Solution Overview Terminology It is important to understand certain key terms related to this solution. Table 2 provides definitions of the terms used in this document. Table 2 Definition of terms Term AVM Data Mover Microsoft SQL Server 2005 MOSS 2007 WSSDW NDMP NDMP Backup-to-Disk (NDMPB2D) MOSS farm or SharePoint farm Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS) Definition Automatic Volume Management. A feature of the Celerra Network Server that creates and manages volumes automatically. A Celerra Network Server cabinet component running the data access in real time (DART) operating system. A database application from Microsoft that stores the data for MOSS Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is a component of the Microsoft Office server suite. MOSS is built on top of WSS and adds more functionality to it, including better document management, enterprise search functionality, navigation features, RSS support, as well as features from Microsoft Content Management Server. It also includes features for business data analysis such as Excel Services and the Business Data Catalog. SharePoint Test Data Load Tool (WSSDW.exe) is a tool that helps data population for WSS Server and MOSS Server. Network Data Management Protocol. An open standard network protocol designed for enterprise-wide backup and recovery of heterogeneous network attached storage. A software-based virtual tape library configured on a Data Mover that emulates a real TLU, and allows NDMP backup-to-disk functionality. (This feature is sometimes referred to as a virtual tape library unit, or VTLU.) A collection of one or more SharePoint servers and one or more SQL servers that come together to provide a set of basic SharePoint services bound together by a single Configuration Database in SQL Server. A cluster is a group of computers called nodes that function as a single computer/system to provide high availability and high fault tolerance for applications and services. If one member node of the cluster is unavailable, the other computers carry the load so that applications or services are always (with a small interruption) available. 16 MOSS Store Solution Solution architecture Figure 1 shows the solution architecture of the MOSS 2007 on VMware ESX Server solution for EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS. The solution is currently made up of the store and backup module. These modules include the following common components: Storage network SharePoint Server, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Web Server, Index Server, NetWorker Server and the Active Directory Server connected to the management, client, and storage networks for Network File Services Figure 1 Architecture of the solution 16 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS

MOSS Store Solution General characteristics The solution architecture has the following general characteristics: MOSS 2007, SQL Server 2005, Web Server, Index Server, EMC NetWorker 7.4 Server and the Active Directory/Global Catalog Server all reside on separate VMware virtual machines. IP (Gigabit Ethernet and virtual local area network (VLAN)) connections are designed to balance or distribute disk I/O. All database files are stored on the EMC Celerra NS40 storage system, which makes server replacement relatively simple. MOSS 2007 Enterprise Edition SP2 (64-bit), and Active Directory/Global Catalog Server run on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition 64-bit R2 SP2, which in turn runs on VMware ESX Server 3.5. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 (64-bit) runs on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition 64-bit R2 SP2, which in turn runs on a single VMware ESX Server 3.5. The SharePoint Web Server, Index Server, and EMC NetWorker 7.4 run on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition 64-bit R2 SP2, which in turn runs on a single VMware ESX Server 3.5. The EMC Celerra NS40 system provides network file services for all the servers in the farm, except for the NetWorker Server, which resides on the host ESX Server. The backup destination is a file system on the same Celerra NS40 that is configured with the Virtual Tape Library Unit. Storage architecture In this solution, users can perform storage setup using the Celerra Manager software. The software provides the ability to see every disk, design file systems, and create NFS exports to support specific I/O demands. The storage architecture tested is described in Figure 2: Figure 2 Storage architecture overview Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS 17

MOSS Store Solution Table 3 ESX Servers and Celerra Storage ESX Server Virtual machine ESX data store Celerra NFS Storage ESX 1 Three Unused Application Server guest OS and Application Server binary files Web Server guest OS and binary files Domain controller guest OS and AD binary files ESX2 One Unused SQL Server guest OS, SQL Server binary files, SQL database files, SQL log files, and tempdb ESX3 Two NetWorker Server guest OS and NetWorker Server files Index Server guest OS and Content Index files The solution is designed for ease of use and ease of management with acceptable performance. The configuration is ideal for environments with moderate performance requirements. In this configuration, three ESX servers host the MOSS farm. The entire farm, including the VMware guest operating systems, the binary files of the servers in the farm, the SQL databases, SQL Logs and the tempdb, all resides on the same disk spindles. The NetWorker Server guest operating system and NetWorker Server files reside on a separate ESX Server datastore, as shown in Table 3. Figure 3 Disk layout Note: As a best practice, Microsoft recommends that a database and its logs reside on separate spindles for resiliency. This configuration violates this best practice in order to provide simple mechanisms for backup and disaster recovery as noted later in this document. 18 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS

