(354.23) (354.31) (49.14(4)(v) Admission Procedures The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences does not require students to declare their majors until the end of their sophomore year, giving them an opportunity to experience academic life and to make a considered decision. Therefore, this Department cannot identify Secondary Education majors officially until their fourth semester. For those freshmen who enter Villanova identifying themselves as teacher candidates, early advisement is possible. Entering freshmen in mathematics and the sciences who identify Secondary Education as their academic major, will be counseled by the Registrar s Office to enroll in Calculus I, for example, their first semester, and to see an advisor from the Education and Human Services Department to select the appropriate courses. These students can submit their formal application to the program their third semester, in anticipation of completing 48 semester credits. Entering freshmen in the Arts need not declare a major until their fourth semester at Villanova. They are advised in the Advising Center located on the fourth floor of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences building, and staffed by academic and career counselors. The Education and Human Services Department keeps information on the Secondary Education major and other programs updated. Those students who decide to major in Education can apply formally to enter the Teacher Certification Program their third semester in anticipation of meeting the requirements. In order to inform Liberal Arts and Sciences students regarding the state requirements for certification (many of whom may not be aware of the teacher preparation requirements if they plan to teach upon graduation), the Department sends s out to freshmen and sophomores informing them of the requirements (Attachment A). The Department also sponsors an Open House for Liberal Arts students in April, to meet the Education faculty and staff and to talk about careers in education (Attachment B). The admissions process takes place over two semesters: students can apply during their third semester, in anticipation of completing the requisite credits. Letters of acceptance, provisional acceptance, or rejection are sent by the end of the fourth 1

2 semester, with additional requirements that Secondary Education majors must meet in order to be retained. Requirements for remaining in the program appear below. That candidates meet the requirements is verified by the Field Placement Coordinator and the Undergraduate Faculty Coordinator before they are accepted into the program. Candidates continue to be monitored for retention by their faculty advisors, and again, when they apply for student teaching the first semester of their junior year. Credentials are checked prior to graduation, and for those who apply for state certification, prior to submitting their applications to Harrisburg. How Students Learn About the Admissions Process Candidates access the admissions information through the Department website, the Undergraduate Student Handbook, reminders in class from faculty, and visits to sophomore Education classes by the Field Placement Coordinator, Christine Maurer. In addition, a mandatory general information meeting for Education majors is held at the beginning of each semester in which admission procedures are explained. Ms. Maurer s and follows up with students who do not submit their applications on time. As mentioned above, the Department s freshmen and sophomores in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to inform them of the state certification requirements in order to teach following graduation. Application Requirements for the Teacher Certification Program Submit a formal application to the Teacher Certification Program during the semester when applicant expects to complete 47 (Arts) or 48 (Math and Sciences) semester credit hours (Attachments C and D); -- Transfer students with a GPA of at least 3.0 from within Villanova or another college or university must apply as above; -- Post-baccalaureate admission requirements follow; Completed these Villanova courses: -- Six semester credits minimum of college-level mathematics or equivalent (Attachment E); -- Core Humanities 1000 and 1001 (Attachment F); -- English 1050: The Literary Experience; and -- EDU 2201/2202: Social Foundations of Education I or II, one course. Upon application, a minimum GPA of 3.0*, or 2.8 by the end of first semester sophomore year; *Alternative qualifiers see Alternative Admissions Policies section following; Two letters of recommendation from faculty members at Villanova University: 2

3 one from an Education professor and one from a professor in the teaching subject area; and A typed, double-spaced one-page essay describing the candidate s goals and why s/he wants to become a teacher. Alternative Admissions Policies: the 10% Waiver Up to 10% of candidates who apply for the undergraduate program with less than the required 3.0 GPA and a minimum 2.8 GPA, may use alternative qualifiers. These include: a combined score of 1050 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), with no score lower than 500 on either verbal or mathematics subtest, or a score of no less than 23 on the English subtest and 20 on the mathematics subtest of the American College Testing Program (ACT), or qualifying scores on the PRAXIS I Pre-Professional Skills test as determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. They may be admitted on a provisional basis and given a semester to meet the requirements (Attachment I). Acceptance Procedures Applications can be submitted from the end of fall semester sophomore year through the following fall, and are reviewed as they are received. First, Ms. Maurer, the Field Placement Coordinator, checks the applications (Attachment G) to verify the information given and that the requirements to date have been met. The Undergraduate Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Durnin, then reviews the complete application and sends a letter to each applicant indicating one of three decisions: 1). Acceptance (Attachment H); 2). Provisional acceptance, in which the candidate has the following semester to fully meet the requirements, e.g., raise a 2.8 GPA to 3.0, declare a Secondary Education major, submit an additional letter of recommendation. An acceptance letter is sent when the provisions have been met (Attachment I); and 3). Rejection, if the GPA is below 2.8, or additional courses must be taken, and advising the candidate to reapply when the requirements have been met (Attachment J). Requirements for Remaining in the Program In the acceptance letter that is sent to candidates, Dr. Durnin specifies further requirements that candidates must meet in order to be retained in the program: Within the admitted semester, take and pass the PRAXIS I exams; Formally declare a major in Secondary Education; 3

