2 Energy Research Energy Institute University College Dublin School of Electrical, Electronic & Communications Engineering UCD Energy Institute The electricity grid is undergoing a period of dramatic and profound transformation with increased penetration of variable renewables requiring increased flexibility and intelligence and with increasing demand side participation. These changes require the application of more and more intelligence and the deployment of ICT-based solutions. Managing the grid requires new and advanced optimization techniques, faster and more robust computation, the processing of more data at faster speeds and the extraction of more useful information that is then used to control the grid. Ireland has unique characteristics that make it the ideal location for world-leading activity in sustainable electrical energy systems and ICT. Built on a foundation of academic achievement and a track record in delivering solutions to industry, the Electricity Research Centre (ERC) ( based in University College Dublin (UCD), has developed an international reputation as a world leader in the area of electrical energy and grid integration of renewables. The centre is continuing to grow with recent funding successes from a range of sources adding an additional 7M (approx.) to its programme. Energy is one of the four strategic research themes in the University and we expect that the ERC and other associated programmes and centres will grow significantly in the coming years. In line with our recent growth and future ambitions, applications are now invited for a full-time, permanent academic position as Professor of Intelligent Energy Systems. This role will be critical to our continued development and we are seeking candidates with an international reputation in the interface between ICT and the Electricity Grid and demonstrated track record of success in large, interdisciplinary initiatives. The role is part of a recruitment initiative which includes a further two academic opportunities which UCD is seeking to appoint as part of the University's emerging Energy Institute. The other two roles are a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering with a specific focus on the Gas Industry and Chemical Energy Management and in Consumer Behaviour and Technology Adoption in Energy.

It is the most popular destination for Irish school-leavers and actively promotes university life as a journey of academic and personal discovery through its highly innovative and flexible UCD Horizons undergraduate curriculum. UCD is Ireland s leader in postgraduate education with almost 7,000 postgraduate students, representing approximately 28% of the UCD student population, and almost 2,000 PhD students. 5 Energy Research Institute Energy The College Institute UCD Energy Institute: Capitalising on Ireland s Advantages UCD has a strong base of energy research activities and Ireland has a number of comparative advantages that support energy research and justify focus and international ambition in the field including: Energy Resource Advantage - Wind, biomass, marine Location Advantage - Modern grid, access to industry, research expertise in key disciplines Execution Advantage - Supportive policy, access to decision-makers, regulation UCD is establishing an Energy Institute designed to host a critical mass of world class energy researchers focussed on a small number of strategically important themes, highly networked with other quality research entities in Ireland and internationally and working in partnership with industry and the energy policy community. The Strategy for the Institute was the work of an Energy Advisory Board led by David O Reilly former head of Chevron. The Institute will build on the reputation of UCD as a leading destination for energy researchers in particular in UCD s Electricity Research Centre, the Earth Institute and the new Tullow Oil Centre for Petroleum Sciences. The central mission of the Institute is the development of Smart Electricity networks, building on our core strength in grid research and embedding key ICT competencies in optimization, control and intelligence to produce a whole system approach from sources to loads. This approach will enable the development of renewable technologies and investigation of their effects of on system operation and demand side management through smart devices. Importantly, these technical solutions will be informed by economic policy, financing and consumer behaviour.

6 Energy Research Institute Energy The College Institute About the School The Electricity Research Centre is located within the UCD School of Electrical, Electronic & Communications Engineering. is a highly researchintensive and successful academic unit that is also committed to achieving excellence in undergraduate and taught graduate programme delivery. Its staff of 15 full-time academic staff includes 3 IEEE Fellows and two Members of the Royal Irish Academy. It is housed in a spacious and well-equipped modern building on the UCD Belfield campus in an attractive green environment about 6 km (4 miles) South of Dublin city centre. The graduates from the school are renowned for the strength of their analytical training in the fundamentals of the discipline and many have achieved great distinction in companies in Ireland and worldwide. Professor Thomas Brazil, Head of School considers that is has a unique capability in terms of grid integration of renewable energy not just in Ireland but at a global level. Besides electrical energy research, the School also has strong research capacity and track-record extending over more than 30 years in physical layer communications (wireless/optical systems, non-linear circuits and control, and signal processing) and in biomedical engineering (neural engineering and biomedical signal processing). has an excellent record of success in securing premier research awards in particular from industry, Science Foundation Ireland, the Higher Educational Authority (HEA) and the European Union Framework programmes amongst others. 7 Energy Research The College About the ERC The Electricity Research Centre (ERC) is an industry-university research collaboration with research driven by the energy industry worldwide and a particular emphasis on the electricity sector. is based in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) with four research strands at present: Systems & Planning, Networks, Operations & Control, and an Energy Economics branch at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). is governed by a board made up of the Industry Members, which comprise a unique ecosystem of interested parties spanning international industry to the electricity industry in Ireland, and representatives from the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

8 Energy Research The College Professor Mark O Malley Mark O Malley, FIEEE, MRIA, Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCD, is director of the ERC having founded the group in The mission of the ERC is to overcome challenges related to energy provision, mainly in the electricity domain and climate change, and to build human capacity in this crucial sector. is funded by Industry Members, an SFI Strategic Research Cluster Award, HEA funding under the Programme for Research in Third- Level Institutions (PRTLI) Cycle 5 and co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and several other national, international (e.g. EU Framework) and industry programmes. has very strong collaborative links with other national and international bodies and research institutes, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Dept. of Energy, United States; and Risoe DTU National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Denmark; and Durham University, England.

9 Energy Institute The College The Electricity Research Centre (ERC) within the School of Electrical, Electronic & Communication Engineering at UCD is seeking to fill a permanent academic position as Professor of Intelligent Energy Systems. This is a senior academic appointment located at the interface between ICT and the Electricity Grid, the so-called Smart Grid. The person appointed will be located within the School of Electrical, Electronic & Communications Engineering but will be expected to take a leadership role within UCD s Energy Institute, building up and sustaining an internationally important research team in Intelligent Energy, and interacting with other disciplinary areas within the university, such as Computer Science, Mathematical Sciences etc. Applications are sought from candidates with substantive research interests in these areas. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of research achievement combining aspects of ICT (such as in optimisation, measurement, control, data processing, telecommunications) with applications within the Grid (such as phasor measurement units, advanced state estimation, markets, demand side management etc.) and will set out a convincing vision of a future research strategy in this field. The successful candidate will show evidence of a successful track record in securing research funding in relevant areas, be committed to high quality undergraduate and graduate level education and training and will have an openness to interacting with others, notably industry.
