2 9:00-9:45 SQA Diploma to Degree Pathways to Progression John McMorris, Eleanor Mitchell, Nipuni Munasinghe & Aushyani Samarasinghe There are various progression pathway models in the Higher Education sector at the moment. SQA would like to take the opportunity at the ICEF Partnership Forum to demonstrate Diploma to Degree articulation and the collaborative approach it has taken in the international arena to benefit HND students around the world. SQA will present the session in collaboration with both an international University articulation partner and an overseas HND delivery centre. The session will be led by SQA providing an introduction and overview of the models actively being used internationally. Both partners will then be invited to present and give an insight from each of their own perspectives before the session will then open up for a Q&A style panel, chaired by SQA. Key highlights: Themed around working in partnership Pathway Models and flexible nature of provision Summary of SQAs international activities and strategy going forward Overview of SQAs overarching relationship with both the centre and HEI with the shared goal of working together to benefit students Outline of a mutually beneficial model for all parties involved Examples of best practice Speakers John McMorris Director of Business Development, Scottish Qualifications Authority, United Kingdom John is Director of Business Development at the Scottish Qualifications Authority. He has substantial experience in governance, management and financial oversight of companies and large organisations and is a Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors. Within SQA, John leads a number of teams responsible for sales, marketing, international awarding, international articulation, business intelligence, and UK and international contracts. He has a sound working knowledge of higher education both home and abroad. In recent years, he has been heavily engaged in the international market for higher education. He is responsible for the Diploma to Degree project, which aims to increase the number of articulation routes for international SQA HND students to complete a degree at international universities. In his current role, and in his previous role as SQA s Head of International, John has created and developed effective relationships, partnerships and business opportunities with organisations, institutions, industry, governments and their agencies in many parts of the world. 3 9:00-9:45 Eleanor Mitchell International Partnership Manager, Central Queensland University, Australia Eleanor is the International Partnerships Manager at CQUniversity Australia. Her background spans international education within universities, colleges and continuing education organisations across six continents. For CQUniversity, Eleanor manages partnerships including pathways, articulations, global mobility of study abroad and exchange and recruitment for Europe and the Americas. Her experience developing and fostering relationships has ensured stakeholder success, including corporate and government involvement, amongst a range of business and educational opportunities. Nipuni Munasinghe Assistant Business Development Manager, Saegis Campus, Sri Lanka Nipuni is the Assistant Business Development Manager at Saegis Campus, Sri Lanka. She is an MSc holder and a Management graduate from Middlesex University, UK. She has experience in the Sri Lankan Higher Education sector in establishing new partnerships with many universities in the UK and Australia. In addition to her teaching for the SQA Higher National Diploma delivered in Sri Lanka, Nipuni also acts as the Programme Coordinator for Heriot-Watt University, UK degrees conducted in Sri Lanka. She adds vitality, professionalism, warmth and advocacy to her work with clients and partner universities in the UK and Australia. Aushyani Samarasinghe Assistant Manager - University Affiliations, Saegis Campus, Sri Lanka Aushyani possesses an MBA from the University of West London and a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She is also a CIMA passed finalist. Aushyani has also served as a finance professional in the shipping sector. She now works as a Lecturer in Business Management at Saegis Campus, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka. In addition to her teaching, she acts as the Assistant Manager-University Affiliations, where she supports the maintenance of strong strategic global partnerships. In this role she proactively supports Saegis aims to achieve international objectives and to stretch international ambitions. She also acts as the contact for partnership activities involving UK universities in identifying business and research opportunities. Page 3 of 6

4 9:45-10:30 International Dual Degree Programmes: Two better than One? Yue Chen International dual degree programmes are one of the fastest developing models for collaboration between two higher education institutions located in different countries. Its dual degree award nature attracts students who are seeking for an education experience in the international context. However, is two really better than one? Is the managerial complication doubled up or halved? In this session, a case study of the first UK-China dual award degree programme will be presented with experience shared on the key aspects of the programme, including challenges and lessons learned. The dual award joint programme between Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) was the first UK-China TNE programme of its kind approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in Currently, there are over 2,300 students enrolled, studying on Telecommunications Engineering with Management, e-commerce Engineering with Law and Internet of Things Engineering degree programmes. It is the first TNE programme to be accredited by the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) in mainland China and has produced over 3,500 graduates to date. Speaker Yue Chen