Afternoon: after an included lunch you will enter the Vatican Museum to view the interiors of the Sistine Chapel; among the frescoes artists were Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and Botticelli. Evening: dinner in a local restaurant with a drink whilst being serenaded by classical singers. 4 Tivoli, Villa d Este and Villa Adriana Morning: you will take a short drive outside Rome to the Lazio hills and the hilltop town of Tivoli. With views over the Roman Campagna you will have a guided tour of Villa d Este, a terraced Italian Renaissance Garden and fountains listed by UNESCO. Discover the impressive fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water and music. Afternoon: after time for lunch take a stroll through Villa Adriana, considered to be among if not the best of roman villas. Created in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian, this is an exceptional complex of classical buildings combining the best elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Evening: drink and dinner in the hotel. 5 Ancient Rome Morning: a guided tour taking in the ancient sites of Rome including the Colosseum (with entrance), said to be the world s most famous monument; Roman Forum (with entrance) and Palatine Hill. Afternoon: after lunch enjoy a cruise along the Tiber River taking in the lovely sights around Ponte San Angelo, Isola Tibertina, Ponte Sisto and Ponte Risorgimeno. Evening: you will be taken to Campo dei Fiori (in the heart of the city) for a delicious à la carte evening meal with drinks included. From here a short stroll to Piazza Navona to experience the atmosphere of this magical square and (if you wish) eat some of the best ice cream in Italy.

4 6 Following the trail of Caesar Morning: today is the second part of your tour of ancient Rome. Spend the morning at the Capitol and the Senate, the lowest and smallest of the Seven Hills of Rome, now one of Rome s most important piazzas. The medieval and Renaissance palaces surrounding the piazza now house the Capitoline Museums. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Roman Forum, ancient temples, the Senate House and basilicas, once the hub of political, religious and commercial life, now classed as one of the most historical archaeological complexes in the western world. Afternoon: free afternoon to visit the Capitoline Museums, enjoy the city and some last minute shopping or relaxing in the hotel. Evening: special farewell dinner with drinks in the city, to discuss amongst new friends your experiences of this most famous of cities. 7 Return flight to the UK After breakfast return to the airport for your flight back to the UK. Tivoli Villa D Este & Villa Adriana Tivoli is a historic hill town in the Lazio region of Italy, and is one of the most popular destinations for day trips from Rome. Tivoli's two most famous tourist attractions are the magnificent gardens of the Villa d'este and the extensive ruins of Hadrian's Villa (known as the Villa Adriana). The Renaissance Villa d'este was built in the 1550s for Cardinal Ippolito d'este, the son of Lucretia Borgia. Built over a Benedictine convent, the palace was intended for entertaining and contains lavishly frescoed reception rooms. The main attraction is the breath-taking garden. Designed to impress the Cardinal's guests, the

5 Villa d'este's gardens are composed almost exclusively of water features. There are fountains of every description from the grand 'Fountain of the Dragons' and 'Hundred Fountains', to a miniature watery reproduction of Rome. The centrepiece, the gigantic Water Organ Fountain, cascades down a huge drop into quiet, shady pools. Villa Adriana appeals to those with an interest in antiques. The Emperor Hadrian conceived a countryside dwelling here that would by normal standards be considered a town. A gigantic complex with underground service passages big enough for vehicles, the Villa incorporates lakes, fountains, libraries, baths, temples and gardens. The area covered is large, and can be confusing even with the help of a map. Tiber River Cruise Boarding at Ponte Sant Angelo on the Lungotevere Tor di Nona side of the river Tiber, your 1 hour 30 minute boat cruise will take you gently down the Tiber where you will be able to appreciate Rome from an unusual point of view. During the cruise you will see: Ponte Sant'Angelo a pedestrianized bridge which spans the river from the city centre to the Castel Sant Angelo. Completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian, the bridge has five arches, three of which are Roman, it is faced with travertine marble and is the perfect place to photograph Castel Sant Angelo from. Castel Sant Angelo also known as Mausoleum of Hadrian is a large cylindrical building, originally commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, later used by popes as a fortress and castle and is now a museum. Ponte Sisto is another iconic bridge which connects the Rione of Regola to Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere. The bridge is restricted to pedestrians. The Tiber Island located on the southern bend of the Tiber is the only island on the river. It is connected with bridges to both sides and was once the seat of the ancient temple of Asclepius and later a hospital, the island is associated with medicine and healing. Tanagra Caffe Concerto Tanagra restaurant is located close to the Vatican City and on the banks of the river Tiber. The restaurant has fantastic artistic characteristics and acoustics so whilst enjoying traditional Italian cooking you will be entertained by some of the most famous opera arias by professional singers from the Rome Opera House.
