1 EN Kapsch TrafficCom V2X. Connected Cars. Improving safety, security, and mobility. V2X combines two elements: communication between vehicles and the infrastructure (V2I, or Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) and communication between vehicles (V2V, or Vehicle-to-Vehicle). Together, those elements form the basis of Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS).

2 What is V2X? V2X enables the exchange of data between vehicles and their environment using wireless communication. Information and warnings are sent and received in real time to support all road users and traffic service centers within their decision-making process. V2X is the abbreviation for vehicle to everything technology and it has been specifically designed for the communication involving vehicles. It is a core solution in the connected vehicles environment, which aims to increase traffic safety and comfort and to reduce the environmental impact of road transportation. Typical V2X use cases in a urban environment. Why V2X? In a world of increasing connectivity, it is a necessity that vehicles and their drivers, road operators, infrastructure, and other road users cooperate. V2X is the logical step to connect these partners as it is exactly tailored to the requirements of communication on the roads. The technology allows dynamic real-time information to increase traffic safety and traffic efficiency. Moreover, payment services, commercial infotainment and the collection of valuable data for environmental purposes are enabled. V2X is the extension to further technological developments in the road transportation sector. As self-driving vehicles enter into the market, V2X is the necessary enhancement for in-vehicle sensor technology. In order to generate a full picture of the vehicles environments and to ensure highest possible safety for vehicle passengers and other road users, in vehicle sensor data is fused with V2X information. 2 Kapsch TrafficCom

3 Benefits of V2X. Enhanced traffic management. Increased safety. The implementation of V2X supports road authorities, road users and provides significant social and environmental benefits. It allows governments to enhance traffic management, optimize the use of infrastructure and increase the maintenance due to a qualitative and quantitative increase of data. Road users benefit as traffic safety increases and efficiency in terms of reduced congestion is gaining. Australian studies of V2X estimate injury reductions to be in the order of 17% to 35% across various injury types. When combined with autonomous auto breaking, a 35% reduction in fatalities and 55% reduction in injuries are possible*. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) even mentions concrete numbers in their report to the United States congress about the V2X technology. Up to 600,000 crashes can be prevented and 1,000 lives can be saved each year after the technology is introduced nationwide**. 4 How does it work? V2X is a standardized two-way dedicated short range communication (DSRC) technology. In general terms it is related to Wi-Fi but operating on 6 channels around the frequency of 5.9GHz. It has efficient ad-hoc network features and is therefore not relying on preexisting infrastructure. Furthermore the communication technology is based on broadcasting messages instead of a point to point communication. This characteristic enables an unlimited number of network partners without any loss of communication quality. The standards for the communication technology are defined in the ETSI ITS G5 for Europe and IEEE WAVE for the United States. On the vehicle side, so called on-board units (OBUs) are the communication devices used. They are the interface between vehicle based data and V2X information. OBUs allow a direct communication between vehicles and additionally enable the communication with roadside infrastructure as variable message signs, road works, traffic signals and similar. For this infrastructure to be able to communicate, it is equipped with roadside units (RSUs). These devices are used in different functionalities. On the one hand, local infrastructural information or information from a traffic management center (TMC) is broadcasted to vehicles. On the other hand, data from vehicles is collected and sent (further processed or raw) to the TMC. Typical V2X use cases in a rural environment. The standardized messages within V2X are packages of the following type: Cooperative Awareness Message (CAM) / Basic Safety Message (BSM): Contains information regarding the presence, vehicle type, as well as basic status data (position,heading, speed). Therefore all V2X equipped vehicles and infrastructure in the surrounding area are aware of present activities. Decentralized Environmental Notification Message (DENM): It is defined to broadcast information of certain events (emergency braking, incident, weather warning ). Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT): Signalized intersections equipped with V2X broadcast information of the current active signal phase in combination with its timing and the following phase within one message package. 4 Kapsch TrafficCom

Kapsch s Vision The approach towards Kapsch s V2X solutions is fully in line with Kapsch s mission and vision. Kapsch has been developing V2X since 2007 in order to exceed customer needs and requirements in terms of user experience, comfortability, efficiency and safety. Within the standardization process of V2X communication, Kapsch has pioneered the development of general standards for Europe (ETSI ITS G5) and for the United States (IEEE WAVE). Today, Kapsch can offer a broad portfolio which includes all soft- and hardware components for the integration of V2X communication. Besides the core hardware elements of V2X, roadside and on-board unit, Kapsch offers complementary products, as advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) and customer fitted software stacks to run V2X applications on roadside and on-board units. Advanced Traffic Management System. An advanced traffic management system (ATMS) is the central unit, within a traffic management center (TMC), to monitor and control traffic on highways, bridges, tunnels and in cities. Traffic sensors, variable message signs, traffic lights and similar are managed with the aim to increase efficiency, improve safety and reduce environmental impact. ATMSs support operators in their day-to-day activities, providing a fully map-based situational awareness of the entire road network. The optimization of safety applications, response plans due to the automatic detection of incidents and the forecast of future traffic conditions, as a decision support tool, are some of the highlights of the software. The highly customizable product is perfectly adapted to the individual needs of customers. Kapsch s ATMS solutions are fully V2X enabled and can therefore receive, process and send information to and from connected V2X roadside units. Kapsch TrafficCom 5

