1 Laparascopic Cholecystectomy Day Surgery Surgery & Critical Care This leaflet has been designed to give you important information about your condition / procedure, and to answer some common queries that you may have.
2 What is a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy? This is surgical procedure to remove the gall bladder with or without gall stones using an instrument called a laparoscope (camera). Benefits To prevent pain or other symptoms that you may be experiencing. Risks As with any surgical operation, there is a risk of complications from the surgery and with the anaesthetic. However, the risk is small and may include the following: Deep vein thrombosis (clot in the calf of the leg) which can detach and travel to the lungs. You will be given stockings to wear to help prevent this Bleeding may occur from the wound site. If so, apply light pressure and if the bleeding persists seek advice immediately(contact information at the end of this leaflet) There is a possibility of wound infection. Please seek advice if you think the wound is infected There are some specific complications of this surgery: There is a risk of injury to a structure near to the gall bladder called bile ducts, this happens in less than 3% of cases. If it happens further surgical procedures will be required to put thing right With any laparoscopic procedure there is a small risk to injury to abdominal contents including bowels and blood vessels Discomfort following surgery is common, please ensure that you either have your own supply of painkillers at home or you request a supply from the staff to take home Shoulder tip pain is not unusual following laparoscopic surgery; this is due to the gas inserted during the procedure, which allows the surgeon a clear view of the gall bladder Alternatives Drug treatments for gallstones are available but are not always effective. How is the surgery performed? By using an instrument called a laparoscope (keyhole surgery involving four small punctures in the abdomen). If the gall bladder is inflamed and/or difficult to remove, the operation will convert to an open operation that is to say a larger surgical wound will be made. Should this occur you will be transferred to a ward in the main hospital and will be discharged from there accordingly. Before you arrive Prior to your admission you will have been advised when to stop taking diet and fluids. Please have a shower or bath before your admission. We request that you do not wear make-up, nail varnish or jewelry (except for a wedding ring). Please bring any medication that you
3 normally take (even if infrequent), a dressing gown, slippers and a book or magazine to read. Please leave valuables at home. What will happen when I come in for my surgery? Please report to the reception desk or reception area within the day surgery ward or unit. A nurse will prepare you for your operation. You will be asked to wear a theatre gown (your clothing will be placed within a locker). You will have various observations such as your blood pressure taken. Please inform the nurse if you have any medical changes or change of social circumstances. The surgeon will come to see you, mark the operation site and obtain your written consent for your operation. Depending on the hospital site that you attend you will wait for your surgery in either a mixed sex seated area or a single sex bay. When it is time for your surgery a member of the health care team will walk with you to the anaesthetic room. After the surgery Following surgery you will wake up in the recovery area of theatre. When you are fully awake you will be transferred into the recovery lounge or bay areas of the day surgery ward or unit. Light refreshments will be provided when appropriate. A dressing will cover the stiches or clips to protect the wound. You may feel some discomfort, if so the nursing staff will give you prescribed pain relief on request. When you are adequately recovered the nurse will provide you with discharge advice, answer any questions that you may wish to ask and arrange for you to go home. This is usually up to 6 hours following the operation. Following general anesthesia please arrange the following: An adult to escort you home and care for you for the first 24 hours after discharge Not to use machinery, cook or sign documents for 24hours Please remember: Not to drive for two week or as advised Time off work is usually 2-6 weeks (depending on the surgery) Heavy physical work such as lifting and or digging should be avoided for 6 weeks following surgery At Home Take pain relief as directed. Please seek advice if you experience: Nausea and vomiting Abdominal Pain not controlled by the pain killers Difficulty passing urine Difficulty with eating and drinking Keep the wound clean and dry for the first 24 hours
4 You can shower after 24 hours, replace the dressing of applicable Take light exercise when able Stiches or clips will need to be removed by your practice nurse 10 days following your surgery. Please remember to make an appointment for this An outpatient appointment will be sent to you by post to review your surgery if necessary Reference section NHS Choices tectomy Contacts If you have any problems related to your surgery please contact one of the following: If discharged from Diana, Princess of Wales Day Surgery unit, Diana Princess of Wales Tel: ( Mon Fri) Ward B2 Tel: (out of hours).
