1 Project In-the-Hoop Crewelwork Christmas Ornaments Dress up your tree or mantel this holiday season with crewelwork ornaments that have the look of hand embroidery, but are done on your embroidery machine. Skill Level: Beginner Required Software: Amazing Designs In-The-Hoop Crewelwork Christmas Ornament embroidery designs (ADC-274) Embroidery editing software, such as Amazing Designs Edit 'N Stitch 2.0 INCLUDES 61 DESIGNS FOR 4" x 4" HOOPS AND 4 DESIGNS FOR 5" x 7" HOOPS. In-the-Hoop Crewelwork Christmas Ornaments 65 Classic Designs Supplies needed: Embroider/sewing machine with 4" x 4" (100mm x 100mm hoop or larger) 1-3/4 yds. Ivory felt fabric 10 yds. 5/16" wide ribbon Cotton Soft Tear-away Stabilizer or No-Show Cut-away Mesh Stabilizer Water activated adhesive Tear-Away Stabilizer Twenty-seven 1/2" 5/8" red buttons Wash-away basting tape, such as Wonder Tape or fabric glue stick Sewer s Fix-It Tape Prewound bobbins All-purpose sewing thread Topstitch machine needle, size 100 Thread snips Scallop scissors, pinking shears, or straight edge scissors Erasable fabric marking pen Wonder Clips Assortment of Madeira Lana, Cotona, and Rayon threads (see thread chart included with designs) Optional: Temporary adhesive fabric spray, such as KK2000 Optional: bobbins wound to matched rayon thread color Note: Supply amounts are given for completing the featured projects: 27 ornaments, 25 countdown stocking ornaments, and one mantel scarf (approximate finished size: 9-1/2" x 59-1/2"). 2 Embroider Ornaments Cut a small length of wash-away basting tape and place in Instructions: (see page 6 for stocking ornaments instructions) 1. Prepare ornament components: Prepare fabric: - Cut two 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares of felt for each ornament. Cut one 6" length of ribbon for each ornament. Cut one piece Cotton Soft stabilizer to fit hoop for each the ribbon placement area, or dot with fabric glue stick. Adhere one end of ribbon to stabilizer. ornament. 2. Embroider Crewelwork Christmas ornament: Hoop one layer of Cotton Soft Stabilizer or No-Show Cut- Away Mesh Stabilizer in 4" x 4" machine embroidery hoop or larger. Select an all-purpose thread. Stitch Colors 1 and 2 for placement guidelines. Baste tape or dot glue second ribbon end on top of the first ribbon end. Secure the looped ribbon with a small piece of Sewer s Fix-It Tape. Try different loop styles flat loop, cross-over loop, and tight cross-over loop. Flat Crossover Tight Crossover Note: A darker thread is used for visibility in photography, but choose a color closer to the felt color for your projects. Stitch Color 3 to stitch ribbon ends to the stabilizer. 2
3 Dab a bit of glue stick just outside the stitched outline. Remove hoop from the embroidery unit, but DO NOT unhoop the project. Dab a bit of glue stick on the underside of the hooped stabilizer just outside the embroidery area. Optional: A tiny spritz of temporary spray adhesive on the wrong side of the backing felt square will work well also. Position one square of felt over the ornament outline. Position and gently pat the felt backing square into place. Stitch Color 4 to baste felt in place. Optional: Skip stitches over the ribbon hanging loop. Reattach hoop and embroider the remaining two colors. These may be stitched in the same thread color. Note: Use the thread colors specified on the color chart included with the designs. Complete decorative embroidery up to the last two colors. Optional: Replace the embroidery bobbin with a matching rayon bobbin for a prettier wrong side of the ornament. 3
4 When stitching is completed, remove ornament from the hoop. Gently tear away the Cotton Soft stabilizer. If No-Show Cut- Away Mesh was used as stabilizer, treat it as part of the felt ornament. - Then bring the ribbon over the front to trim, aligning scallop or pinking blade with the trimmed front edge. Be especially careful to not cut the ribbon. - Then trim remaining layers together. The straight stitched outline is actually your cutting guideline. Clip the few stitches of the outline that basted the ribbon hanger to the stabilizer. Scallop cut Pinking cut Straight cut Use a scalloped scissor, pinking shears, or straight edge scissor to carefully cut out the ornament. - Carefully trim the layers separately at the ribbon hanger. Bring the ribbon to the backing to trim the front. Note: Design #s ORN321, 313 and 304 have two different ribbon positions, giving you extra ornament options. Position and baste one ribbon loop on either the upper or lower placements and complete the ornament. 4
