Safety Warnings and Precautions WARNING: When using tool, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of personal injury and damage to equipment. Read all instructions before using this tool! 1. Keep work area clean. Cluttered areas invite injuries. 2. Observe work area conditions. Do not use machines or power tools in damp or wet locations. Don t expose to rain. Keep work area well lit. 3. Keep children away. Children must never be allowed in the work area. Do not let them handle machines, tools, or extension cords. 4. Store idle equipment. When not in use, tools must be stored in a dry location to inhibit rust. Always lock up tools and keep out of reach of children. 5. Use the right tool for the job. Do not attempt to force a small tool or attachment to do the work of a larger industrial tool. There are certain applications for which this tool was designed. It will do the job better and more safely at the rate for which it was intended. Do not modify this tool and do not use this tool for a purpose for which it was not intended. 6. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry as they can be caught in moving parts. Protective, electrically non-conductive clothes and non-skid footwear are recommended when working. 3 7. Use eye and ear protection. Always wear ANSI approved impact safety goggles. Wear a full face shield if you are producing metal filings or wood chips. Wear an ANSI approved dust mask or respirator when working around metal, wood, and chemical dusts and mists. 8. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not reach over or across running machines. 9. Maintain tools with care. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and safer performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. The handles must be kept clean, dry, and free from oil and grease at all times. 10. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches. Check that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from the tool or machine work surface before beginning work with this tool. 11. Stay alert. Watch what you are doing, use common sense. Do not operate any tool when you are tired. 12. Check for damaged parts. Before using any tool, any part that appears damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment and binding of moving parts, cracks or chips in the dies/punches, or any other condition that may affect proper operation. Any part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by a qualified technician. 13. Replacement parts and accessories. When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts will void the warranty. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool. Approved accessories are available from Harbor Freight Tools. 14. Do not operate tool if under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Read warning labels on prescriptions to determine if your judgment or reflexes are impaired while taking drugs. If there is any doubt, do not operate the tool. 15. Maintenance. For your safety, service and maintenance should be performed regularly by a qualified technician. 16. Entanglement Hazard. Do not pinch yourself while using this tool. Keep fingers and clothing away from hinges and jaws of this tool when in use. 4 Unpacking When unpacking, check to make sure the following parts are included. (1) Hand Punch (6) Punches 1 / 8, 3 / 16, 1 / 4, 5 / 16, 3 / 8, 7 / 16 (6) Dies 1 / 8, 3 / 16, 1 / 4, 5 / 16, 3 / 8, 7 / 16 (1) Key If any parts are missing or broken, please call Harbor Freight Tools at the number on the cover of this manual. Operation 1. Select the Punch and Die size appropriate for your job. Make sure that the thickness of the work material does not exceed the recommended gauge for the hole size. Warning: Only use Punches and Dies of the same size together. Use of mismatched tools will cause damage to the tools and the work material. 2. Use a 3/32 hex driver (not included) to loosen both Hex Studs (10), so that they will not interfere with the insertion of the punch and die onto the tool. Punch Hex Stud (10) 3. Insert the selected punch into the same sized die. With the handles closed, insert the punch and die combination into the lower jaw, as shown in the photo. Using the Key Die (13), thread the die all the way into the lower jaw until it stops. Using a 3/32 hex driver (not included), tighten both Hex Studs (10). Gauge (6) Hex Stud (10) 4. If you plan to make a row of holes a uniform distance from the edge of the work material, set the Gauge (6) to the proper depth, and set it in place by tightening the Screw (9) with the Key (13). 5. Carefully measure the desired position of the holes, and mark these positions with a marker pen or scratch awl. WARNING: The edges of sheet metal are often very sharp. Always use gloves when handling sheet metal to prevent personal injury. 6. Before punching, it is a good idea to punch a test hole in a piece of scrap material. SKU Page 4 REV 07k

5 7. To punch, position the tool over the material, with the edge of the material protruding into the throat of the tool. Align the punch with the spot marked on the work material. 8. Using your hands, squeeze the Upper and Lower Handle (2 & 1) together, driving the Punch through the work material. Release the pressure on the handles. 9. Punched out material (chads) may lodge in the punch. Use a small drift pin, such as a nail set to knock the chads out. Do not use a punch that is blocked with chads, as it may not punch cleanly. WARNING: Keep your fingers, hair and clothing away from the jaws and hinges of this tool when in operation. Fingers or clothing may be caught and pulled in causing personal injury. NOTE: Never use any tool such as a clamp, jack or vice to squeeze the handles together, as this will cause damage to the tool, and potentially cause personal injury or property damage. Maintenance 1. When not in use, store the punch in a clean, dry place. Maintain a light film of oil on the punches and dies to prevent corrosion. Occasionally lubricate the hinges, set screws and screw threads with light machine oil. Keep the rubberized portions of the handles clean, dry, and grease-free. 2. Use only punches and dies specifically designed for this tool. 3. Over time the punches may become dull. Sharpen them using a low speed method, such as dressing with a steel or oilstone. High-speed sharpeners may overheat the tools, weakening them.