4 Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA each semester; Join the Student PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association); Maintain a working electronic portfolio based on the INTASC Standards; and Successfully complete all field experiences. Candidates who fall below a 3.0 GPA are placed on probation and given a semester in which to raise their average. Any candidate who falls below a 3.2 GPA must meet with his or her advisor, where they will be advised and referred to University support services as needed. Dr. Durnin sends warning letters to these students, and every effort is made to help them succeed (Attachment K). With under 75 students in the undergraduate Education program, close personal attention can be given to every candidate. University Recruiting of Underrepresented Minorities Villanova University has an Office of Multicultural Affairs that recruits minorities. It was formally established in 1969 and became a part of the Act 101 statewide system in The Academic Advancement Program recruits highly motivated students whose high school credentials suggest that they can, with academic support, successfully matriculate at Villanova University. The Academic Advancement Program conducts a Pre-College Summer Program prior to a student's first semester at Villanova. During the pre-college session, students participate in the following academic course work: English, Reading, Mathematics, Critical Thinking and Chemistry. The Program is designated to assist students in making a successful transition into college-level programming Villanova also offers through the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Presidential Scholarships for Underrepresented Students, St. Martin DePorres Grants and Economic/Entrepreneurial Educational Awards. Eligible minority students can enter the Education and Human Services Program through ACT 101 with both economic and academic support. University Support Services The University offers a myriad of support services, which are referenced in the Undergraduate Student Handbook, and are detailed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences publication, the Enchiridion, beginning on page 113. Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Programs Baccalaureate degree holders may apply to either the post-baccalaureate program, offered through the Part-Time Studies Office, or to the year-long, full-time Master s Degree in Education Plus Certification Program. Both programs are posted on our website: Part-Time Certification only: 4

5 Full-Time Certification Plus Master s Degree: Admission Requirements for Post-Baccalaureate Students: Candidates with Bachelor s Degrees can return to college on a part-time basis in order to complete the preparation necessary to qualify for state certification. Frequently, teachers from private or parochial schools, who are currently teaching, decide to return in order to upgrade their teaching skills and options. Villanova supports the upgrading of teacher education in the community. Post-Baccalaureate candidates apply for the Teacher Certification Program through the Part-Time Studies Office (Attachment L). The application, with accompanying transcripts, is then sent to the Education and Human Services Department where appropriate full-time faculty members review the applicant s course work and outline the course requirements needed to complete the program. Part-time Studies students take courses day and evenings over a period of time until they complete the requirements. To be admitted to the Secondary Teacher Certification Program at Villanova University, the post-baccalaureate applicant must have: A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; Completed an application to the teacher certification program through Part- Time Studies and submitted all transcripts from colleges or universities attended; Achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher prior to application to the Part- Time Studies Program (or a cumulative GPA of 2.8 and passed the PRAXIS I test); A letter of recommendation from the faculty of one of the colleges or universities that the applicant attended; Taken at least six semester hours credit of college-level mathematics or equivalent; and Completed six semester hours credit of college-level English literature and composition. Each applicant is reviewed by the Chairperson of the Department of Education and Human Services of Villanova University. When a student is accepted into the Teacher Certification Program, the Director of Part-Time Studies sends an admission letter to the applicant s mailing address. Applicants who do not meet all of the requirements for admission will be advised to reapply once they have met the requirements. The same 10% waiver as above applies to part-time students. 5

6 Application to the Master of Arts in Education Plus Certification Program Applicants to the Master s Plus program apply through Villanova s Office of Graduate Studies and are sent for review to our Department. Candidates are selected by the Chair (Attachment M). Applicants who fail to meet any requirement for admission to the post-baccalaureate program are advised to reapply when they meet the requirements. Admission Requirements for the Master of Arts in Education Plus Certification Program To be admitted, applicants must have: Graduated from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in a teaching area (English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, etc.);* Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher; Completed at least six credits of college level mathematics or equivalent; Completed at least six credits of college-level English or equivalent; Taken the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller Analogies Test; Passed the PRAXIS I test; Submitted an application and all transcripts from colleges or universities attended; and Submitted three letters of recommendation, two from faculty of any college or university the applicant attended, and one from an employer or supervisor for whom the applicant worked. * Additional courses in the teaching area may be required prior to the start of the program. See subject area course requirements for more details (Attachment M). 6