5 4. Optional: Create reversible Crewelwork Christmas ornaments. Select desired ornament embroidery design and mirrorimage it for the back of the ornament. Stitch Color 1. Skip Colors 2 and 3 completely. Select and embroider the non-mirror-image design following directions above, in step 3, up to the last two thread colors. Dab glue stick on the wrong side of the embroidery, just outside the placement outline. Position first square of felt over placement outline, using small dabs of glue stick to secure the felt over the outline. Back the hooped ornament with the reserved embroidered felt backing, aligning the placement outlines. Stitch Color 4 and the remaining decorative portions of the design. Do not stitch the last two colors. Replace the embroidery bobbin with a matching rayon bobbin to complete the reversibility of the ornament. Remove the embroidered ornament back from the hoop and gently tear away excess stabilizer. Set aside. 5
6 Trim outer edges of the ornament in the same manner as described in step 3, being extra careful to not cut the ribbon hanger. Optional: To economize on stabilizer, hoop and embroider directly off the stabilizer roll. Clip the roll with Wonder Clips and hoop so the roll is positioned to the outside or behind the embroidery machine. Front Back Designer Note: If the embroidered back does not line up perfectly with the front, trim the front and back layers separately with the straight edge scissors, as pictured. Embroider Stocking Ornaments Instructions: 1. Prepare stocking ornament components: Cut two 4-1/2" x 4-1/2 squares of felt for each stocking ornament. (50 squares for twenty-five count-down stockings) Cut one 6" ribbon hanger length for each ornament. For the mantle scarf, cut the ribbon different lengths: -Cut thirteen 5" lengths of ribbon (for stocking #s: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25) - Cut four 7" lengths of ribbon (for stocking #s: 4, 10, 16, and 22) - Cut eight 10" lengths of ribbon (for stocking #s: 2, 6, 8, 12, 14, 18, 20, and 24) Hoop one layer of Cotton Soft Stabilizer or No-Show Cut- Away Mesh Stabilizer for each stocking in a 4" x 4" machine embroidery hoop or larger. 2. Select stocking ornament embroidery design. 3. Embroider Crewelwork Christmas Stocking Ornament or Count-Down Stocking: Select an all-purpose thread. Stitch Colors 1 and 2 for placement guidelines. Note: A darker thread is used for visibility in photography, but choose a lighter color for your projects. Cut a small length of wash-away basting tape and place in the ribbon placement area, or dot with fabric glue stick. 6
7 Adhere one end of ribbon to stabilizer. Stitch Color 3 to stitch ribbon ends to the stabilizer. Baste tape or dot glue second ribbon end on top of the first ribbon end. Dab a bit of glue stick just outside the stitched outline. Secure the looped ribbon with a small piece of Sewer s Fix-It Tape. Position one square of felt over the ornament outline. Stitch Color 4 to baste felt in place. Note: Try the flat loop, it buttons neatly to the mantle scarf. See page
8 Optional: Skip stitches over the ribbon hanging loop. Position and gently pat the felt backing square into place. Note: Use the thread colors specified on the color chart included with the designs. Complete decorative embroidery up to the last two colors. Reattach hoop and embroider the remaining two colors. These may be stitched in the same thread color. Gently tear away the Cotton Soft Stabilizer. If the No-Show Cut-Away Mesh was used as the stabilizer, treat as part of the felt ornament. The straight stitched outline is actually your cutting guideline. Clip the few stitches of the outline that basted the ribbon hanger to the stabilizer, unless you skipped those few stitches. Use a scalloped scissor, pinking shears, or straight edge scissor to carefully cut out the ornament. See page 4. 8
