2 feature story Up, up, and away Joseph Swart saw first-hand the potential unmanned aircraft have when he flew combat missions with drones in the U.S. Air Force in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They enable precision, reliability, and accuracy for data collection that a human can t possibly measure up to right now, Swart said. People on the forefront of that industry have a promising future. To get in on the ground floor in a rapidly growing industry, Swart has taken a job with Empire Unmanned, which is based out of Hayden and was recently given the first FAA approval for use of drones commercially for precision agriculture. Drones are part of an industry that s just getting started it s just a baby, Swart said. It s going to increase exponentially and it s great to be a part of that industry in the beginning when you can get a good foothold. The Federal Aviation Administration predicts the number of regulated Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the U.S. will rise to 7,500 by 2018 as drones are increasingly incorporated into commercial activity. With North Idaho College s Workforce Training Center and Aerospace Center of Excellence located in the area along with drone-related businesses such as Empire Unmanned, North Idaho is poised to be at the forefront of drone operations. The NIC Workforce Training Center is currently offering several drone courses including: Remotely Piloted Aircraft: Fixed-Wing; Remotely Piloted Aircraft: Multi Rotor Learn to fly a fixed-wing or multi rotor aircraft or UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) under manual control and train for duties as an external pilot in which manual control is required to safely recover a fixed-wing type. If you are interested in hobby and recreational flight, this course will qualify you to fly solo at most AMA fields. Three days of training includes ground school, simulated flight training, and live flight instruction and practice.
