3 Oracle WebLogic Server VM Template The Oracle WebLogic Server VM template provides the software necessary to easily deploy WebLogic Server applications in an Oracle VM environment. This document describes how to create a WebLogic Server virtual machine using the WebLogic Server VM template. Topics include:! Roadmap for Using the WebLogic Server VM Template! 4 Roadmap for Using the WebLogic Server VM Template The following section summarizes the overall process for using the WebLogic Server VM template to create and use a WebLogic Server virtual machine. Table 1 Roadmap for Using the WebLogic Server AMI Step 1. Download the WebLogic Server VM template to the Oracle VM server. 2. Install the template on the Oracle VM server. 3. Import the template into the VM Manager and approve the imported template. Description Two WebLogic Server VM templates are available: x86 (32 Bit) x86-64 (64 Bit) Each VM template is contained in a zip file that you can download from the Oracle E-delivery Web site to the /OVS/seed_pool directory on the Oracle VM server: Use the unzip tool to uncompress the zip archive into the /OVS/seed_pool directory. One of the following template directories is created, depending on the template you downloaded: /OVS/seed_pool/OVM_EL52_jeos_i386_PVM_WebLogic10gR3_v 10 (32 Bit) /OVS/seed_pool/OVM_EL52_jeos_x86_64_PVM_WebLogic10gR3 _v10(64 Bit) For a description of the files installed in the template directory, see WebLogic Server VM Template Contents on page 5. The procedures for importing the VM templates into the Oracle VM Manager and approving the imported templates are provided in the Oracle VM Manager User s Guide at When importing the WebLogic Server VM template, you will need to provide the following information: Template Name: The name of the directory created when you unzipped the template file Operating System: Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 (x86) or Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 64-bit (x86-64) Virtual Machine System Username: root Virtual Machine System Password: ovsroot 2 Oracle WebLogic Server VM Template Reference

Description The procedures for creating a virtual machine instance using an imported template are described in the Oracle VM Manager User s Guide at You will need to specify the following information: A name for the virtual machine. This name will be used as the name of the directory in which the files associated with this virtual machine are stored. When you create a virtual machine instance, the directory is created in the OVS/running_pool directory. A console password. This password will be used to access the VNC console for this instance only. 5. Start the virtual machine. The procedures for starting a virtual machine are the same for all virtual machines. For details, see Starting and Shutting Down a Virtual Machine in Oracle VM Manager User s Guide at BABFCFCG When the virtual machine has started successfully, the status changes to Running. 6. Establish the connection to the instance. On the initial boot of the virtual machine, you need to specify the network configuration to be used for that instance. To do so: Open the console and log in using the console password you specified when you created the virtual machine instance as described in step 4. Respond to the prompts, indicating whether to use DHCP or a static IP address. Oracle WebLogic Server VM Template Reference 3

Login as root Once you have established the connection, you are prompted to log in to the operating system using the root login and the initial root password: login: root Initial root password: ovsroot On subsequent logins, you can log in to the virtual machine instance using a standard SSH client. 8. Use WebLogic Server on Oracle VM. The WebLogic Server runtime environment on Oracle VM is essentially the same as a standard, headless Linux environment. On the first login, the WebLogic Server banner is displayed, and the JumpStart tool is invoked. On subsequent logins, only the banner is displayed. You are prompted by the JumpStart tool to choose one of the following options: Start an Administration Server in the WebLogic Server default domain. Create a new WebLogic Server domain using the WebLogic Domain Configuration Wizard. Use other WebLogic Server tools, such as the pack command, to deploy your domain and applications. 7 WebLogic Server VM Template Contents Table 2 describes the files that are installed on the Oracle VM Server after you unzip the downloaded template file. 8 Table 3 Software Version Numbers Component Description Version Number OEL JeOS Operating System JRockit JDK WebLogic Server OEL JeOS is a secure, minimized, headless version of the Oracle Enterprise Linux operating system JRockit provides the Java run-time environment for the WebLogic Server instances. The JRockit components/features provided in the following directories are not included in the AMI: /demo /missioncontrol /sample src.zip /bin/console /bin/jrmc The WebLogic Server components included in a complete WebLogic Server installation, with the exception of the following, are included in the AMI: Server Examples WebLogic Web Server Plug-ins Both Workshop components Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2 JeOS JRockit JDK 6.0 R27.6 (Java version 1.6.0_05) WebLogic Server Directory Structure The directory structure for each WebLogic Server VM instance is similar to a typical Linux file system. It contains the following directories:! / The root file system for the JeOS operating system.! /opt/oracle Directory that contains both the JRockit JDK and WebLogic Server product components. This directory should be reserved for the JRockit and WebLogic Server product components only. You should not create or transfer domains into this directory.! /u01 Default storage provided for each virtual machine. By default, this is configured as a 1GB disk that contains the WebLogic Server default domain. Most applications should fit 6 Oracle WebLogic Server VM Template Reference

