1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for Configuring Genesis GenSwitch to Interoperate with Avaya Aura Communication Manager R5.2.1 Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe a compliance-tested configuration consisting of Genesis Systems Corporation GenSwitch PBX Management solution and Avaya Aura Communication Manager R Genesis offers a unified management and reporting solution which provides a simplified unified interface for less technically skilled users to administer endpoints on a variety of communication systems, including Avaya Aura Communication Manager, Avaya Communication Server 1000, and Nortel Meridian systems. This compliance test focused on the integration of Genesis GenSwitch with Avaya Aura Communication Manager R Information in these Application Notes has been obtained through DevConnect compliance testing and additional technical discussions. Testing was conducted via the DevConnect Program at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 18

2 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe a compliance-tested configuration consisting of Genesis Systems Corporation GenSwitch PBX Management solution and Avaya Aura Communication Manager R Genesis offers a unified management and reporting solution which provides a simplified unified interface for less technically skilled users to administer endpoints on a variety of communication systems, including Communication Manager, Avaya Communication Server 1000, and Nortel Meridian systems. This compliance test focused on the integration of Genesis GenSwitch with Communication Manager R The GenSwitch solution uses a telnet SAT interface from an application server to communicate with Communication Manager. Users access the server using a web browser in order to perform administrative tasks. The GenSwitch solution was tested in parallel with Communication Manager R6.0.1 and R5.2.1 as well as the Call Accounting module with Communication Manager R Separate Application Notes for these solutions titled Application Notes for Configuring Genesis GenSwitch to Interoperate with Avaya Aura Communication Manager R6.0.1 and Application Notes for Configuring Genesis Call Accounting to Interoperate with Avaya Aura Communication Manager R6.0.1 can be found at 2. General Test Approach and Test Results The compliance test focused on the capability to perform station Adds, Changes and Deletes in the attached Avaya Aura Communication Manager system Interoperability Compliance Testing The compliance test validated the ability of the application to Add, Change and Delete digital and IP stations. Reference Configuration Figure 1 illustrates the compliance test configuration consisting of: Avaya Aura Communication Manager Various IP and Digital endpoints Genesis GenSwitch server Windows PC used for browser access to the GenSwitch UI. Note that while the test configuration illustrates two Communication Manager platforms, these Application Notes focus on the Communication Manager R5.2.1 test which was performed in parallel with Communication Manager R Figure 1 Genesis GenSwitch Compliance Test Configuration 3 of 18

Equipment and Software Validated The following equipment and version were used in the reference configuration described above: Equipment Version Avaya S8720 Server and G650 Media Avaya Aura Communication Manager R5.2.1 Gateway SP9 Avaya Phones 9650 H.323 FW H.323 FW D N/A Windows 2008 R2 Server Genesis GenSwitch (Nov. 2011)* *Note: Genesis does not manage releases with a single release number. The solution contains numerous components which are modified as required. The solution tested was the Generally Available release as of November, 2011 which included support for Communication Manager. 4 of 18

Configure Avaya Aura Communication Manager Configuration of Communication Manager required the addition of a user account for the application to use in order to login and perform the various tasks. No other configuration was required Configure Communication Manager Details User Accounts can be created and managed from the System Management Interface using a web browser. Click on the Administration > Server (Maintenance) link, then click on the Administer Accounts link under Security in the left panel. For the Compliance Test, a Privileged Administrator account was created as shown below, click Submit to continue. Note that in an organization with multiple users responsible for administration of user stations, additional user accounts could be configured as described above to enable audit histories for each user. The GenSwitch application requires the ability to collect a variety of information, but only requires the ability to modify (Add, Delete and Change) stations. Group profiles are administered from the SAT interface and contain granular permissions for groups of users. Details of group profile administration are beyond the scope of this document and can be found in [1] and [2]. Administrators should consult these guides to learn how to restrict user accounts to necessary tasks if required. 5 of 18

6 Enter a login name (genesis in this example) and select an appropriate Additional groups (profile) from the selection box. For the compliance test, the prof18 group was used which is the default for privileged users. Choose Password for the Select type of authentication and provide an appropriate password in the two password fields. Ensure the Force password/key change on next login is set to No. The GenSwitch application requires all credentials be pre-defined. Click Submit to complete the account creation task. 6 of 18

