Darwinism and Christian Faith
Why this topic? Many people feel there is a conflict between darwinism/evolution and christianity What is facts, what is theory, what is speculations? My goal not tell you what to believe Give tools for understanding the conflict Suggestions for feeding the mind
Where do everything in nature come from? Origins Science Natural laws, chance, design

A scientific theory about everything Origins Science Natural laws, chance, design Physical Origin of the universe and the natural laws Chemical origin The beginning of life Biological origin The origin of species
A scientific theory about everything Origins Science Natural laws, chance Physical Origin of the universe and the natural laws Chemical origin abiogenesis Darwinism Reproduction Variation - mutations selection microevolution Biological origin Neodarwinian evolution DNA, Genes, alleles etc Theory of common decent macroevolution
It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I d rather not consider that) Richard Dawkins
Some of the scientific challenges of Neodarwinism Impossible to observe evolution The origin of life (Strictly not part of it) Fossils Lack of transitional forms? The cambrian explosion and other quick transitions How evolutionary innovations arise DNA as a language Some organisms have different transcription code.
A theory or a worldview? Limits of scientific metodology?
What scientific methodology can explore
Reality What scientific methodology can explore
A theory or a worldview? Limits of scientific metodology? Limits are transfered to reality
Naturalistic reality Reality lost What scientific methodology can explore
A theory or a worldview? If design is a philosophical non-option in nature natural laws and chance is left Neodarwinism is the best possibility left. Therefore the theory becomes the truth Scientific naturalism <-> materialism and ateism
Same Facts different presuppositions? Different conclusions?
What does the Bible tell us? Main difference: the world and everything in it created, not come by chance. Gen 1,1 God has revealed himself in all creation Ro 1,20. The two revelations of the physical world God keeps the world going at every moment (Col 1,17 og Heb 1,3) He is not a withdrawn God he is active right now. Any scientific theory that is not compatible with these statements is not possible to axcept
How God created? Different ways of understanding the creation narratives How to interpret the Bible How to view the natural revelation Creationists Young earth Old earth (Gap, progressiv) Theistic evolutionist Intelligent Design
Should we read the creation narratives as science or poetry? Specific creation stories in Gen 1, ch 1-2 and Psalm 104 If as pure science reject most of cosmology, geology, paleontology and evolutionary biology. Make own scientific theories. If as theological statements the overall meaning is there still, the details are not written in scientific language.
Gen 1,1: Day framework hypothesis. Realms created "Rulers" of realms created Day 1: Light; day and night Day 4: Sun, moon and stars Day 2: Sea and sky Day 5: Sea creatures; birds Day 3: Land and vegetation Day 6: Land creatures; man Organizing of the days Interpretation of the days Week Creation gap Day-age
Gen 1,1: Day - `yoma` BDB's Hebrew lexicon day, time, year day (as opposed to night) day (24 hour period) 1) as defined by evening and morning in Genesis 1 2) as a division of time: a working day, a day's journey days, lifetime (pl.) d) time, period (general) e) year f) temporal references: today, yesterday, tomorrow
An integrated model of creation? Progressiv creationism God created the foundations of life and mecanism for reproduction (... Be fruitfull and increase in number). The seventh day indicate a difference between creation-periods and maintainance-periods Acts 17,26 From one man he made every nation of men (races). This text opens up for variety/mutations with certain limits:the species (2 Mos 4,11). The prosess is supervised by God This is microevolution
An integrated model of creation? Macroevolution we find in the the creation periods. Information and knowledge (Logos John 1,1) was the source (God said, Heb 11,3) The creation prosess had several times of new input. ( God said several times) While the level of complexity n runs by natural law and chance, level n+1 needs new imput from God design
Questions to think about Has God created the univers and the biosphere so that there is possible to view the world both as created and as come by chance? The issue of free will Is God a smaler God if he has created matter and natural laws in such a way that man had to evolve through an evolutionistic prosess rather than created on the spot?
