Christine Nguy Travel Report 2013 Introduction to Modern China, Fudan University, Nordic Centre 8-26 July, 2013 Travel Report By Christine Nguy Master in Bioentrepreneurship, KI Globalization has brought a strong international perspective of economic and political affairs. China is today one of the biggest economies in the world and has been growing fast the past decades. The Nordic Centre in collaboration with Fudan University offers a summer course entitled Introduction to Modern China, which is an excellent opportunity for students who are keen on getting an insight of the Chinese economic and political system through a real immersion into the country itself. The Nordic Centre located in Shanghai, welcomes for this summer course students from member universities and institutions from the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is one of the members; therefore gives the chance to three of its students to participate to this 3-week course. The course is structure into two tracks: Economics and Politics, within a very diverse group of Nordic students from other prestigious Scandinavian universities, namely The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm University, Lund University, Norwegian School of Economics, Copenhagen Business School, and many others. 3 1. Pre-departure This summer course was a fantastic opportunity to get some knowledge about China, experience the culture and meet interesting and inspiring people. I am from the Bioentrepreneurship Master programme at KI and this course fits perfectly the economic and business aspects of my education. I was motivated and enthusiastic to be part of this adventure. First, the application process goes through Karolinska Institutet who is responsible to nominate the students (three candidates and three possible reserve candidates). The Nordic Centre will then make the final decision and send out the confirmation to the admitted students. Soon after the results the Nordic Centre will send out information regarding the course, the accommodation possibilities, the reading list, the insurance and the visa. Besides, all participants were invited to a Facebook group where questions and first contacts with the other students could be made. I was selected with one of my classmate from the Bioentrepreneurship Master at KI. Once you have confirmed your attendance to the Nordic Centre for the summer course, you should: 1. Travel plan Make yourself a travel plan with dates you want to arrive and go back and think about any extra traveling you might want to do while being in Asia. Then you will be able to look for plane tickets. Few people arrived one week before the course and traveled through China before joining Shanghai, more people stayed longer after the course to travel around China. From what I experienced it is better to travel after the course with some other participants, so think about an extra week after the course to go around. Initiate contact through the Facebook group and try to start planning as soon as possible. I chose to arrive four days before the course to be able to recover properly from the jetlag and to leave the Monday after the course ends. Please note that to get your visa you will need both flights and accommodation set. 2. Flights You need your flight information to apply for a Chinese visa, so start here. Flight tickets are cheaper if bought early, around SEK if you are lucky. Therefore, as soon as you confirm your attendance and know your travel plans, check immediately flight tickets. Most of the students flew with with Finnair or SAS. Have a look to flight going from Beijing as well if you plan to visit the Chinese capital, flights can be cheaper from Beijing, then the connection between Shanghai and Beijing can be done by fast trains (5 hours) and cost roughly 500 SEK one-way. There are two international airports in Shanghai, Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport, so check both, but most flights go to Pudong Airport. I booked my flights on the 18 th of April that costs me 6523 SEK return ticket Stockholm Arlanda - Shanghai Pudong departure 03/7/2013, return 29/7/2013. By the mean of the Facebook group, some students arranged themselves to meet at Copenhagen Airport and flew together to Shanghai. 3. Accommodation The Nordic Centre has reserved rooms for all the students of the summer course at Tohee International Student Village. Most of the students chose to stay at Tohee (55 out of 60 3

