3 Overview The purpose for electives in year three is for career exploration. Each elective is two weeks in duration (with the exception of research) and must be completed at an NYMC affiliated institution. You will be assigned your electives from among your top choices that are listed. Every effort will be made to accommodate your top career preferences. Please note that not every elective is offered at every affiliate hospital. If elective specialty is your TOP priority, you will have the opportunity to indicate this on your survey. Please note each student is responsible for his/her own transportation and housing during their assigned elective. 5 ANESTHESIOLOGY /Non-: Anesthesia Career Exploration in Anesthesia MET, SJH, WMC The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Anesthesia. 1. Recognize the scope of practice of Anesthesiologists, including pre-operative evaluation, anesthetic decision making, airway management, pain management, pulmonary and cardiac physiology, anesthetic pharmacology, and basic and invasive monitoring. 2. Recognize the elements of pre-anesthetic evaluations of patients (including history- taking, physical examination, and analysis of common laboratory results) 3. Understand the basic principles of administering regional and general anesthesia, IV sedation, and monitored care, as well as the side effects and complications of the various anesthetics and anesthetic interaction with surgery. The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For surgical services, this includes observing operating room activities, rounding on patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. Varies, but approximately 7AM-5PM All 2 week career exploration electives are credit/no credit. 8 OPHTHALMOLOGY /Non-: Ophthalmology Career Exploration in Ophthalmology MET, NYEE, SJH, WMC The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Ophthalmologic Surgery. 1. Recognize the scope of practice of Ophthalmologists, including the common conditions that present for evaluation, the methods used to assess and manage patients and range of operative and non-operative interventions utilized by Ophthalmologists. 2. Develop a knowledge base of terminology commonly used in the practice of Ophthalmology 3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of exam techniques and equipment used by Ophthalmologists in the assessment of patients who present for evaluation The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. Students are also expected to attend scheduled procedures in the operating room with his/her team. For outpatient services, this includes attendance at clinical sessions and case conferences as scheduled. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. 9 Academic Year DERMATOLOGY /Non-: Dermatology Career Exploration in Dermatology MET The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Dermatology. 1. Recognize the scope of practice of Dermatologists, including the assessment and management of patients who present for evaluation and range of tools and techniques available for Dermatologists to use in daily practice 2. Utilize appropriate morphologic terminology to describe conditions of the skin The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. 10 ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY Career Exploration Electives for Year Three /Non-: Orthopedics Career Exploration in Orthopedics MET, SJH, WMC The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Orthopedic Surgery. 1. Recognize the scope of practice of Orthopedics including adult reconstruction, sports medicine, hand surgery, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, musculoskeletal oncology and trauma surgery. 2. Recognize the common conditions that present for evaluation the methods used to assess and manage patients and range of operative and non-operative interventions utilized by Orthopedic Surgeons. 3. Develop a knowledge base of the terminology used in the field of Orthopedics. 4. Demonstrate an evaluation of the musculoskeletal system including history taking, physical examination of the spine and extremities, and interpretation of basic diagnostic tests. The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. Students are also expected to attend scheduled procedures in the operating room with his/her team. For outpatient services, this includes attendance at clinical sessions and case conferences as scheduled. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. 11 OTOLARYNGOLOGY - Head & Neck Surgery /Non-: Otolaryngology Career Exploration in Otolaryngology MET, NYEE Learning Objectives: The goal of this elective is to expose medical students to a career in Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery Recognize the scope of practice of Head and Neck Surgeons, including the common conditions that present for evaluation the methods used to assess and manage patients and range of operative and non-operative interventions utilized by Head and Neck Surgeons. The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. Students are also expected to attend scheduled procedures in the operating room with his/her team. For outpatient services, this includes attendance at clinical sessions and case conferences as scheduled. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. 12 PATHOLOGY /Non-: Pathology Career Exploration in Pathology WMC, SJH The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Pathology. 1. Develop a knowledge base of pathologic terminology. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of diagnostic pathology and the scope of practice of pathologists. The student will participate in the full range of activities on the service they are assigned. This will include departmental conferences, scheduled procedures, and educational meetings. 9AM-5PM All 2 week career exploration electives are credit/no credit. 15 PLASTIC SURGERY /Non-: Plastic Surgery Career Exploration in Plastic Surgery MET The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Plastic Surgery. 