1 Lane School Newsletter ~ August/September 2016 A Note from Ms. Egan s Desk Welcome back to the school year! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and fun summer filled with quality time spent with family and friends! It is with great excitement that I look forward to ringing in another outstanding school year at Lane filled with many new and engaging learning experiences for all students! The beginning of each new school year is such a special time filled with a wonderful sense of excitement and anticipation for the Lane staff, students, and families. It s a time of new beginnings where students are especially excited to reunite with friends, meet and greet their new teachers, and set new goals for a successful school year. As we ring in the school year, we are especially excited to showcase our renovated media center! The new space further fosters our 21st century learning goals and provides students with increased opportunities to use the media center more flexibly for collaborative learning. We are confident that the students will certainly enjoy everything that the new media center provides including more soft seating options and collaborative table spaces. Please remember to tour the media center at Curriculum Night! At Lane School, we continue to embrace technology integration as an essential piece of our 21st century learning environment. This year, we are excited to share that in addition to the 1:1 chromebooks in grades 3-6, we have continued the 1:1 initiative to the primary grades. All students in Kindergarten through second grade will have 1:1 ipads to support their learning in the classrooms this year! To keep up to date this school year, please visit our Lane School calendar located on our school website. Additionally, District 126 paper calendars will be sent home to the oldest child in the family during the first week of school. Please continue to read on as this newsletter contains important reminders, dates, and other general information. I wish everyone a successful, healthy, and productive school year!

2 New Faces at Lane School This year at Lane, we will be welcoming some new staff members to our Lane family! Ms. Brooke Swanson is our new 4th grade teacher. Ms. Rebecca Roccasalva is our new Pre-K teacher. Ms. Lesher, Ms. Taglieri, Ms. Yassine, and Mrs. Panici join our instructional aide team. ***Beginning of the Year Reminders*** Our Please school note: hours Supervision are from 8:30 A.M. until 2:45 P.M..M. The tardy bell rings at 8:25 A.M. The Lane School Office hours are 8:00 AM 4:00 PM. The tardy bell rings at 8:25 A.M. If your child is arriving to school late, a parent must sign them in at the office. Please familiarize yourself with the District 126 Parent/Student Handbook which can be found on our Lane School website at Hot lunch, breakfast, and milk delivery begins on the first day of school. Breakfast is served from 8:15 AM 8:30 AM and lunch/recess is scheduled from 11:30 AM 12:10 PM. PBS 126 As we ring in the school year, we will continue our PBS program to celebrate our Lane Lions and their positive choices throughout their school day! Please remind your child of the 3 R s each day before he/she leaves for school:*be R espectful, *Be R esponsible, *Be R eady to Learn. The PBS 126 System has 5 components: The 3 R s - R espect, R esponsibility, and R eady to Learn Character Counts Lessons Cool Tools Lesson plans used to teach students the behavioral expectations Tickets and/or Points A positive reinforcement system Discipline Action Referrals - Please remember that you can view your child s information including discipline through the Skyward Family Access platform. Since this information can be viewed via Family Access, paper copies of discipline forms are not sent home. We will continue to incorporate the Stop, Walk, Talk communication tool as part of our PBS program. We will also focus on our slogan this year, which is: Respect begins and ends with you!

3 Our goal is to teach students positive behaviors so that all children can work within a school environment that is safe, fun, free from distraction, and allows for all of our students to reach their maximum learning potential. Curriculum Night We look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 1st from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. The focus of this evening will be to provide parents with information specific to your child s grade level curriculum and academic expectations in the classroom. Additionally, this evening will provide you an opportunity to meet your child s teacher, and become reacquainted with Lane School. The grade level presentations are as follows: 6:30 PM 6:50 PM ~ K/1 st /2 nd Grade 6:55 PM 7:15 PM ~ 3 rd /4 th Grade 7:20 PM 7:40 PM ~ 5 th /6 th Grade Please remember to stop at the book fair to choose some new books with your children! PFO (Parent/Faculty Organization) Are you looking for a great way to get involved in your child s school? A great way to do this is by joining the Lane School PFO! We are able to provide fun, memorable, and exciting activities that go above and beyond the regular school day through the time and effort of our fantastic PFO members. Please stop by the PFO table during Curriculum Night to join as a member and volunteer your time for the various activities. ***PFO Back To School Ice Cream Social*** Please join the Lane School PFO on Friday, August 26th for a Back to School Ice Cream Social from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM. This is a free event for Lane families. Please come out to enjoy an ice cream treat with other Lane families, play fun games, and enjoy the dunk tank featuring Ms. Egan and other staff! We look forward to seeing you there!

4 Arrival/Dismissal Procedures To ensure the safety of all students, we have specific arrival and dismissal procedures in place. Please remember that these procedures have been established to provide all students with a safe arrival and dismissal from school. Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter. Arrival * Daily Supervision begins at 8:15 AM. *Car riders should be dropped off on Orchard Avenue. Cars should proceed SOUTH on Orchard Avenue and stop to let their children exit the WEST side of the car at the sidewalk near the playground. *Please do not park in the Village Hall parking lot as that requires the students to cross the street to get to the playground. Please do not turn around in the Village Hall parking lot. *The driver of the car should remain in the car. If your child can not exit the car independently, and needs assistance, please contact the Lane School office so arrangements can be made. This allows for smooth and consistent movement of the car rider line. *Please do not block the bus loading zone. *The Media Center doors will open at 8:15 AM so that the students can come right into the building. Dismissal *All car riders must be picked up on the rear playground. Please enter the rear playground entrance and follow the horseshoe procedure. Students will not be dismissed to cars parked on Orchard Avenue. *All walkers will be dismissed via the front door. Students are not allowed to be picked up in the front parking lot via vehicle unless it is for an after school activity. Students will not be dismissed to cars in the front parking lot. The Front Parking Lot is closed from 2:35 2:50. *Please do not walk through the front parking lot when walking home with your children. *When walking home from school, please use only the sidewalks and cross the street at the designated crosswalks. *If there are any changes in your child s regular dismissal routine, please send a letter to the teacher or contact the school office. If a letter is not received, we will follow their regular dismissal routine. NOTE: Bus riders must ride only their assigned bus, and non-bus riders are not permitted to ride a bus home with a friend.

5 Bicycle Riding at Lane School Bike racks are installed at Lane School. Students who normally ride the bus are not allowed to ride bicycles to school. All students who are walkers may ride a bike at any time. Bicycles must be walked on school property and locked in the bike rack. It is suggested that all bikes be registered by the Alsip Police Department. Lane School is not responsible for stolen or damaged bicycles. It is a parental decision whether or not to have your child ride a bike to school. Keep in mind that the advice provided by bicycle safety experts is that children in 2 nd grade and younger should not ride bikes unless accompanied by an adult. School Pictures Mark your calendars! Fall pictures are scheduled for Tuesday, September 13th at Lane. You will receive additional ordering information closer to the date. If you have any questions, please contact the Lane School office. Home-School Connection ~ Quick Tips Parents who play an active role in their children s education make a huge difference in their success. Please be sure to read with your child for 20 minutes every day. Your example reinforces the importance of literacy, and reading lets you and your child explore new worlds of fun and adventure together! Some Final Thoughts Once again, welcome back to another exciting year of academic and personal growth at Lane School. I am truly looking forward to a successful, healthy, and productive year for all members of the Lane School community. We are fortunate to have such great kids, supportive families, and the best staff around working together in a learning community where everyone follows our school motto to
