1 National Trust for Historic Preservation Chief Advancement Officer The National Trust for Historic Preservation seeks to recruit a Chief Advancement Officer to be based in Washington, D.C. About the National Trust for Historic Preservation Founded in 1949 by congressional charter to support the preservation of America s diverse historic buildings, neighborhoods, and heritage, the mission of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (National Trust) is to save the places that shape the American experience to honor our personal and shared stories and inspire a more vibrant future. In addition to leading advocacy campaigns to protect some of the country s most important cultural resources, the National Trust stewards a nationally significant network of historic sites, provides leadership in setting national policy, and provides a growing educational resource through articles, journals, case studies, conferences and training. In early 2011, the National Trust undertook a comprehensive review of its programs and its role within the preservation movement as a whole. The result was a new strategic framework, Preservation10X, that seeks to expand the reach and results of the organization ten-fold. Through P10X, the organization seeks to dramatically increase the National Trust s commitment to direct, on-the-ground action at important and threatened sites nationwide. It has also committed itself to growing a larger and more diverse base of local preservationists to ensure the health of the preservation movement going forward. To tackle these challenges, the National Trust must find a way to reach beyond its current base of supporters and make preservation visible and relevant to a much broader group of like-minded constituents. The good news is that marketing research conducted by the National Trust has already identified a promising target audience: perhaps as many as 15 million Americans who may share the preservation ethic and many of whom are taking action on behalf of historic places. This group is younger than the National Trust s traditional leader base half are under the age of 35 and they are as diverse as America. They are the future of the National Trust and the preservation movement, but they are virtually untapped currently.

2 Page 2 The National Trust envisions a future in which all Americans live and work in strong, vibrant communities enriched by a sense of history. Now five years into the adoption of P10X, the organization is primed to take advantage of a deeper well of preservation results on-the-ground to engage even greater levels of partnership, visibility and support. The organization has made significant progress with the roll-out of its flagship advocacy program, National Treasures; has charted a course for even greater levels of stewardship and financial sustainability for its 27 National Trust Historic Sites; and has developed ground-breaking research on the role of historic buildings in building vibrant cities as part of its Livable Cities Initiative. To undertake all this work, the National Trust has developed a five-year financial plan that projects both operating and capital needs as well as potential strategies for funding this vision. It has launched The Campaign for America s National Treasures, a $200 million comprehensive campaign, and successfully completed the quiet phase, securing $140 million. It has quintupled its roster of digital preservation allies; has increased by four-fold its annual media placements; launched a state-of-the-art web site, savingplaces.org; and expanded the reach of its flagship publication, the award-winning quarterly magazine, Preservation. The National Trust is a 400-person organization (260 full time and approximately 140 part-time and seasonal staff), with an operating budget of $50 million and an endowment in excess of $230 million. The National Trust has 8 field offices and a headquarters in the historic Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. Its non-profit subsidiary, the National Main Street Center, is a leader in downtown revitalization. Its for-profit subsidiary, the National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC) is a leader in historic and solar tax credit projects, and manages National Trust Tours and National Trust Insurance Services. NTCIC has recently launched the National Trust Historic Real Estate Fund to make debt and equity investments in model historic rehabilitation projects. For more information about the National Trust for Historic Preservation, please visit: About the Position The National Trust is currently seeking a Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) to lead the revenue-generation efforts of the organization. The CAO is a new position that merges the roles of Chief Development Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, and will be charged with the opportunity to bring together 60+ professionals from our former fundraising and marketing divisions under innovative new leadership, as well as inspiring all parts of the Trust to be aware of how their work and projects are relevant to philanthropy.

3 Page 3 Reporting to the CEO and partnering with the Board, senior leadership and staff, the CAO plays a critical role in shaping and implementing the organization s overall revenue and brand building strategy. In this capacity, the CAO has day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, and managing all annual and major-gift fundraising-related activities; developing new earned income initiatives; leading marketing, branding, and public relations; and helping lead the National Trust to engage a larger, broader and more culturally diverse audience. The CAO helps to foster a culture of revenue accountability within the organization and ensures that systems are in place to effectively secure resources required for its work and to leverage fundraising at and between headquarters, field offices and historic sites in support of the organization s strategic objectives. The CAO leads staff and high level volunteers in developing strategies to strengthen and build the organization s donor base, including the execution of the campaign and substantial growth in the annual giving program. As a member of the Executive Team, the CAO is an advisor to other divisional leaders regarding optimal revenue strategies. The CAO also serves as organizational representative to the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees and liaison to the Campaign Cabinet. The CAO should bring an engaging capacity and excitement to build public/private partnerships to help achieve the National Trust s strategic goals. In addition to providing internal leadership, the CAO will expand the reach and influence of the National Trust through interactions with public, private, and philanthropic leaders. The CAO should be an individual who thrives on working with leaders who are passionate about investing in the organization s mission and vision. A critical priority for the CAO will be to successfully complete the National Trust s $200 million campaign within the next two years and put in place a sustainable system for cultivating and securing philanthropic support going forward. The CAO should have a proven track record of developing strategies that lead to significant revenue growth, and a demonstrated capacity to engage high powered nonprofit and public volunteers. The broad goals and responsibilities for the CAO include: Organizational Leadership Provide strategic leadership in growing revenue at the National Trust. Lead that effort with the Executive Team in partnership with the CEO. Cultivate effective relationships with the National Trust board, key subsidiary boards, principal gift donors, foundations, and others who can impact the generation of new revenue streams. Become the champion across the organization for revenue-centric strategies and work with the Executive Team to understand revenue impacts of current and proposed programmatic strategies.

4 Page 4 Lead the institutional marketing of the organization, helping to ensure effective overall positioning of the National Trust before the public and within its field, and supporting the CEO and other senior staff in their public roles. Division Leadership Lead all aspects of the Advancement division, including decisions regarding: strategic direction, cross-divisional relationships, budgeting, and staffing (recruitment; professional development; performance management; motivational leadership; team management). Establish and manage an advancement operating plan that ties directly to the organization s five-year financial plan, incorporating annual and campaign objectives. Focus efforts of the organization on three primary areas of growth: major gift fundraising and planned giving; annual giving, including direct mail membership and growth of online community of donors; and earned income from related business opportunities. Lead the use of public relations, community outreach, publications and other marketing tools of the National Trust to promote growth in revenue and advocacy. Provide strategic oversight of the National Trust s new CRM system and build a best practices development services team to support the National Trust s front line fundraisers. Recruit, retain and help maximize the potential of a culturally diverse and highly effective staff. Keep informed of developments in philanthropy, fund development and marketing as well as the general fields of management and the not-for-profit sector, bringing insights that are applicable to the National Trust. Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes: The CAO should ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes: Professional Qualifications: Demonstrate a record of innovative leadership within the nonprofit, philanthropic, private or public sector. Experience building a comprehensive fundraising and marketing operation which aligns all aspects of revenue development, including: annual, major and online giving; corporate partnerships; advertising; and new business development.

5 Page 5 Experience working and thriving in close partnership with an engaged Board of Directors. Experience working with complex budgets, possessing sophisticated financial analytical skills and an interest in evaluation and performance measurement metrics. Ability to generate and deliver clear and persuasive oral and written communications. Ability to inspire trust, to organize people into teams and to motivate team members to work well together.