7 6. Configure Genesis GenSwitch Genesis or an approved installer will install and initially configure all server components. Details of the steps are beyond the scope of this document. This will include provisioning site specific information and site license(s) Genesis GenSwitch Configuration Details The GenSwitch application is accessed via a web browser. Enter where <hostname> is the IP address or qualified domain name of the GenSwitch server. Step Description 1. Log in to the system using credentials supplied by the installer. 7 of 18

8 Step Description 2. Select the Site If the system is configured for more than one site, select the site to interact with and choose the tab for the MACs application. 8 of 18

9 Step Description The initial Avaya Switch Management screen provides a list of all administered stations on the selected system, and a visual diagram of the tasks. Clicking on the objects in the diagram or the links in the navigation panel will launch to the respective task screens. 9 of 18

10 Step Description 3. Configure Login settings On the navigation panel, click System Configuration > Update switch settings and provide appropriate Username and Password matching those created in Step 5.1. Select Telnet Connection for the Avaya PBX Connection method. In the Telnet Settings, provide the IP Addess and TCP port to use for the SAT connection to Communciation Manager. This may vary between port 5023 or 5022 depending on which ports have been opened up for SAT by the System Administrator. Click Save to complete the task. 10 of 18

11 7. Verification Steps Verify that the GenSwitch (GSQM) and Genesis Data Collection (PORTSERV) applications are online and operational by ensuring their status is displayed as Running (online). This screen can be viewed by clicking the GenStart icon (not shown) in the Windows System Tray on the Genesis server. Each service can be started, shutdown or restarted by right clicking and choosing the appropriate option from the popup menu (not shown). 11 of 18

12 Phones were added, changed and removed from Avaya Aura Communication Manager using the GenSwitch application. Following is a walkthrough of screens used to add a station to illustrate use of the application. These application notes will not cover each type of transaction in detail. For details on this and other tasks, refer to GenSwitch user documentation. Click on the Add phone radio button or icon on the main Perform MACs page which is accessed by either clicking the Perform MACs link in the navigation panel or clicking on the Add a phone icon on the Avaya Switch Management view illustrated in Section 6, Step 2. Select the Phone type (IP phone in this illustration), an appropriate template by clicking the Select link (4620 selected in this illustration), and provide an Extension Number (DN), and Extension Name. For Analog and Digital phones, a Port number must also be provided. Click Verify to confirm the extension is not currently in use. Click Continue to proceed to the Feature Options screen. 12 of 18

13 Most settings are preconfigured in a template. Templates are user editable using the Manage Template links in the navigation panel (not covered in these application notes). For settings requiring modification, click the Select link next to each item, provide the data in the Data field under the Change a Feature heading and click Apply. Repeat for each Phone Feature Setting requiring modification, then click Save to complete this part of the task. Note that descriptions of features can be added in the Edit Description field and this will appear to all users in the future. This is a useful way to add custom descriptions that will help users understand what options to use for the settings commonly modified at the site. 13 of 18

14 Click on the Button assignments radio button to display the Button Assignment screen. Each button is represented in the Select a key to Modify list. Once a key is selected from the list, a feature can be assigned to that button by clicking on a feature from the Available Key Features list. Lines with a + in front may be expanded to see the list of features in the category. 14 of 18

15 Enter any required data in the fields under the Initial Value: label. These will differ depending on the feature selected on the right side. A preconfigured description of each feature appears in the text box near the bottom of the screen. Like descriptions on the Feature option screen, sites may elect to modify these. For each key modified, click Apply to continue editing, then click Save to complete the task. 15 of 18

16 Click View > Queued Transactions in the navigation panel to see pending tasks. A typical task will take ten to thirty seconds to process. Tasks which are scheduled to run at a specific time will appear in the Queue until the scheduled time. Click on the Select link to review details of a pending task (not shown). Click View > Past Transactions in the navigation panel to see past tasks. A task that has been successfully processed will appear (in green font) as Done in the Status column. A task that fails will appear with an error description in red in the Status and Action columns. Details of errors can be viewed by clicking the Details link in the first column. From separate SAT sessions logged into Communication Manager, changes were verified using the Display Station X command and comparing the displayed information to the information that was entered in the GenSwitch application (not shown). 16 of 18