9 on this disk. If, however, your applications require additional disk space, you can create a new disk and add it to the existing VM. Security Considerations! Oracle recommends that you change the root password after the first login! In the WebLogic Server VM template, the Linux firewall iptables is disabled by default. You may want to enable iptables to further enhance the security of the VM instance. In the default iptables rules on the instance, only the SSH port (TCP port 22) is opened. If you enable iptables, you will also need to open additional ports (such as 7001, 7002) to allow network access to WebLogic Server. Guidelines for Using WebLogic Server Once you have logged into the virtual machine instance, you can use WebLogic Server just as if you were working in a standard, headless Linux production environment. The JeOS operating system is headless and does not provide a GUI. Therefore, if you attempt to execute a program that requires a local GUI, such as QuickStart, you will get a headless exception. A JumpStart tool presents you with three options that allow you to start using WebLogic Server immediately. Table 4 describes these options. Table 4 JumpStart Tool Options Option 1. Use other WebLogic Server tools to deploy your domain and applications Description A default WebLogic Server domain is preinstalled in the /u01/domains/default_domain directory on the virtual machine. For more information about this option, see Starting the Administration Server in the Default Domain on page 8. You can create your own domain using the Configuration Wizard. For more information, see Creating a New WebLogic Domain on page 8 You can use standard WebLogic Server tools as described in the WebLogic Server documentation. 10 For complete details about using WebLogic Server, please refer to the WebLogic Server documentation at Starting the Administration Server in the Default Domain A default WebLogic domain is preinstalled in the /u01/domains/default_domain directory. After you have started and logged into the running instance, the JumpStart tool provides the option to start the Administration Server that is packaged in the default domain. When you choose this option, the Administration Server is started in the background on port After the Administration Server has started successfully, you can tail (that is, view) the standard output, which is redirected to the following default_domain directory: /u01/domains/default_domain/adminserver.out When the Administration Server is fully up and running, the following message is displayed in the standard output: Server started in RUNNING state At that point, you can connect to the running server using the Administration Console at the following URL : where host refers to the IP address or DNS name of the virtual machine. You can log in to the Administration Console using the default WebLogic Server administrator user name and password of weblogic/weblogic. Oracle recommends that you change the WebLogic Server administrator password as soon as possible. To view the configuration details of the default domain, you can refer to the WebLogic Server configuration file (config.xml) in the /u01/domains/default_domain/config directory. You can restart the JumpStart tool at any time by typing wls_jumpstart from the command line. Creating a New WebLogic Domain One of the main differences between running WebLogic Server on JeOS and a standard Linux is that the JeOS operating system is headless and does not provide a GUI. Therefore, if you choose to create a new WebLogic domain, you need to run the Domain Configuration Wizard in console mode. You can do so by selecting the second JumpStart option, or by using the following command: /opt/oracle/weblogic/common/bin/config.sh -mode=console 8 Oracle WebLogic Server VM Template Reference

11 For information about creating domains using the Domain Configuration Wizard, see Creating WebLogic Domains Using the Configuration Wizard at Transferring an Existing Domain If you choose to transfer an existing domain from another machine to the virtual machine instance, you can do so using the same methods that you use in a non-oracle VM environment. For example, one method to transfer the domain is to use the pack command to create a template jar file that contains a snapshot of your domain, copy the jar file to the virtual machine instance using an SSH-compatible file transfer client such as scp or sftp, and unpack it on the virtual machine instance using the unpack command. Securing WebLogic Server To ensure the most secure environment for running WebLogic Server on Oracle VM, you should take the same basic security measures required for a non-oracle VM implementation of WebLogic Server.