students). One single room costs 120 yuan per night (1 SEK = 0.94 yuan), but if you decide to share a double room, it will be 85 yuan per night. It is located around 2-minute walk away from Fudan Campus and 15-minute walk to the Nordic Centre. The location is convenient as there are lots of restaurants in its surroundings, supermarkets and grocery stores. Moreover, there is a bus stop in front of the entrance and a subway station 15- minute walk away. The rooms are part of 3-bedroom apartments with one bathroom and one kitchen shared by the apartment occupants. Internet access is free in the Tohee reception lobby, otherwise it costs 85 yuan to get the Internet cable for your room. The rooms were very simply furnished, one bed (linens included), one desk and one closet, but the standards were very different from one room to another. I chose to share a double room with one of my classmate (there will be a form to fill up with what kind of room you want and if applicable with who you want to share it with). Where some of our classmates had very clean and acceptable apartments, we were unlucky and very disappointed by our room and by our apartment at Tohee. In fact, it was the smallest room of the apartment, without any desk, just two big beds put next to each other, which were taking all the space in the room. Some students with single rooms had bigger rooms than our so-called double room. The room itself was not clean, neither was the kitchen nor the bathroom when we arrived. The reception did not have any other room available to switch with, so we had to get used to it. They at least accepted to send some cleaners. Even though I may sound quite negative here, I strongly recommend staying at Tohee. The standards might not be the ones you are expecting but the good point about Tohee is that everyone of the class is staying there so it is easier to meet up and to socialize. Besides, it is a good location (20 minutes away by taxi to the city center) and it is the closest you can have to the Nordic Centre. 4. Visa application Visit the Chinese Embassy s website to find out information about the application process ( As the main visit of my trip to China was to study at the summer course, I applied for a Business Visa, which is the visa you should have for short-term study. Ask the Nordic Centre to provide you with a Business Invitation Letter, they will put up a document for your application. Gather all the documents required and visit their Swedish office by Karlavägen 108. It is recommended to start the application roughly one month before departure and it does not take longer than one week to get it. I requested a Business Visa, with one single entry (if you want to go to Hong-Kong, you are leaving Chinese mainland so you need at least double entries). As I am a French citizen, I had to provide more documents than a Swedish citizen does, and it costs me a bit more as well: 625 SEK (instead of 595 SEK for a Swedish citizen). Around the beginning of July, the Nordic Centre sent out information regarding how to get to Tohee from the airport and some useful information about living in Shanghai. The Nordic Centre is very helpful and answers quite fast, so do not hesitate to them during the process. 4

2. Arrival Arriving in China My classmate and myself arrived on Thursday 4 th of July to have some time to heal from the jetlag and walk around Tohee and the city before starting the course on Monday the 8 th. Many of our classmates chose to arrive two days before the start of the course, which was fine as well. From the airport to Tohee, take the taxi at the taxi station outside the Arrival hall and avoid all the pirate taxis on the way who will overcharge you for the trip. Be very careful they are many of them waiting at the Arrival door and they are very talented to trick you into following them. Walk away and take taxis at the station only! The taxi driver should always have a light on at the top and turn on his meter on when he starts driving so you pay the right price. Many got fooled the first day when they arrived, a range of different prices were asked for a taxi trip from the airport to Tohee (from 175 yuan normal price without traffic, to 500 yuan which is extremely overcharged!) The Nordic Centre provided Tohee s address written in Chinese characters to show to the taxi driver, which ease the communication, as most taxi drivers do not speak English. Picture 2. Taxi print-out to Tohee Meeting the class I deeply believe that the best experiences are made from the people you meet. The class was composed of brilliant students from across Scandinavia. The big majority this year was Swedish, followed by Norwegians, then Finnish and Danish. The diversity in their background, from engineer students to business school students, stopping by the political science students, as well as the uniqueness of their personalities created the whole experience. As different points of view and opinions enriched debates and conversations during classes, different habits and approaches of China contributed to my own experience of China. During the first day, the course director gave all the information regarding the course, some essentials to know about Shanghai and some tips to stay out of trouble. She introduced the Economics and Politics track supervisors, as well as the Chinese student assistants. The day ended with a welcome dinner where we were introduced to some delicious Chinese cuisine and got the chance to mingle. Internet in China In China, there are very strict Internet policies as you may know. The Great Firewall blocks some websites that we use everyday here, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube (Google is limited), etc. Many universities have a VPN (virtual private network) for their students that enables you to get the access you want. Same for the smartphones, some VPN can be downloaded as application. 5

