NEURO-HYPNOTHERAPY THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN MALAYSIA

HIRO KOO'S BACKGROUND: Hiro Koo completed his international diploma in clinical hypnosis (Lond.) and graduated with a BSocSc(Hons) in Psychology. A certified EEG biofeedback specialist (S.B.C.I.A), a registered clinical hypnotherapist (MSCH, AHPM, APA-The Society of Psychological Hypnosis, Malaysian Psychological Association), a licensed Hypno-Band practitioner (UK) and an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner, Hiro Koo is currently attached to Spectrum of Life Proactive Healthcare Centre (SOL) as a psychologist. Hiro Koo's expertise in the field of clinical hypnotherapy, EEG biofeedback therapy, complementary and alternative medicine has placed him in great position to help us understand how our brain and subconscious mind play a predominant role in our mental, emotional and physical health. With specifics on how to get this powerful resource working for us on a daily basis, wellness can therefore be attained. (Written by Spectrum of Life proactive healthcare centre)

DO YOU KNOW? All of our mind activity can be measured scientifically by utilizing an EEG biofeedback tool. With our NeuroHypnotherapy technology, you can scientifically see yourself going into states of Alpha", "Theta", and "Delta, and these three levels can be considered states or depths of Hypnosis.

Misconceptions about hypnotherapy: You will not become unconscious and you will be aware of everything at all times. Your will is not weakened in any way. You are in control and cannot be made to do anything against your will. You will not begin to reveal information you wish to keep secret. Hypnosis is not sleep. One common misconception is that a hypnotized person loses their will and is partially or completely under the command of the hypnotist. Nothing could be further from the truth. This unfortunate belief is reinforced by many stage hypnotists. You are in control of yourself, and cannot be made to do anything that is against your will. Hypnosis, particularly the deeper forms, can appear to be like sleep because the person's body is typically very still and quiet. There is usually a great deal of mental activity, and measurements of brain activity during hypnosis that shows a significant level of neurological activity.

PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH: FREUD S MODEL OF HYPNOSIS Freud initially utilized hypnosis to help remove psychosomatic symptoms from patients who suffered from what we would now call a somatoform disorder. These patients suffered from medical complaints like seizures, muscular spasms, and paralysis of their limbs that was transient and/or was not thought to be the entirely the result of a general medical condition. Freud learned that he could temporarily or permanently reduce many of these symptoms using direct hypnotic suggestions for the symptoms to be reversed. (e.g.,: Your arm is calm again and will no longer spasm. ) Freud also believed that Hypnosis allowed him access to memories within the patient s unconscious mind which had been previously repressed. Eventually, Freud began using free association instead of hypnosis as a way of accessing the unconscious. 12

HYPNOSIS AS A CLINICAL TOOL Hypnosis is generally used in two ways as a clinical tool: A. Making Direct Suggestions for Symptom Reduction B. Using hypnosis as an adjunct to other forms of psychotherapy (e.g., CBT). 13

A. MAKING DIRECT SUGGESTIONS FOR SYMPTOM REDUCTION Example A hypnotist suggests to a patient undergoing a painful medical procedure (e.g., surgery, a lumbar puncture, spinal tap) that the affected body part (i.e., the back) is numb and insensitive to pain. This is a classic use of hypnosis. 14

B. PRESENTING COGNITIVEBEHAVIORAL THERAPY PLUS HYPNOSIS Research suggests that using a combination of hypnosis and CBT improves outcomes for about 70% of patients relative to using CBT alone (Kirsch et al., 1995). Examples: Progressive Muscle Relaxation becomes hypnotic relaxation. Guided Imagery becomes hypnotic imagery. Systematic Desensitization becomes hypnotic desensitization. Coping self-statements become coping self-suggestions. 15

C. PRESENTING NEUROFEEDBACK PLUS HYPNOSIS Neuro-Hypnotherapy is based on EEG brainwave frequency monitoring. It is non-invasive, painless and safe with no side effects.

Traditional Hypnotherapy Neuro-hypnotherapy Depths of Hypnosis Using physiological measures to quantify the depth of the hypnotic trance. Depths of Hypnosis Based on EEG biofeedback tool, you can scientifically see yourself going into states of Alpha", "Theta", and Assessment - assessment is noticing "Delta, and these three levels can client's personal history, be considered states or depths of appearance and behaviour etc. Hypnosis.
