1 Poetry: Unit 2 Exam This exam is 1 hour and 45 minutes Section A Unseen poem One essay question on an Unseen poem. (20 marks) Section B Anthology Poems (Clashes and Collisions) One question 3a) on a theme from a selected poem from the collection (15 marks) A choice of two questions 3b)i or 3b)ii, where you compare the named poem in question 3a) with another poem of your choice. (15 marks) You need to use evidence from the poem to support your answers. Top tips: High-level vocabulary Double-level analysis- is one effect emphasised or undermined by another? Micro-analyse your poem Where can you see two sides to the poem? (dualism)

3 Half-caste by John Agard How does John Agard use linguistic and grammatical features to influence the reader and challenge the perceptions of race? or Explain how Agard uses language and form to put forward his point of view in Half- Caste. Poetic techniques in Half caste Use of the first person Use of dialect and sentence construction Repetition Rhyme Imagery Humorous tone No punctuation Exemplar paragraph: Agard shows both anger and humour in the way he responds to Half-Caste. He speaks very aggressively to the reader. He uses the first person to make this more direct: Explain yuself/wha yu mean. These words are a direct challenge to the reader, as Agard asks them to give an account of their behaviour. He then softens this by using a ridiculous image to highlight how illogical they are being, treating him differently because he is of mixed race. It is clearly impossible for him to choose to listen only in one ear, but he is making a serious point- he is one person and should be treated fairly and with respect. 8 Catrin by Gillian Clarke Possible task Explore how the conflict between a mother and daughter is presented in Catrin. Use examples from the poem to support your answer. Possible approaches: Two very different stanzas (past vs present) to reflect how relationships change/ develop over time. Each stanza also ends with a full stop. How does this affect the ending of the poem? Contrasting groups of words to show love and conflict. How does this make the narrator seem? 9 Cousin Kate by Christina Rosetti Two women are described in the poem- the narrator and her cousin, Kate. This poem is a ballad and it tells a story from the narrator s perspective about being shunned by society after her experiences with the lord. Some readers think that she feels more betrayed by her cousin than the lord. Looking closely at the poem This poem was written in the 19th century so it contains many words that are less common today. Look at the following words from the poem and see if you can work out their meaning: maiden, mindful, fair, flaxen, lured, palace-home, woe s me, mean estate, outcast, howl in dust, gold, fret, sire, coronet Find the words Rossetti uses that are connected with wealth. Find the words Rossetti uses that are connected with pain and dirt. Possible task Explain how Rossetti creates sympathy for the narrator in Cousin Kate.
