1 INTRODUCTION PROGRAMME International Students Malmö University, Autumn Semester 2015 Thursday, 20 August 10:00 12:00 Welcome Meeting Location: Orkanen D138, Nordenskiöldsgatan 10 see no. 4 on map at the back Welcome to this introductory session where we will provide you with information to get you started at Malmö University as well as in Malmö and Sweden. You will meet the staff of the International Office and representatives from the Student Union and Erasmus Student Network while also getting a glimpse of what lies ahead during the next few weeks. 12:00 13:30 Meet some of the student organisations / Get your Österlen Bus Tour tickets Location: Orkanen, Lobby Meet with the Student Union and take the chance to chat with their different organisations. Maybe you ll get some ideas on what to do with your spare time while in Malmö. You can also buy your membership to the different organisations. After the Welcome meeting you also have the chance to buy a ticket for the Österlen Bus Tour, which is one of the activities in the Introduction (200 SEK). Tickets are sold on a first-come, firstserve basis. 13:30-15:30 Introduction to Swedish as a Foreign Language Location: Orkanen, D138 Get your first introduction to the language of your new home country as you struggle to learn those strange letters å, ä, ö and to understand soon-to-be familiar words such as hej, cykel and öppettider. 15:45 - late Games Meeting point: Orkanen, Lobby Bond with your new fellow students by participating in the Games. Bring comfortable shoes! This is an outdoor activity and we advise you to wear comfortable shoes and clothes. In case of rain, there will be an indoors activity. Get to know your peers and learn about ways to make your stay in Malmö as good as possible. Challenge yourself! 11:30 12:00 Start-Up, Malmö University Challenge - MUC Location: Orkanen, D131 The Malmö University Challenge, MUC, consists of activities that focus on helping you get to know your peers, introducing you to student services, and supporting you in practical matters such as being a new student in Sweden. There will also be a series of challenges that you are welcome to take part of. Join this start-up meeting to find out more! 13:00-14:00 Safety and Security Location: Orkanen, D131 If any lecture has it all, this one does: Emergency evacuation information, Swedish laws you are probably unaware of, a real police officer. Don t miss it! Trust us; you will want to know what to do if you lock yourself in in a classroom late at night. 16:00-17:30 Welcome Reception hosted by the City of Malmö Location: City Hall, Stortorget 2 see no. 6 on map at the back The Mayor and the city of Malmö invite all international students to a welcome reception with drinks, snacks, and a chance to see the inside of the City Hall! Meet with representatives from Cykelköket (The Bike Kitchen), get information on where to buy a used bike and what to think about when you buy one. During this tour you will get an introduction to the most important features of the university library. 4 Tuesday, 25 August 10:00 11:30 Malmö University Challenge - Face-to-face Location: The Canteen, the Student Centre, see no. 2 on map at the back Drop in, have a cup of coffee or tea and ask our staff your questions concerning: 1) insurance 2) residence permit 3) Swedish personal number. We will do our best to answer your questions! 13:00 15:00 Introduction to the Swedish Academic System Location: Gäddan, G124-G125 see no. 1 on map at back Coming from another academic culture, adjusting to the Swedish academic system can be quite difficult. This session gives you an insight into the Swedish university culture, the student-teacher relationship, work and examination forms, and the student s rights and responsibilities essential knowledge for your studies at university. 15:15 - Sauna Meeting point: Gäddan, Lobby Even if it s summer, it is still a perfect time to have a nice sauna! is going to take you to Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, a sauna located by the sea. Men and women have separate saunas and you can hire a towel at a small cost if you forgot your own. An ticket is required to attend this event. Tickets can be picked up from after the Welcome meeting (the tickets are free but there is a limited amount available. You do need to pay an entrance fee at the sauna later). Please note that there is a no clothing rule in the sauna Wednesday, 26 August 10:30 12:00 Malmö University Challenge - Swedish the Student Centre Location: Ground floor of the Student Centre Meet with the staff at the Student Centre and get inspired about the services you can take advantage of during your studies in Malmö. Free fika will be provided. 14:00 ~ 15:30 Visit to Your Faculty Meeting Point: Orkanen, D138 Meet up with representatives from your faculty and familiarize yourself in your new academic surroundings. Please note: Study related information will, in most cases, be given to you at your first day of class. 17:00 - Picnic Meeting point: Outside Triangeln Station (close to the Faculty of Odontology) Bring your own food, drinks and a blanket and meet up with fellow students and in one of Malmö s many beautiful parks, Pildammsparken. 5 Thursday, 27 August 10:00 12:00 Malmö University Challenge - Welcome to Careers Services, your bridge to the future Location: Orkanen D138 Find out what support and services are available to you if you re interested in finding employment during and/or after your studies. This session will even give you a sneak peek and some valuable tips on how you can market your skills and competencies. A guest speaker from EURES will also give you insight on the job market in Malmö and Sweden! 12:15 20:00 Österlen Bus Tour ticket needed Meeting point: Orkanen, front entrance You don t want to miss this excursion to the scenic South-Eastern part of Skåne called Österlen. Highlights of the tour include Ystad, a picturesque small town by the seaside dating back to the 11th century and Ale stenar. Sweden's largest preserved ship setting (stones set in the layout of a ship). You will also get the chance to taste some traditional smoked fish from one of the local smoke houses. Please note: Bring snacks/your own lunch. You can buy tickets after the Welcome meeting on 20 August. Friday, 28 August 11:00 12:00 Malmö University Challenge Wrap-up Location: Orkanen, D138 Attend this wrap-up session and hand in your completed list of challenges in order to be part of the prize drawing! 13:00 15:00 The Swedish Model A Political History of Sweden Location: Orkanen, D138 Socialist? Neutral? Boring? Get to know your new home country by tapping into its modern political history in this presentation which is much more entertaining than the tile may insinuate. 19:00 - late Pub Night Location: Student Union Pub, Bassängkajen 8 Come and mingle with new found friends and meet new friends.