9 -Trim all layers together, along the stocking sides and toe. Optional: Merge or combine small decorative accents, or sprinkles, to the countdown stocking ornament to further embellish each stocking. -Then carefully trim the layers separately along the top edge. Bring the ribbon to the back and trim the front. Designer Note: Embroider the sprinkles after the stocking front felt is basted to the stabilizer and before embroidering/ stitching the backing felt to the stocking. Simply change-up in the stitching order. Or, use Edit N Stitch 2.0 software to extract portions of accent designs to embellish the countdown stockings. Then bring the ribbon over the front to trim the back, aligning scallop or pinking blade with the trimmed front edge. Be especially careful to not cut the ribbon. 4. Optional: Create reversible Crewelwork Christmas stocking ornaments: Select one of the decorative stocking ornament embroidery designs and mirror-image it for the back of the countdown stocking ornament. Hoop a piece of Cotton Soft stabilizer. Stitch Color 1. Skip Colors 2 and 3 completely. Use the same steps to create the count-down stockings for the mantle scarf. 9
10 Position first square of felt over placement outline, using small dabs of glue stick to secure the felt over the outline. Dab a bit of glue stick just outside the stitched outline. Stitch Color 4 and the remaining decorative portions of the design. Do not stitch the last two colors. Back the hooped stocking with the reserved embroidered felt stocking back, aligning the placement outlines. Remove the embroidered ornament back from the hoop and gently tear away excess stabilizer. Set aside. Replace the embroidery bobbin with the matching rayon bobbin to complete the reversibility of the ornament. Select and embroider a countdown stocking design following directions above, in step 3, up to the last two thread colors. Trim outer edges of the ornament in the same manner as described above, in Step 3, being extra careful to not cut the ribbon hanger. 10
11 Create the Mantel Scarf Approximate finished size: 9-1/2" x 59-1/2" - Stop the machine when the stitching is approximately 1/4" from the end marking. Instructions: 1. Prepare and mark felt fabric: Cut two pieces 12" x width of the fabric (wof) or approximately 72" wide. Mark one piece to embroider for mantle scarf front. Note: A dark marker was used in the photos for visibility. You will want to use an erasable fabric marking pen. - Draw a line approximately 3/4" above one long edge. Mark center and 30" away on opposite sides of the center line. 72" Option 2: - Stitch all but the outer scallop at each end. - Determine what portions of the scallop are not needed, within 1/4" from the marked end of the mantle scarf. Use a template to see what embroidery fits. 12" 30" from center 30" from center Center line 3/4" Print out templates of design #s: ORN328 and ORN Using embroidery editing software, such as Amazing Designs Edit 'N Stitch 2.0, delete the un-needed portions of the scallop design. - Print a new template and double check positioning. Use the edited design to complete the mantle scarf ends. Position templates to create a scalloped edge approximately 1/2" above the marked guideline. 3. Assemble the mantle scarf. 2. Embroider the scarf edge, beginning with the center scallop: Measure up approximately 2-1/2" from the bottom curves of the large scallops and mark for a stitched crease guideline. To embroider the partial scallops at opposite ends of the mantel scarf, use one of the following options. Option 1: - Watch the embroidery machine closely, slow down the stitching speed if needed. 11
12 Measure and cut 7" (the depth of the mantle shelf) from the crease guideline for the top of the mantle scarf. Measure and cut the width of the scarf front to 59-1/2" (1/2" narrower than the mantle shelf). Then trim the scalloped front edge, both fabric layers, using a pinking shears, scallop scissor, or straight edge scissors (see page 4.) Place the embroidered mantle scarf front on the second piece of felt. Pin layers together. Sew a button at the top of each scallop and at the center of each large scallop. Stitch on the marked crease guideline. Hang the stockings, all in a row. Add an ornament on the extra buttons, if desired. Edgestitch the three straight sides and close to the embroidered scallops.
