3 1. Course Description Spanish is the official language for more than 350 million people in Spain and Latin America. Besides, Spanish is the second language in the United States. When negotiating with companies in Spanish speaking countries, knowledge of the Spanish language is essential, as most people do not speak English. This course offers you a basic knowledge of Spanish, preparing you partially for an internship or study abroad in a Spanish speaking country. All skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) will be practiced on a basic level for day-to-day situations and business situations, although during the lectures time is spent on speaking and listening. The spoken language in class will be preferably Spanish. Apart from the language, you will learn more about Spanish and Latin American culture. 2. Course Goals and Learning Objectives The main objective is to give you enough idiomatic and grammatical knowledge to be able to participate in short, daily conversations with Spanish speaking people and business partners. After the course you will have reading and listening skills at a A2 level of the European Framework and speaking and writing skills at a A1 level. You will be able to: introduce yourself or others greet people adequately: formal and informal context talk about your study/ your work talk about spare time give and understand directions describe the structure of a company and its activities describe products ask and answer simple questions about personal data (age, nationality, name, place of birth, telephone number, mail address, profession, ) describe your house, your neighborhood in terms of basic infrastructure describe your country/ region/ city in terms of touristic infrastructure express (dis)agreement express doubt or uncertainty express quantities (numbers, prices, m2, %, ) describe someone s character locate objects and people in space compare objects ask for and tell the time talk about time tables understand a simple text: answer MC-questions about it, tick true or false statements tell something basic about specific cultural items of the Spanish speaking world (names, errands, company culture, formal and informal interaction, housing, ) Talk about time tables express likes, dislikes, preferences schedule appointments with a business partner/ friend (propose time/ place, cancel, postpone, excuse yourself,..) invite someone for something, accept or refuse an invitation talk about your daily routine and your spare time make a reservation for hotel, ticket, journey order in a restaurant talk about basic food and basic ingredients Besides knowledge of the Spanish language, you will get to know more about Spanish and Latin American countries and culture by reading short texts.
4 3. Place in the Curriculum and Related Courses The course prepares you partially for an internship or study abroad in a Spanish speaking country. It shows similarities with other language courses like International Business Communication and is related to Intercultural Management. 4. Study Burden 5 EC = 5 x 28 hours = 140 hours Term C + D: 1 x 90 minutes + 1 x 60 contact hours + 1 x 30 minutes hours per week on 2-3 different days per term = 14 x 150 minutes contact hours 35 hours = 14 x 30 minutes 7 hours Class preparation (exercises Workbook 5 hours per unit / units 1-8) 40 hours Study grammar and vocabulary (60 minutes per week / 14 weeks) 14 hours Preparation tests (vocabulary and grammar) 6 hours Self assessment exercises, portfolio assignments and additional presentations in class 14 hours Exam preparation 20 hours Written exam 4 hours 5. Pre-requisites No previous knowledge is required. 6. Exemption Possibilities All exemptions must go through the Exam Board and are only possible with a A1 official certificate issued by a university of language institute certified by the Instituto Cervantes Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) lomas_spaans.htm 7. BBA Competencies After this course you will have a basic knowledge of the Spanish language needed in a range of familiar and business situations. You will be also aware of cultural differences in Spain and Latin America. Level A2 of the Common European Framework for Modern Languages Listening and reading Level A1 of the Common European Framework for Modern Languages Speaking and writing You Can identify similarities and differences between cultures (and partially adjust yourself to these); Can read a text in Spanish; Can participate in small talk; Can ask questions; Can give your own opinion;
5 Can express intentions; Have some knowledge of topical, social and cultural developments; Can understand spoken language about business related subjects. I.2 Intercultural competency (level 1) - The student is aware of cultural differences, can indicate if different behaviour could be based on difference in cultural background, shows interest in the cultural background of others and is aware of basic elements of his own cultural background. IV.2 Co-operation (level 1) - The ability to reflect and work with others when asked or when the situation requires this. - The ability to react to the contribution of others. - The ability to concentrate on the realisation of the group goals IV.3 Business communication (level A1) - The ability to express himself at a basic level: A1 of the CEF V.5 Planning and organising (level 1) - The ability to make a realistic and effective planning of his own activities. VI.6 Learning and self-development (level 1) - The ability to make a simple strengths and weaknesses analysis, to use the SMART method to indicate in a practical learning situation how and when he intends to improve his weaknesses and to describe this in a basic personal activity plan. 8. Didactic Forms Lectures During the lectures you can ask questions about the grammar, vocabulary and homework. The teacher will explain the new aspects of Spanish grammar and vocabulary in class and will give feedback on your exercises. We will focus on the active skills: speaking and listening by doing role-plays (dialogues in pairs), short presentations and listening exercises. Preparation at home Individually the student has to prepare the lectures: - Learn the vocabulary and grammar (weekly test to prepare yourself for the final written test) - Practice writing and reading skills (with the help of the Workbook Colegas 1). - Prepare role plays and short presentations - Read texts about Spanish culture and subjects related to the actual Spanish way of life 9. 11 10. Assessment Type of Assessment Weighting Min. Mark Written exam Term C 50% 5.5 Written exam Term D 50% 5.5 Final assessment will be based on the following criteria: A. The student has participated actively, prepared his/her classes, handed in the assignments in time; B. At the end of term C a written exam (grammar and vocabulary and text) takes place on Colegas 1: Unidades 1-4. At the end of term D there is a written exam on Colegas 1: Unidades 5-8. MIND You might have deduced we expect you to be active and prepared once you enter the classroom. If you do not come prepared, you will be denied access to the class. In the exams the following items will be assessed: knowledge of vocabulary of the Units of Colegas 1 (Spanish English and English Spanish) application of grammar rules within given sentences formulation of communicative expressions by answering questions or completing dialogues text (reading comprehension) IMPORTANT: The resit for the written exams will take place in the official exam period (Term D/E) Note that your grade for both writing exams is conditional on the submission and results of the portfolio assignments. 11.