3. Financing Before leaving to China, I recommend you to get a bit of cash out so you will be able to pay for the taxi when you arrive at the airport, for your room at Tohee (as they only accept cash, but they have an ATM by the reception) and your first expenses. I exchanged some SEK into Yuan at Arlanda so I had with me 5000 yuan. Make sure before departure that you can withdraw money with your bankcard in China, two Swedish students got a bit in trouble as their cards did not work at the ATM and they had to borrow from other students until they could fix the issue with their bank. So in order to avoid any unnecessary calling fees to your bank, check with your bank before departure. Cost of living Shanghai is a city with extreme contrasts when it comes to the cost of living. Especially when it comes to eating, you will be able to have a great meal for 20 yuan in a local restaurant, where it will cost you around 200 yuan in a fancy restaurant. Local restaurants served absolutely fine meals and there are plenty around the campus area and Tohee. In areas by the city center such as Pudong or Nanjing Road, the restaurants will charge a bit higher. Same logic goes for bars. Cafés such as Starbucks will charge a price close to the European standards, yuan for a blended-ice coffee. Transportation is quite cheap in Shanghai and easy to accommodate with: either you buy a transportation card that costs 20 yuan and top it up with money, either you buy single tickets: - For a bus ride: 2 yuan (paid on the bus, in coins only) - For the subway: depending on the zone you are crossing, it costs from 2 yuan to 4 yuan - For a taxi ride: the starting fee is 14 yuan (18 yuan during the night), and it costs around 50 yuan to reach the city center from Tohee. It is the most convenient mean of transportation and it remains relatively cheap, even cheaper if you share it with some classmates. Shopping and nightlife are affordable to our European budgets. To keep the costs down, I recommend eating in local restaurants, where you can find authentic, delicious and very cheap meals. Street food is even cheaper and as delicious but be aware of the very low hygiene standards that could upset your stomach. Regarding mobile phones, you can purchase a Chinese sim card with a Chinese phone number including or not 3G, you will then have to top it up with money and this will lower your phone bill as it can be quite expensive to use a Swedish phone in China. A tip would be to bring an old phone, as in many cases your current smartphone is locked to your current mobile phone company. 4. Studies - in general As mentioned before, the course is divided into two distinct tracks: Economics and Politics with some common lectures. Lectures were scheduled from 10:00 to 16:00, five days per week and were held by both Nordic and Chinese teachers. The lectures gave a good understanding of the transition of the Ancient China into the Modern system. Topics such as historical events, economic changes, political reforms, and internationalization were discussed within different lectures. Lecturers were enthusiastic and in general the quality was very high. Questions and comments were highly appreciated. One of the lecture I could mention as my 6

favorite, was one about how a Nordic company implemented their business in China, the way they had to adapt to the Chinese market and the changes they had to implement in their business strategy. It was interesting to have a concrete story of the challenges they faced when entering the Chinese market, how it was different from penetrating another Western market. To my great pleasure, the company was a Danish medical device company, which fit perfectly my interest as a KI student. To prepare yourself to each track, a reading list is sent out by the track supervisors in late May. With our university library access, most of the publications are accessible. I advise you to download them before departure, as many Internet webpages are blocked in China. I was part of the Economics track. This track included lectures and seminars focused on the economic aspects of the Chinese society. During seminars we had the opportunity to discuss in small groups, and participate within a group project. The group project was to define a business idea and design a business plan to enter the Chinese market with a presentation to the class at the end of the course. It was a rich experience to be able to work with students from different background, as they would have different approaches and inputs to the project. There is also an essay to write and to be hand in after the course on a topic of your choice. The supervisor of the track will give you advices on how to shape your topic and the way to write it. The requirements to pass the course are: - 80 percent attendance to the lectures - A pass on your essay Note that this course does not give you any extra credits at KI. 5. Language and culture Language - The whole course was taught in English and everyone in the class stuck to English for optimum communication. The Chinese teachers had very good English as many of them had undergone either studies or work in the U.S or in Europe. Regarding the interaction with the Chinese population, in Shanghai, there are different types of area, from the most Westernized districts where almost all restaurant and shop staff could easily interact with you in English to some areas where the people do not speak a word of English. In general, it is suitable to say that Chinese people do not speak English, so sometimes it can be difficult to communicate. One tip I can give you is to download on your phone a Chinese dictionary, it could be very useful sometimes (for example: to make the waiter understand that you would like a fork or a tissue). Unfortunately, the course does not include Chinese language classes, but it included a session with one of the Chinese student assistant on practical Chinese entitled How to buy tickets, haggle and order food in order for us to get some very basic words (Example: bu la means not spicy, which turned out to be the most useful sentence I have learnt as I cannot eat spicy food). Culture Chinese culture is very different and unique. Therefore there will be times when you may find some situations awkward as Chinese people can behave or react in ways you would not expect. You have to experience it with an open-mind and be aware that the 7

