These include, but are not limited to: introduction to the nursing profession and its responsibilities, the health care team, the nursing process, legal and ethical issues in nursing practice, and nursing regulation. Concepts related to the physical, emotional, and psychosocial selfcare of the learner/professional are included. The course also provides an introduction to nursing history and development of vocational/practical nursing.

2 Course Objectives: A. Member of the Profession 1. The student shall demonstrate responsibility and accountability for the quality of nursing care provided by becoming familiar with the Texas BON standards of practice, national standards of vocational nursing practice and the NFLPN code of ethics for the licensed vocational nurse, and the nurse s legal scope of nursing practice affecting the delivery of client care as referenced to Member of the Profession Competencies A & B and SCANS #5. 2. The student shall demonstrate behaviors that promote the development and practice of vocational nursing by examining the historical evolution of nursing practice as it relates to the current role of the licensed vocational/practical nurse as referenced to Member of the Profession Competency C and SCANS #5. 3. The student shall describe the DEC Competencies (2010) along with their role in the practice of the licensed vocational nurse as referenced to Member of the Profession Competency D and SCANS #5.. B. Provider of Patient-Centered Care 1. The student shall use critical thinking and established evidence-based policies to provide safe and therapeutic nursing interventions using a systematic problem- solving approach as referenced to Provider of Patient- Centered Care Competency A and SCANS #5. 2. The student shall assist in determining the physical and mental health status and health needs of culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse patients based on interpretation of health-related data using steps of a systematic process and focused nursing assessment as referenced to Provider of Patient-Centered Care Competency B and SCANS #5. C. Patient Safety Advocate 1. The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, Texas BON rules, and all federal, state, and local government and accreditation organization requirements that emphasizes safety as referenced to Patient Safety Advocate Competency A and SCANS #5. 2. The student shall implement measures to promote a safe environment for patients and others as referenced to Patient Safety Advocate Competency B and SCANS #5 D. Member of the Health Care Team 1. The student shall cooperate and use therapeutic communication with patients, their families, and the inter-disciplinary health care team to provide direct patient-centered care to assigned patients as referenced to Member of the Health Care Team Competency A and SCANS #5. 2. The student shall participate as an advocate in activities that focus on improving the health care of patients and their families as referenced to Member of the Health Care Team Competency B and SCANS #5. 2

Foundations of nursing, 6 th ed. St. Louis: Mosby-Elsevier. Methods of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, power point, turning point, Eagle online LMS, and case studies Methods and Standards of Evaluation: Grading Policy: The grade for this course is comprised of three components: 1) Unit exams 2) Quizzes 3) Final Exam. Unit Examinations (3) -20% each 60% Quizzes (2) 10% Final Exam (1) 30% 100% Grading Systems: See Vocational Nursing Handbook Evaluation Methods: Exams are administered online. 1. Three (3) multiple choice and alternate form question unit examinations -50 questions each per one (1) hour exam 2. A comprehensive final examination -100 multiple choice and alternate forms questions, two hours will be provided for the final. If you are late to any exam, you must complete the exam within the class time allocated for the exam. You will not have additional time in which to complete the exam. See Vocational Nursing Handbook, p. 25 for Additional grading information. 3

4 Examination Guides: On the day of the scheduled examination, leave all books, backpacks, cellphones, and roller carts in assigned locker or car. DO NOT BRING ITEMS TO THE COMPUTER LAB or TESTING ROOM. Make-up Policy: Any regularly scheduled course exam will not be made up. If the student must be absent on the day an exam is given then a grade of 50% will be given. EGLS 3 -- Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston Community College Student System online near the end of the term. Attendance and Withdrawal Policy: You MUST visit with a faculty advisor, a counselor, or on-line student services at prior to withdrawing (dropping) the class and this must be done prior to March 30, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. to receive a W on your transcript. After that deadline, you will receive a failing grade of F. See HCC Vocational Nursing Student Handbook, p. 24 for attendance policies; p. 49 for withdrawal policies. SCAN Competency: The VNSG 1122 course covers one SCAN Workplace Competency. Use Information Skills #5 Acquire Information SCAN Objective: Upon successful completion of VNSG 1122 the student shall be able to examine information from various sources, evaluate the relevance of that information to solving problems and answering questions, and apply the knowledge acquired to his/her future job performance. The student shall accomplish the desired outcome by correctly answering examination questions that require application of that information and by solving problems related to everyday life situations and specific clinical situations using the nursing process and critical thinking principles.
