1 Group Descriptions: Please note that group availably is based on Associate s interests! Please check the calendar for a current list of the active groups at each site. Calendars are located at each site and on The P.E.E.R. Center website If there is a group you would like to participate in that is not created yet or is not currently available please let us know. Alcohol and Other Drug Recovery: We discuss any addiction. Specifically, we discuss recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. : is a group where we discuss anger from many different perspectives and how to respond to our anger. Anxiety Disorders: We talk about issues related to specific anxiety disorders including: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Phobias and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. : This group discusses ways to assert yourself to make sure that your rights are not violated. We also look at ways to make sure that you receive the privileges and services that you are entitled to. Attention Deficit Disorders: In the Attention Deficit Disorders, we discuss topics and issues related to different Attention Deficit Disorders. Aka ADD, ADHD Bipolar Support: We discuss the various things that are relevant to living with Bipolar Disorder, such as mood swings, and provide educational information as well as offering support and encouragement to one another. s: is a group where we discuss creating and maintaining appropriate and healthy boundaries. We also discuss how to alleviate unhealthy and inappropriate boundaries. Break the Cycle/ Man Up!: In Break the Cycle/Man Up! We address holistic recovery from a distinctly male perspective. We discuss any problem that a man can have that he may need to recover from (e.g. finances, drug and alcohol addiction, sex addiction, relationship issues etc.) Man Up! Also acts as a group where men can come together to talk about any issues (e.g. childhood to present relationship issues.) We try to eliminate the need for male bravado. We also remind ourselves that men can be victims too. Chronic Conditions: In this group, we discuss the problems associated with chronic conditions (as opposed to acute conditions). We recognize that individuals who suffer from chronic conditions face a number of issues such as, anger, fear, anxiety, depression, isolation, communication, pain management, and so forth. Thus we try to take a holistic approach to providing support for those who face Chronic Conditions and their loved ones. : In this group, we learn how to communicate respectfully. We discuss topics such as, verbal communication, how emotions affect conversations/perceptions and learning to listen. Computer Skills: Come to learn basic to intermediate computer skills (e.g. point and click, create s, surf web.) 1

2 Creative Expressions: In Creative Expression s associate s get together and share their poetry, art, and music. In this group associate s all different types of mediums to express ourselves creatively. : In coping skills, we talk about all sorts of healthy coping mechanisms to deal with various issues. We also discuss negative coping mechanisms and the effects that they have on people s lives. : is always interesting because you get to hear people s different views on how they see and look at different cultures. Then after we discuss what cultural diversity really is, people leave with a whole different outlook. Depression Support: We discuss issues related to depression. Associates share their experiences and support each other while learning new ways to cope. Emotions Group: Learning to handle our intense emotions requires new skills, support, and practice/practice/practice. In the Emotions Group we share what we ve learned about our emotions and how we manage them. We discuss readings that help us understand our emotions, where they come from, and what we can do to moderate them. Most importantly, we support one another s efforts to identify and express emotions more effectively. Employment Seekers/ Support: Some of us have been told we ll never be well enough to keep a job. Others have no work history or have been out of the workplace so long that we can t imagine how to start looking for employment. In employment seekers we explore ways to find employment. For some of us, it s easier to find employment than it is to keep it. The Employment Support group is a place to learn skills that help us handle workplace challenges. These include effective communication, assertiveness, how to accept corrective feedback, and accommodating workplace expectations. Equally important is the support that we give to peers as they manage workplace challenges. Grief and Loss: We talk about dealing with the loss of anything not just death. We discuss the loss of things such as health, a job or anything really as well as strategies for healing from our losses. : In this group, group members brainstorm solutions to common conflicts and discrepancies that come up at work and in life in general. Health Talks: We talk about health issues and how they relate to different mental health issues and addictions. We want to encourage physical wellness along with spiritual, psychological and other forms of wellness. : We talk about and discuss handouts about building healthy relationships. We also discuss how to maintain healthy relationships that we already have. LGBTQ Group: LGBTQ Education is a group for learning more about the community and its diversity. It s a place to have some of your questions answered. We talk about our similarities and differences as people and sexual beings. Also, there are opportunities to share stories, uplift one another, and give support for those in the LGBTQ community in recovery. PEER Spirit: PEERspirit is intended to provide a safe and intentional space where participants can freely discuss spirituality and its impact on their recovery and their lives. Free expression around the God of our understanding is encouraged. All faith or non-faith traditions are welcomed. All spiritual paths are respected. 2

3 Personality Disorder Group: In the Personality Disorder Group, we discuss topics and issues related to different Personality Disorders. Since there are a number of different Personality Disorders, we try to come up with broad topics rather than specific issues unique to a particular Personality Disorder. s and : At The PEER Center we want to be intentional about fostering discussion related to our recovery. As a group, is intended to facilitate such conversations in a small group environment. In we read about and discuss the life experiences of people living with mental illness and/or addiction. We may discuss how those experiences are different or similar to our own experiences. We support each other in a positive, uplifting atmosphere. : Positive thinking is an attitude that embraces self-improvement, success, affirmation, peace of mind, metaphysical healing and so forth. In group, we consider inspirational quotes, stories of those who overcome obstacles as well as valuable tips and steps that lead to and maintain a positive attitude. Recovery in Community: Recovery in the Community gives a brief overview of the Code of Conduct. It is a forum where associates can feel free to ask questions and staff can update the associates about the Code of Conduct. : : We discuss any addiction that a person is trying to get over and could easily go back into doing (e.g. Alcohol and other drug addiction, gambling, shopping, pornography, etc.) : Resource sharing is a group that provides community resources and events going on in the community. It is also a way to learn about places to get free food, clothing, etc. Schizophrenia Education/ Support: We discuss other schizoid illnesses in addition to just schizophrenia. The education group is open to those who do not have schizophrenia. In Schizophrenia support we have discussions about topics such as, how to deal with symptoms and what coping mechanisms do and do not work. : We talk about building self-esteem through methods such as positive self-talk and positive affirmation. Veterans Support: Group dedicated to Veterans to share their experiences and resources. Walking Group: We walk to different scenic venues within the community in attempt to cultivate wellness. : We talk about anything that the associates want to discuss. We want to encourage all types of wellness including: spiritual, psychological and other forms of wellness. Women and Trauma: In this group we educate ourselves on trauma, what it is, its lingering impact on our physical and mental health and overall wellness. We share our stories and the ways we have survived. We share lessons and tips on coping and how we stay safe and well. We also utilize the Safe Sanctuary S.E.L.F. Manual by Sandra Bloom. : Women s recovery takes a multi-faceted integrated, psychosocial approach to address the needs of women who have suffered abuse, trauma, drug and alcohol addiction and so forth. The goal is to help the women in the group reach a state of resiliency through the restoration of mind, body, and spirit. 3