standards and the way in doing things can be very different to how you would do as a European. As examples I can mention: - High valuation of education Chinese students are extremely hard-workers and carry on their shoulders heavy family pressures to succeed in their studies - The culture of face, Chinese people hate losing face, they value their reputation and like to be respected by others, they will try to avoid any situations where they may lose face - Spitting - Babies without diapers - Very crowded places, no personal space, especially when you are queuing for something, some people may stand too close to you - Curiosity, Chinese people could stare at you in the street as a matter of curiosity and interest What I can advise is to stay as open-minded as possible and do not take too personal what could happen. Moreover, through this experience I had also the chance to discover the different Nordic cultures. They were fascinating to learn about as I could interact with Southern/Northern Swedes, Norwegians, Danish and Finnish. I had the good surprise that their cultures are quite different even though they share some common aspects. 6. Leisure time Even though there is class nearly everyday, you still have time after class and during weekends to go out and explore Shanghai and its surroundings. The class is composed of students eager to visit the city as much as you are, team up according to affinities and go explore! Class activities - As part of the schedule, the Nordic Centre has arranged few activities (optional but strongly recommended): we had a visit at the Shanghai Museum, a karaoke night, a visit to the Nordic consulates, an event to meet and mingle with Chinese students, an excursion to Zhujiajiao Water Town and a movie screening session. Exploring the city - When it comes to leisure, Shanghai is not a city where you can get bored. The city is filled with places to visit and activities to do: - Museums - Shopping malls close to Tohee you will find Wujiaochang shopping mall next to the subway station with a big supermarket. The city center is filled with many places to shop, namely Nanjing East Road. - Markets Remember that in markets you can always bargain the price, if you are good at it you may get very cheap prices. Be aware that the starting price is always unrealistic. One popular market to be mentioned is the tailor market where a lot of students went to have tailored made suits at very good prices. - Tourist attractions The Bund, Shanghai World Financial Center, the Pearl Tower, Tianzifang, the French Concession, Yuyuan Garden - Restaurants - Bars and nightclubs It is a restless city where you can do everything no matter the day of the week. 8

Sports The campus offers several sport activities, namely basketball and badminton, as well as a swimming pool. Traveling During the weekend, a lot of students chose to travel around Shanghai to cities such as Hanzhou, Suzhou, or Huangshan. Those cities are close by, and are reachable through trains or buses. As one Friday was free, with some other classmates, we took the opportunity to go to Beijing, to visit the Forbidden City, climb the Great Wall and try the famous Peking Duck. It is a 5-hour trip by fast-train. We book our fast-train tickets through a ticket office nearby the campus, which cost around 1000 yuan (around 500 yuan each way). Beijing is very different to Shanghai, and it is definitely worth the trip. 7. Conclusion Take home message and tips You may have some expectations or beliefs about how Shanghai and China are, but you have to live it to understand it. Here are some few tips I consider useful to know in order to have the most pleasant stay in Shanghai and being out of trouble: - Never trust anyone approaching you randomly, you may get scammed or robbed. In fact, pirate taxis will present themselves as real taxi drivers or airport staff, swearing they are not fake (even showing some kind of fake identifications sometimes), walk away from them as they will either overcharge you or rob you. Other people may approach you in the street with perfect English and ask you to go to some teahouses where they will force you to pay very pricy bills. So walk away! - In a city like Shanghai, it is not recommended to go out by yourself, pick people within the class to hang out with, even though the city is quite safe, you will feel more comfortable. - Always have with you a card/a photo with the address in Chinese characters of the place you stay at, so you will be able to reach home whenever and wherever you are with a taxi ride. - When there are no prices displayed, always bargain the price down! Personal reflection From the knowledge you gain to the people you meet, I can definitely say that this experience is worth the detour and I would strongly recommend it to every student. As a student, this summer course in Shanghai cleared my perception of China. It is very difficult to understand the Chinese system without experiencing it in person. It is a country rich of surprises as we liked to say it in China, expect the unexpected. Thanks to the course I understood some important aspects of the Chinese market and the current trend towards the growing middle class. I believe this course have opened up my way of thinking and showed me that the Chinese market requires a different approach when it comes to business. This experience will be valuable for my future professional career as many pharmaceutical companies are willing to enter the Chinese market and they will look for people with knowledge about how to do business in or with China. Therefore, I believe this is an excellent first step. Personally, this summer course has been an incredible human experience and a unique 9

opportunity to extend my personal network. By sharing those special memories and experiences, I have made myself some very good friends from all over Scandinavia and will sure keep contact with them. I hope that you will find this report useful and feel through it the envy to try it yourself. 10