6 Roadside Unit. The V2X roadside unit (RSU) is the communication interface between roadside infrastructure and vehicles. The devices are directly connected to traffic lights, variable speed limits or similar and broadcast relevant information via the 5.9GHz technology. Moreover, RSUs connected to a traffic management center (TMC) via a network connection can pass on information generated in an ATMS. Besides sending, the RSU receives information as CAMs and DENMs which can be further processed locally or directly forwarded to a TMC. Kapsch s latest roadside unit is the MTX-9160 which provides wireless communication for the ETSI ITS G5 and IEEE WAVE standard. It allows todays applications as well as all future applications based on the V2X communication technology to be run on the device. The MTX-9160 provides fast data exchange between vehicles and the TMC to enable full capabilities of cooperative systems. The device is also equipped with local interfaces enabling direct integration with other subsystems as variable message signs and traffic light controllers. The modular architecture of the product allows a customizable solution individually adopted to customer requirements. On-board Unit. The on-board unit (OBU) is the access ticket for vehicles and drivers to participate in the V2X environment. It allows communication between vehicles and V2X equipped infrastructure. OBUs can be integrated to vehicles by car manufacturers (OEM) directly or retrofitted as aftermarket devices. Depending on the chosen integration, on-board sensor data can be fused with V2X information to refine and extend the possibilities of applications. The devices are directly connected to the in-vehicle human machine interface (HMI), a tablet or smartphone. Chosen safety and security related messages and other information is displayed on the screen. Kapsch offers a range of different OBUs, perfectly matched to customer intentions. For evaluation, development and integration of in-vehicle V2X solutions, the EVK-3300 evaluation platform offers perfect characteristics. It provides a flexible set of interfaces to support different in-vehicle architectures and scalability of the key functional blocks. The integrated communication stacks follow the standards for ETSI ITS G5 and IEEE WAVE and are therefore applicable in Europe and the United States. Applications (Software stack). Besides the V2X hardware devices, Kapsch offers individual software developments to fulfill the customer needs in terms of applications. Depending on the dedicated use of a device, different use cases will be of interest. Furthermore, individual software interfaces can be integrated to allow the connection to customer specific infrastructure and in vehicle bus systems. In the following an overview of use cases is given which can be implemented today. As V2X is a rapidly growing technology, the applications are constantly extended and improved 6 Kapsch TrafficCom

7 Use Cases. V2X technology allows already today a great number of applications, however, the current developments in terms of vehicle electrification and automated driving indicate a massive extension in the future. The graphics show different implementations in urban environment and on highways. In-Vehicle-Information (IVI). Multi Modal Information. Intersection Safety (ISS). Road Works Warning (RWW). Public Transport Prioritization. Emergency Vehicle. Emergency Braking. Probe Vehicle Data. Drivers are informed about the presence of speed limits, no passing zones and other relevant safety information which are shown on variable message signs directly inside the vehicles. Drivers are provided with information regarding other transport modalities. In case of congestion public transport routes can be proposed and close by park and ride stations are displayed. Moreover, real-time departure times of trains, metro or busses are displayed as soon as a public transport stop is approached. A visualization inside the vehicles provides drivers with useful information regarding an upcoming intersection. Based on the Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) and MAP message, the optimal speed for the approach towards a signalized intersection can be calculated. Moreover, drivers can be warned in case of a red light violation, either due to oneself or another road user. Drivers approaching a road work zone are informed of its presence, its parameters and associated obstructions as lane closures or speed limits. The main purpose is to alert drivers in time to increase their awareness and warn them about potentially dangerous conditions. V2X offers an adaptive prioritization where public transport vehicles can request an extension of a current green phase to allow a safe crossing of an intersection or even a change of the signal phase. Drivers are warned directly inside their vehicles in case of an approaching emergency vehicle. Additionally, the current position and direction of the vehicle can be shown to allow an optimal reaction of drivers. Cooperative Traffic Signals can receive the signal from an emergency vehicle initiating a signal phase change to enable a safe and uninterrupted ride. An abrupt braking occurrence is broadcasted to warn the following vehicles. Therefore, drivers are not dependent on braking lights but can react before they do have an actual line of sight to the vehicle carrying out an emergency braking. V2X enables the collection of detailed vehicle data without the installation of expensive stationary traffic sensors. Vehicles bypassing V2X roadside units transmit messages that can be received and forwarded to their connected traffic management center (TMC). These CAM/BSM message consist of speed, heading, exact location and other information but without any identity of the vehicle. The gathered information is of great interest in terms of quality and quantity and exceeds the capabilities of today s stationary traffic sensors by far. TMCs can aggregate the data and drastically improve the situational traffic awareness. From a TMC s perspective, V2X equipped vehicles can be seen mobile traffic sensors delivering rich data while constantly moving across the network.