Associate Professor and Director, QMUL-BUPT, United Kingdom Dr Yue Chen is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the QMUL-BUPT Joint Programme, a transnational education (TNE) venture which is composed of a set of dual award degree programmes, jointly run by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). She is also the Director of Joint Ventures in School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, who is responsible for fostering research and teaching collaborations between QMUL and other prestigious institutions worldwide. Dr Chen has been working in Higher Education (HE) for over twelve years and she has extensive experience on establishing and managing collaborative educational programmes with various partners. Dr Chen has been invited by many TNE, QA, and HE conferences and she has also served as member of the IET China Steering Group, the IET Qualification Board and Quality Review/Programme Validation Advisory board at several universities in the UK. 5 11:00-11:45 Due Diligence - the Framework for Collaboration Nathalie Jacoby-Danesh This session will explain why it is crucial for potential partners to carry out legal, financial and academic due diligence before formalising any legally binding arrangements regarding international collaborations/ partnerships, student exchanges, joint/dual degree programmes, validation or research agreements. At the end of this session, participants will appreciate that due diligence is not just a regulatory requirement for UK universities, but that it is an invaluable information gathering exercise and a most effective tool to minimise long term risks for all the parties involved. Due diligence often involves numerous parties and you will understand who should be involved, as of when, what questions should be asked and what to do with the findings. Participants will learn about the main do's and don'ts of international due diligence exercises to help them build, structure and manage resilient and fruitful relationships with overseas partners. The presenter will provide real life illustrations and will answer as many questions as possible from the audience. The presenter wrote on due diligence in International Partnerships - a Legal Guide for UK Universities published by Universities UK / Eversheds LLP and International Operations - a Legal Guide for UK Colleges published by the Association of Colleges / Eversheds LLP. Speaker Nathalie Jacoby-Danesh Senior Associate, Eversheds LLP., United Kingdom Nathalie is a doubly-qualified lawyer: a solicitor in England and Wales and an "Avocat à la Cour" in Luxembourg. She gained a Masters degree in law from the University of Cambridge in 2003 and a Masters degree in law from the University of Strasbourg in She now works as a senior associate at Eversheds LLP. Prior to joining Eversheds, she trained at Clifford Chance-Luxembourg ( ). Nathalie advises on a broad range of corporate and commercial law affecting education institutions from the public and the private sector and has developed special expertise in international collaborations. She has been involved in the establishment of campuses of UK universities abroad, such as the medical campus of Newcastle University in Malaysia. She also advises numerous education institutions on contractual collaboration agreements with overseas partners such as UCL and UCL Partners setting up a Framework Agreement with Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital. 6 11:45-12:30 International Dual Degrees Aurélien Krejbich Sciences Po offers international dual bachelor s degree programmes with prominent world universities. These programmes offer a carefully coordinated curriculum. Students graduate with a degree from each institution. As part of its international strategy, Sciences Po has signed dual degree conventions with several major universities throughout the world. Each year, these programmes enable students selected by both institutions to complete one or two year of studies at Sciences Po and another at the partner institution, with a degree awarded by both universities. The prestige of these degrees and the linguistic skills acquired, together with the experience of student life in two different countries, are advantages greatly prized by potential employers today, particularly European and international companies and organisations. Sciences Po is leading the way in international dual degrees, the presentation will look at the incentive behind the programme, history of the programme, how it has developed, future plans, the impact on the internationalisation and the programmes contribution to international student recruitment and reputation. Speaker Aurélien Krejbich Head of the Centre for Europe - International Affairs Division, Sciences Po Paris, France Aurélien Krejbich is Head of the Centre for Europe at the international affairs division of Sciences Po Paris. The Center for Europe is in charge of promoting Sciences Po at the European level. It covers in particular students and faculty exchanges, double-degrees and promotion activities. It coordinates a network of European educational and research partnerships. This encompasses no less than 130 partnerships with some of the most prestigious European universities, a dozen dual-masters, -bachelor and -doctorate degrees programmes, several multilateral and special programmes, and a significant international exchange programme for students and professors. Aurélien Krejbich is more particularly in charge of the cooperation with British partners such as the London School of Economics and King s College London. With more than ten years of work experience with the higher education sector, he was previously Sciences Po HR Director and has been closely associated to the development of Sciences Po. Aurélien Krejbich is a qualified lawyer, specialized in French private law. He also holds a Master in Business and Finance (Sciences Po) and and a Msc in Comparative Politics (London School of Economics). Page 6 of 6
