1 Glenn Dorsam, Ph.D. Syllabus for Basic Immunology 490/690 Spring 2014 Instructor: Associate professor Glenn Dorsam, 320 IACC, , Number of Credits: Three (3) Course Objectives: This course will focus on the immune response to microbes. The course topics to be covered will follow sequentially the chapters in the textbook for simplicity. These topics will include innate and adaptive immunity, antigen capture and recognition, cell mediated versus humor immune reactions, immunological tolerance, autoimmunity, anticancer effects by the immune system, hypersensitivity, and immunodeficiencies. Office Hours: Office 320 IACC; Lab-310/314/354. Tuesdays and Thursdays 11-1PM or by appointment. Class Hours: MWF 1-1:50 PM 103 Morrill Hall Text: Basic Immunology, Functions and Disorders of the Immune System, Third Edition or updated edition. The text is required for the course. Grade Determination 1 syllabus 5 points, Extra Credit Quizzes 25 points each; 8 total 200 Exams 100 points each, 3 total 300 Cumulative final 200 points each, 1 total Total Points 700 Your final grade (%) will be equal to: (Total Points EARNED divided by 700)*100.: Class Scale: A 90% or 630 points, B 80% or 560 points, C 70% or 490 points, D 60% or 420 points and lower than 60% or 420 points is a failing grade of F. Grades can be curved but only to favor students. Quizzes: Will be open book and posted on Black Board. The purpose of the quizzes is to help you practice the new vocabulary words. I will generate

2 a cross word puzzle and post on BlackBoard. You will have about two days to finish cross word puzzle. They will not be collected. The quiz will follow about two days later and I will give students at least two days to finish quiz posted on BlackBoard. To ensure focused studying, I will only allow two chances to take the quiz with the most recent quiz as your final grade. I expect most students to ace these quizzes! Exams: True/False, Matching, Multiple Choice, Problem Solving (Multiple Choice) 100 total points. 70 points will be the basics (if you studied this should be straight-forward). 30 points will be applied problem solving (Challenging). 50 minute time limit, no exceptions unless prior approval by me. Immediately, fill out your Opti-scan when you arrive for an exam. Please supply your own OPTI-Scan PLEASE place your LAST NAME FIRST, first name last on the opti-scan. Have adjacent neighbors sign your exam on the appropriate corner. I will write on the board the time remaining: 40, 20 and 5 minutes remaining. Students with pre-approved documented official absences will be allowed to make up a missed exam as soon as possible after the excused absence (not earlier) Pre-approved documented official absences mean that you have discussed this absence with me prior to the exam and have supplied suitable documentation (school related or health related). Missing an exam due to an unexcused absence can also be made up, but only once. This exam make-up will be on the last Friday of the semester, May 8 th at 7AM and will be an oral exam. Calculators will not be allowed; only the exam, opti-scan, blank paper and a pencil are allowed out on the desk during an exam. Failure to meet these guidelines may result in a zero on the exam. Exam answer keys will be posted on blackboard after all exams are corrected. You have one week to question an exam score, from the date the final key is posted to BlackBoard. All exam scores are final. If you have eraser marks on your scantron sheet then it might be marked wrong. It is your responsibility to pass in a legible scantron. Exams will be graded after the exam has been discussed in class. Students will have one week to discuss their grades with me in person during office hours or prearranged time. There will be NO regarding of exams within one week of the exam, or two weeks after official key has been posted. Cumulative Final: This exam will be in the same format as all previous exams o All above stipulations for exams also count for the cumulative final exam 2

3 Miscellaneous: There will be no extra credit possibilities other than those stipulated on the syllabus. Please do not ask for a higher letter grade if you did not earn that letter grade. To be ethical and fair, my answer will be no. A grade of repeating is a B!!! If you think your exam was graded incorrectly, I will be happy to re-grade the entire exam during my office hours. Realize that the newly graded exam will be your official score even if it turns out to be lower than what your originally had. Expectations for the Professor I will: 1) Arrive on time for all lectures 2) Describe each lecture s objective. 3) Try to review several times per class. 4) Use as many sources as possible to teach the most up to date information. 5) Do my best to answer questions. a. If I do not know the answer, I will attempt to find the answer in a timely manner. I will not pretend to know an answer. I will state that clearly to you but will offer an educated guess. 6) I will be present for all office hours. Look for me on 3 rd floor IACC 320, 310, 314, 316, 336 and 354. a. Please do not show up unannounced at my office/lab during non-office hours. I may not be able to answer questions due to assisting my laboratory students (10 people in my lab). 7) I will lecture on subject matter outlined in the syllabus and discussed in Abbas/Lichtman, third edition. 8) I have your best interests in mind; therefore I have very high standards!! 9) I will grade your performance in this class based on how many points you have earned. 10) I will call on students to answer questions in class so please be prepared for that possibility. 11) If I have reason to believe you are cheating and collect the appropriate evidence, you will fail the entire course; even the impression of cheating must be documented. During exams you should only be looking at your exam. Expectations for Students 1) Be present for all lectures: a. If you miss class, extra credit notes will not be accepted late or early, unless previously discussed with me. b. It is your responsibility to copy notes from a peer. 3

