2 Safe Kids Mission Accidental injuries are the number one killer of kids in the United States. Traffic injuries, drowning, falls, burns, poisonings and more can almost always be avoided with the right education, awareness, and planning. Safe Kids Worldwide is a network of more than 400 partners in the United States and 32 countries around the world working to protect children. Safe Kids was founded in 1988 by Children s National Health System, with support from founding sponsor Johnson and Johnson. Since its founding, Safe Kids has helped achieve a 60% decrease in the unintentional injury rate among children ages 19 years and younger. But there is still more work to do: 1 million children worldwide die of preventable injuries each year. Safe Kids is dedicated to the proposition that no family should suffer the loss of a child from an accident that is both predictable and preventable. Program Areas Safe Kids members are actively engaged in protecting children through evidence-based educational and outreach programs and partnerships with local, state, and federal lawmakers that enact change through public policy. Safe Kids programs include: Research: Safe Kids employs focus groups, parent and caregiver polls, observational studies, and database mining to gain insights into how and why injuries occur and how best to reduce serious childhood injury and death. Road Safety: Safe Kids provides information and training on safe transportation for young children, responsible pedestrian behavior, and best practices for teens learning to drive. Home Safety: Safe Kids educates parents on making homes safer for children, with a focus on preventing drownings, fires, and burns; unintentional exposure to medication and household cleaning products; and more. Sports and Play: To reduce the number of kids sidelined by sports-related injuries, Safe Kids has developed easy-to-use tools to help parents, coaches, and young athletes understand and prevent common athletic injuries. Public Policy: Safe Kids works with all its partners to engage school boards, city councils, state legislatures, Congress, and federal agencies to advocate for children worldwide. Global Projects: Safe Kids is a recognized leader in encouraging global road safety for children. Awards Safe Kids has received dozens of awards in recognition of the quality of its work across its programmatic breadth. In 2016, Safe Kids was awarded the Golden Halo Award for the impact of its corporate partnerships in supporting effective child safety programs. Safe Kids has won more than half a dozen Telly Awards, including 2 in 2014 for the Public Service Announcements Moment of Silence and Bubble Wrap. In 2011, Safe Kids received the Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award for the innovative Walk This Way educational program, and in 2008 the Peter K. O Rourke Special Achievement Award for the Buckle Up car safety program.

3 The Development Department Under the leadership of Chief Development Officer Shannon Sullivan, who joined Safe Kids after leading development programs at the National Parkinson Foundation and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure, Safe Kids is actively seeking new funding opportunities that broaden the organization s base of donors and impact. The Role of Corporate Partnerships The impact of Safe Kids corporate partnerships were recognized with a Golden Halo Award in Safe Kids partners include some of the most recognized names in corporate America, including the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, GM Foundation, FedEx, Nationwide, McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Bell Sports, Kidde, and Honeywell. In addition to its sponsors, Safe Kids secures support for specific programmatic areas from a broad array of firms in consumer products, technology, transportation, and many other industries. The longest of Safe Kids corporate partnerships have lasted more than 28 years, but Safe Kids has also forged new relationships with emerging industry leaders, such as Airbnb and Uber, as well. Opportunities for Growth Safe Kids seeks to build on its recognized success by expanding its corporate partnership program and by building an increasingly comprehensive development program that reaches beyond this traditional base of supporters. Corporate partnerships will play a key role in meeting revenue goals and building programmatic initiatives but also in fostering Safe Kids expansion into individual giving. Cause marketing agreements, an area of intended growth at Safe Kids, create opportunities to engage small sum donors, while Safe Kids corporate partners may help to build a major donor pipeline, as well. Safe Kids senior leaders President and CEO Kate Carr and Chief Operating Officer John Hart are deeply committed to the expansion of fundraising for the organization. Carr, a former fundraiser who served as President and CEO of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and as Managing Director of Malaria No More, is working in close partnership with CDO Shannon Sullivan to support the strategic expansion of the development department.

4 The Opportunity The Director of Development and Corporate Partnerships will report to and work closely with the Chief Development Officer and senior leadership of Safe Kids Worldwide to actively build a broader base of donors and to engage donors in new funding opportunities that effectively advance the organization s mission. The Director will be responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of existing corporate partners; strategically expanding opportunities for corporate giving; and taking increasing responsibility for building relationships with foundations and individuals, as well. The Director s work will build a significant prospect base while meeting a personal fundraising goal. Specific responsibilities include: Corporate Engagement Serve as the primary relationship manager for corporate prospects and donors with a history and/or capacity for 6-figure giving. Regularly evaluate and design mutually beneficial opportunities for new/increased corporate gifts. Play a key role in the pursuit and expansion of cause marketing opportunities as part of Safe Kids corporate partnership program. Coordinate with development department and program staff to craft effective formal proposals. Maintain a regular visit schedule that effectively cultivates prospects and donors. New Fundraising Initiatives Leverage the strengths of the corporate partnership program to help build the pipeline for a nascent individual giving program. Take responsibility for relationships with a select and growing group of foundations and individuals. Help develop stewardship programs effective for both corporate and major donors. Continuously propose, design, and implement a variety of new events and initiatives that increase new gifts and raise the visibility of the Safe Kids brand and mission. Continually innovate annual fundraising initiatives that support Safe Kids Worldwide, its international partners, and its affiliated coalitions. Program Design Work with the Chief Development Officer to create revenue targets for fundraising initiatives and for the overall organization. Contribute to and encourage the growth of an integrated, comprehensive development department that achieves targets for both unrestricted and programmatic funding. Foster a department culture that encourages close collaboration with other Safe Kids departments including members of research, advocacy, program, global network, and marketing teams in order to effectively steward key donor relationships. Work with appropriate staff to ensure gift requirements and donor expectations are fulfilled.

5 The Candidate The ideal Director of Development and Corporate Partnerships will have an exceptional ability to identify mutually beneficial partnerships, to effectively market those partnerships to prospects, and to deepen partner engagement and investment over time. The Director will have spent significant time doing this work in corporate fundraising and will be equally comfortable in both the corporate and non-profit worlds. At the same time, s/he will be ready to transfer excellent communication and relationship-building skills to the cultivation of a wide range of prospects and donors, including individuals and foundations, as well. The Director will demonstrate the ability to be an effective leader internally as well as an effective negotiator and partner externally. Requirements: At least 10 to 15 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with at least some experience soliciting gifts in a health-related non-profit preferred. Track record securing a wide variety of corporate donations, including major gifts, sponsorships, cause marketing agreements, and/or in-kind giving. Demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects qualified for 6-figure donations. Evidence of a comprehensive strategic perspective necessary to imaginatively align corporate donors with programmatic initiatives and to integrate corporate and individual giving opportunities. Experience planning and executing high-profile fundraising events and utilizing them as vehicles for sponsorship and high-net-worth donor engagement. Understanding of a variety of small sum fundraising vehicles that engage and mobilize individuals, including but not limited to cause marketing agreements, is desirable. Comfort cultivating high-profile executives, celebrities, and similar individuals to become vocal supporters of an organization. Strong verbal and written skills needed to effectively communicate Safe Kids mission, giving opportunities, and the impact of injury prevention programs. Poise, compassion, and integrity that earns the confidence of a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Successful record working with staff, affiliates, and volunteers to ensure an integrated and organized effort. Knowledge of Raiser s Edge, word processing, and spreadsheet software. Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Administration, or closely related field; MBA is preferred.