1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of Plastic Surgery exam techniques and equipment 2. Demonstrate familiarity with common Plastic Surgery diagnoses and surgical procedures 3. Develop a knowledge base of Plastic Surgery terminology The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. Students are also expected to attend scheduled procedures in the operating room with his/her team. For outpatient services, this includes attendance at clinical sessions and case conferences as scheduled. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. 16 RADIATION ONCOLOGY Career Exploration Electives for Year Three Radiation Oncology Career Exploration in Radiation Oncology WMC /Non-: **For information regarding our department the students are encouraged to visit the website The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to the specialty of radiation oncology and role of radiation therapy in the management of cancer. 1. Understand the role of the following individuals in the team-based care of a patient requiring radiation therapy: Radiation Oncologist, Radiation Physicist, and Radiation Therapist. 2. Understand the basics of radiation oncology as a specialty, conventional and advanced methods of radiation services (e.g. Conventional External beam radiation therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery/ SRS, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy/IMRT), Brachytherapy and Hyperthermia) 3. Recognize common conditions encountered in radiation oncology. Under the supervision of a preceptor, the student actively participates in the evaluation of patients referred to the department for consultation. The student will be assigned to a radiation therapist who will illustrate through his/ her everyday experience with patients some of the basic facts of cancer etiology, natural history and efficacy of therapy. The fundamentals of the effect of radiation will be illustrated and discussed in informal sessions covering the method of planning therapy, the various modalities of irradiation, their potential and limitations. 17 RADIOLOGY /Non-: Radiology Career Exploration in Radiology September - June SJH The goal of this elective is to expose interested medical students to a career in Radiology. 1. Be conversant with different imaging modalities and assessment of test appropriateness as it relates to commonly encountered diseases or symptoms 2. Understand basic appearance of normal and abnormal imaging on plain film radiography, CT, MRI, and ultrasound 3. Have greater understanding of medical imaging as it relates to anatomy and physiology of normal processes and disease states 4. Understand the cost-benefit ratio regarding diagnostic, screening and surveillance imaging for benign and malignant disease Multimodality rotation through radiology department that will introduce the student to plain film, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine (NM), mammography (M), and interventional radiology (IR). Students can rotate through all modalities. 9:30AM-3:30PM All 2 week career exploration electives are credit/no credit. Students will be evaluated on his/ her 14 P a g e
18 REHABILITATION MEDICINE Career Exploration Electives for Year Three /Non-: Rehabilitation Medicine Career Exploration in Rehabilitation Medicine MET The goal of this course is to provide students with an ability to evaluate patients with chronic disabling disorders and to understand the impact of disability on the individual, the family, and the community. 1. Describe the scope of practice of Physiatry. 2. Demonstrate familiarity with the common conditions that present to a physiatrist for evaluation and management. 3. Understand the roles of the members of the physiatry team in the care of patients including: physical, occupational, and speech therapists; psychologists; social workers; vocational counselors and prosthetist- orthotists. This program is designed as an overview of Rehabilitation Medicine. It provides balanced theoretical instruction through lectures and seminars, and practical experience by patient demonstrations and clinic participation. The effects of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary disorders on function are covered, as well as the performance of physiatric examinations. The use of special techniques and the prescription of physical modalities and therapeutic exercise in chronic conditions are outlined. Also discussed are the roles of physical, occupational, and speech therapists; psychologists; social workers; vocational counselors and prosthetist- orthotists in comprehensive rehabilitation programs. 9AM-5PM All 2 week career exploration electives are credit/no credit. 19 UROLOGY /Non-: Urology Career Exploration in Urology WMC The goal of this course is to provide students with an overview of the field of Urology. By the end of the elective the student should be able to: 1. Recognize the approach to the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of patients with urologic disorders 2. Correlate underlying pathophysiology of urologic with direct patient management. The student will participate in the full range of activities on the clinical service they are assigned. For inpatient services, this includes rounding on service patients as a member of a team, attending scheduled conferences and daily morning report. Students are also expected to attend scheduled procedures in the operating room with his/her team. For outpatient services, this includes attendance at clinical sessions and case conferences as scheduled. If applicable, the student is encouraged to take call with a member of the clinical team. Varies, but approximately from 7AM-5PM All 2 week career exploration electives are credit/no credit. Students will be evaluated on his/her 16 P a g e
20 RESEARCH Various departments sponsor students interested in pursuing research during the third year. To engage in a research program in year three, students must commit to a minimum of 4 weeks. Students will be required to complete the CITI on-line human subject research training course during his/ her elective period if not already completed. Students will also be required to submit a description of his/ her proposed research activity and a progress report at the end of the 4-week block. All electives are credit/no credit. Students will be evaluated on his/ her active participation and demonstrated professionalism. The following departments offer research opportunities for interested third year medical students: 1.