4 2) You may need to show your student ID when you turn in an assignment/exam/quiz a. Do not hand in any assignments for another peer, only your own. This would give the impression of cheating and you may fail the entire course (see above). 3) Study a minimum of 2 hours outside of class for every credit hour; e.g. 8 hours for BIOC 461 every week. a. Read the text assignment for that lecture prior to coming to class. b. Take good notes during class. c. Ask questions during class. d. Participate in class. e. Review last semester s material, it s your responsibility to have retained that information. f. Review previous course material (e.g. chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and cell biology), it s your responsibility to understand the material. g. Re-read text, review notes daily etc. 4) Take responsibility for your actions: a. Please do not blame other people for your grade. b. I will grade you on your performance in this course i.e. your grade is what you earned. c. I am simply showing you the way, 90% of learning takes place OUTSIDE of the lecture room!! d. Read the textbook several times. Study all vocabulary words (bold-face words in text). Understand the topics and recreate them without aid from the text. Complete all questions in the back of the chapter. Change the parameters of the questions and redo the question. Re-define vocabulary words in your own words. Organize a study group. Review class notes incessantly. Take notes from the textbook, use the internet to read more on a subject. If you have specific questions regarding a topic sign-up for office hours to discuss with me. When you have done the above, do it again!!! I will be happy to answer questions on material that you do not understand, but I will not re-lecture. e. Do not fall into the trap that being in class everyday, taking notes and memorizing these notes will suffice. 5) If you must miss an exam, then please see me well in advance with appropriate documentation (see above) 6) If you miss an exam without documentation (e.g. my alarm clock didn t go off), I will allow you to make-up one and only one exam. This exam will be at 7 am on Friday, May 7 TH and will be an oral exam. Additional absences during exams will result in a zero for that exam grade. 7) PLEASE, no continued talking or whispering in class or I will ask you to leave. 8) PLEASE, no cell phones on during class, or at least place on vibrate and leave the lecture hall to respond. 9) If you come in late or must leave early, please be courteous to your peers and do so in a very quiet manner. 4

5 10) It is your responsibility to report unscrupulous behavior by your peers. a. If anyone is cheating, please make it known it me!! b. Students at many institutions such as the University of Virginia take exams without professors present!! 11) You are welcome to copy notes from a friend if you miss a class. 12) Study, study, study and study some more, and when you are sick of studying, study everything again :>) Students with Special Needs: These students will be accommodated to the best of my ability. Arrangements are the responsibility of the student and should be initiated by contacting the Students with Disabilities Services Office ( ) or the Student Counseling Center ( ). Academic Honesty: All students are expected to complete their own work on exams without aid from their peers (knowingly or unknowingly). It is the student s responsibility to read and understand the NDSU Academic Honesty regulations. Violators will automatically receive a zero on that exam or assignment and other disciplinary action may also be taken (e.g. failing the entire course). This will be determined on a case by case basis with the appropriate student, faculty and administration committees. All work in this course must be completed in a manner consistent with NDSU University Senate Policy, section 335: Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct. The web site is Lecture Strategy I will try to: Start on time using the clock in the lecture hall. Finish on time using the clock in the lecture hall. o If you miss information because you are putting books away into your book bag, please do not get upset after an exam when you think (incorrectly) that I asked questions on material I didn t cover. I will often discuss the work of a scientist responsible for seminal research on what we are covering in class. Emphasize important vocabulary words (most likely all bold face words). Emphasize relevant structures that must be known. Cover the Lesson Objective for each lecture. Attempt to teach by explaining a topic several times with increasing detail. First lecture on a topic will be presented by slides and is aimed at giving an overview of relevant points. This will be followed by the necessary number of lectures needed to cover the topic in greater detail. Each subsequent class period will typically have a few review power point slides to begin class. These will be posted onto black board. Discuss experimental procedures relevant to Biochemistry. 5

6 Try to weave into the lecture objective, important medical correlations to the topics being discussed, as well as evolutionary facts!! Try to have a few minutes during each lecture for questions. Do not be intimidated to ask questions. A wise man once said, Who possesses more intelligence, the one who answered the question or the person who now knows the answer?