MOSS Store Solution File system The file system is created using the Automatic Volume Management (AVM) system-defined storage pool clar_r1. The VMware guest OS of the Application Server, Web Server, Active Directory, Index Server, and the SQL Server, along with the SQL database, SQL Logs, and SQL tempdb, are stored in this file system. NFS export This file system is exported via NFS. This NFS export is configured as a NFS datastore on the ESX servers. Network architecture Switches Virtual local area networks This section describes the network architecture of the validated solution. EMC recommends that the switches support Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connections and that the ports on the switches support copper-based media. In this configuration the VMware virtual switches are set to connect physical network cards directly to their logical equivalent in the virtual machine. This validated solution uses VLANs to segregate network traffic of different types to improve throughput, manageability, application separation, high availability, and security. Figure 1 on page 16 shows five VLANs: A client VLAN network supports connectivity between the MOSS farm servers and the client workstations. Three storage VLANs provide connectivity between the three ESX servers and the storage. The three ESX servers are connected to the storage VLANs and each ESX server has one network interface card (NIC) dedicated to a separate storage VLAN. The backup network has its own VLAN to provide dedicated connectivity between the NetWorker Server and the Celerra NS40 storage system. EMC Celerra NS40 The EMC Celerra NS40 contains two Data Movers. The Data Movers can operate independently, or they can operate in active/passive mode, with the passive Data Mover serving as a failover device for the active Data Mover. In this solution, the Data Movers operate in active/passive mode. The NS40 Data Mover has four network ports. Figure 4 illustrates the ports on the rear of an EMC Celerra NS40 Data Mover. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS 19

MOSS Store Solution Figure 4 EMC Celerra NS40 Data Mover ports Ports cge0, cge1, and cge2 maintain the storage traffic. Port cge3 handles the traffic of backup data. Ports cge0, cge1, cge2 and cge3 were connected to the storage network using virtual interfaces and are connected to the network switches as shown in Figure 4. Note: As a best practice, the Data Mover network ports connected to the storage network (as shown in figure 4) should be dedicated to storage traffic. However, if the ports are not heavily used, they can be shared with non-storage network traffic. EMC recommends monitoring the network to avoid bottlenecks. ESX Server architecture This section describes the ESX Server architecture. The physical server running VMware ESX Server that hosts the Application Server, Web Server and the Domain Controller has six network interfaces. One interface is connected to the management VLAN, two are connected to the client VLANs, and one is connected to the storage VLAN. The fifth and sixth interfaces are unused. 22 MOSS Store Solution MOSS 2007 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 architecture The topology tested is a medium server farm, which consists of an application server, web server, and index server running Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Internet Information Services (IIS). Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is the database server on which the SharePoint objects reside. Installing SharePoint Server 2007 automatically creates the necessary databases on the SQL Server. In this configuration, the application server and web server provide web contents to the clients. The application server role provides Office SharePoint Server 2007 services. The index server role provides the services of search queries, crawling, and indexing content. In this configuration, the VMware guest OS of all the servers in the farm, SQL database, SQL logs, and SQL tempdb all reside in the same Celerra file system. This file system is created across four RAID 1, two-disk storage pools. The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 binary files, the database files, database log files, tempdb files, and other system database files reside on EMC Celerra NS40 file systems. High availability and failover The validated solution provides protection at the storage layer, the connectivity layer, and the host layer. Storage layer The Celerra can have multiple Data Movers to provide high availability and load balancing. In the MOSS 2007 NS Series solution, the primary and standby Data Movers provide seamless failover capabilities for the Celerra storage. This minimizes end-user disruption during routine Celerra maintenance, such as upgrading the DART operating system (OS). The RAID disk configuration on the Celerra back end provides protection against hard disk failures. Connectivity layer The advanced networking features of the Celerra, such as Fail-Safe Networks and link aggregation, provide protection against network connection failures. The solution configuration also includes separate NICs at the source of each I/O path, a separate network infrastructure (cables, switches, routers, and so on), and separate target ports. Host layer The application hosts have redundant power supplies and network connections to reduce the impact of host hardware failure. Virtual Host layer Several native VMware features (that are beyond the scope of this document) protect the virtual host. Note: When VMware supports MSCS clusters of 64-bit guest operating systems, users can use MSCS clustering at the Virtual Host layer to further increase the availability of the system. Alternatively, the system can be implemented as a 32-bit operating system, although there are additional performance implications that are beyond the scope addressed in this document. 22 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS

Chapter 3 MOSS Backup Solution This chapter presents these topics: Backup architecture Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS 23

MOSS Backup Solution Backup architecture The backup solution allows users to back up the SharePoint environment. In the validated solutions, NetWorker 7.4 is used to back up the entire SharePoint farm. In this configuration, the Celerra NDMP was used with EMC NetWorker to create a fully encapsulated backup of the whole system that is recoverable to a specific point in time. Since the entire SharePoint farm, including the database files, resides on a single NFS file system, EMC NetWorker can use Celerra SnapSure to create a point-in-time view of the file system and then create a backup using that view. When this backup is restored, the operating system will be able to boot normally. The SQL database recovery will bring the database online. The destination for the backup was on the Celerra NDMPB2D created from the file system that uses the ATA spindles. 24 Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 on VMware ESX Server EMC Celerra NS Series over NFS
