedule and Information The first day of practice will be on September 7 th. Coach Stancil s website will be updated with practice dates/times. Transportation to and from practice is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Consistently being picked-up late may hurt players ability to be on the team. No cell phones at practice. Phones must be turned off or on silent. Athletes must be ready at the designated practice time. All materials must be out upon the start of practice. This includes the net and volleyballs. No guests/parents are permitted at practice, unless invited by the coaches. Coaches must be informed in advance if an athlete will miss practice. Excused absences are only an excused absence from school, illness, or a death in the family. Doctor s appointments, other activities/obligations, etc. must be scheduled around our practices and games. If the coach feels that excessive absences, even for excused reasons, prevent an athlete from performing effectively with the team, the athlete may be removed from the team. Excessive disciplinary actions (ISS, OSS, etc.) may result in removal from the team. Athletes performing below the required GPA will not be allowed to dress out for practice or play in games until they display academic progress. Instead of participating in practice, you will participate in a study hall. The coach can remove a member of the team at anytime at the coach s discretion. Once the team is selected, if additional rules are decided then team members and parents will be made aware of these rules in writing. 5 Volleyball Tryout Form Please sign and return the following document with your Physical form at the interest meeting. My child, (print student name) has my permission to be a member of the volleyball team at Dillard Drive Middle School. I understand that my child must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches, athletic department, and the principle of DDMS. I understand that all forms attached must be completed by August 30 th, or my child may not be allowed to tryout. I understand that my child must attend all meeting and tryout sessions (unless excused by the coaches) or my child will not be considered for a team position. I understand that the coach will evaluate my child, and I agree to abide by the decision of the coach. I understand there may be additional costs. I understand that volleyball is an active, physical sport with risks. These risks include injuries such as muscle sprains and strains, skin abrasions from diving, broken bones, concussions, etc. The most common volleyball injuries involve the fingers, ankles, shoulders, and knees. I understand these risks and will not hold DDMS or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time. I have read and understand the tryout packet, especially regarding my responsibilities of being a role model, the time commitment required, and other obligations set forth for being eligible for tryouts and remaining on the team in good standing. I understand the physical risks of playing volleyball as stated above. If selected, I promise to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by DDMS.
