1 February 19, 2017 Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: Who loves you? Bottom Line: Jesus loves me. Memory Verse: How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. Ephesians 3:18, NIV Bible Story Focus: Jesus wants to help me. The Centurion Matthew 8:5-13 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) 1. Follow the Leader What You Need: A shield During the Activity: Show the children your leader shield and instruct them to follow you around the room as you march. Take them around the room a few times and then choose another child to hold the shield and be the leader. Repeat as time and interest allow. During the Activity: Does everyone see my shield? (Hold up shield.) Pretty cool, right? I call this my leader shield. For this activity, whoever is holding the shield is the leader. Okay, here we go. I have the shield, so everyone follow me around the room as we march! (Lead the children around the room a few times.) That was great following, everyone. Let s see, I think I need another leader! (Choose a child to be the new leader and give her the shield.) Okay, now [child s name] is the leader, so let s all follow her! After the Activity: Great job following the leader, friends. In our Bible story today, we ll hear about a leader in the army that led a LOT of soldiers! I can t wait. Question of the Day: What is your favorite color? What are some of your favorite things that are the same color? 2. Bible Story Read A Captain s Faith pgs in The Beginner s Bible. 2 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 15 minutes) 1. Shield What You Need: cardstock shield, handle, label, decorations Before the Activity: Hand out cardstock shield and set decorations on the table. During the Activity: Help each child to decorate and label their shield. During the Activity: We re going to create a shield that you can take home with you today! This will remind us that Jesus helped the Centurian soldier and Jesus will help us too! After the Activity: Okay, friends, your shields look wonderful. Tell me: Who wants to help you? [basic truth] Jesus wants to help me. Yes, He does, my friends! Jesus is happy to help you all the time because.who loves you? [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me! Who loves you? [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me! 2. Finger Puppet Story What You Need: Finger Puppets and Script Activity Pages, tape, and crayons Before the Activity: You ll need one set of puppets and one script for each child. During the Activity: Pass out a set of finger puppets to each child and crayons for them to color their puppets. When they re finished coloring, help them roll the bottom around and tape it, so that each puppet fits around the child s finger. Pass out the Script to each child and read it aloud. Let the children use the puppets to act out the story. During the Activity: That was a great story! Do you remember the two people in our Bible story today? One was Jesus and one was a soldier called a centurion. So, who were the two people? (Pause.) That s right! I have these super awesome finger puppets to help us retell the story. (Hold up.) Let s color them and then I ll help you tape them up so they fit on your fingers! (Allow children time to color their puppets and then help them tape them.) Your puppets look great! Now I want to read you this script. I have copies of these so you can take them home and retell the story to your Mom and Dad using your puppets! I m a centurion. (Hold up the centurion puppet.) I m a leader, but sometimes I need help. I went to Jesus (hold up the Jesus puppet) and He helped me. Jesus wants to help me because He loves me! Who loves you? [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me. 3 After the Activity: That was fun playing with our puppets! Now you can take them home to remind you that Jesus loves you and wants to help you, just like He loved and helped the centurion. Who loves you? [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me. 3. Books of the Bible Review the books of the Bible, Matthew 2 Timothy, with the children. Practice saying them in funny voices (whispering, squeaking like a mouse, etc.), motor activity (jumping, marching, etc.), or with hand motions (clapping, chomping like an alligator, etc.). OK, now we are going to learn the New Testament Books of the Bible. Do you know who we learn about in the New Testament? That s right! We learn about Jesus! Let s practice! Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians, 1&2 Timothy. Can you say it with me? Make It Real (Small Group Application & Prayer, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card in your Bible at Ephesians 3:18. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Who do you ask to help you when you need help? (Pause.) Who did the centurion in today s Bible story ask to help him? Yes! He asked Jesus to help him. And what did Jesus do when the centurion asked Him for help? He helped him! Jesus helped the centurion because He loved Him. Are you ready for the best part? Jesus will help you because He loves you too! Who loves you? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me! SGL: Yes! Jesus loves you with a love that is SO big you can t even measure how big it is! That s why our memory verse this month says (open Bible to memory verse card): How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, Ephesians 3:18. (Lay Bible down.) Say that with me. And don t forget the motions! CHILDREN and SGL: How wide (hold arms out wide) and long (hold arms out vertically) and high (jump as high as you can) and deep (pretend to dig with a shovel) is the love (hug yourself) of Christ (point up), Ephesians 3:18. (Open hands like a book.) (Repeat several times.) SGL: Way to go! That was so good! Okay, come sit with me so we can write in our prayer journal. Today I want us to make a list of things we need help with. I ll write everyone s name in our prayer Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2015 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 3
4 journal. When I say your name, I want you to tell me one thing you need help with and I ll write it beside your name. We can use the list we make when we pray. (Open prayer journal and hold your fun pen. Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters. ) Thanks for helping me make this list. We all need help some times, right? Right! I ll use this list when I pray. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, You are so, so good! Thank You for giving us Jesus. He is a true friend who loves us and helps us when we ask. I pray that each of my friends here will always remember that Jesus wants to help them when they need it. Please help [child s name] with [thing he listed]. (Repeat for each child.) Thank You for always listening to our prayers. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Get Ready to Dismiss (Think ORANGE) Place take-home creations and this month s Parent Cue in each child s paper bag. Greet parents at the door and tell them that this month preschoolers are learning that [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me Encourage parents to repeat the Bottom Line at home and help their child understand that [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me Encourage parents to use the activities found in Parent CUE to reinforce this month s Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] Jesus loves me AND this month s Memory Verse. 6 Script A Roman Commander Has Faith Matthew 8:5-13 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman commander came to him. He asked Jesus for help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home and can't move. He is hurt." Jesus said, "I will go and heal him." The commander said, "Lord, you don t have to come to my house. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed. I am a soldier. I listen to my leaders and my soldiers listen to and obey me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes. I tell that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those following him, "What I'm about to tell you is true. In Israel I have not found anyone whose faith is so strong. Then Jesus said to the Roman commander, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.
