This Fall we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Westside Extension. In Fall 1995, we launched the program with a modest 30 offerings. Today, you can choose from more than 500 terrific not-for-credit classes for adults and children in a wide variety of subjects. West takes great pride in this first-rate program for the community. It offers top-quality career training programs, wonderful opportunities for personal and professional growth, and great recreational activities. 2 aquatics We ve got Aqua from A to Z! Aqua Aerobics It s exercise and relaxation all at once. Water is soothing and relaxing, yet your muscles definitely get a workout. Water exercises provide increased resistance and can improve cardiovascular health and muscle tone, even help you lose weight. Plus they re low-impact and especially forgiving if you have orthopedic problems, need physical therapy, or just haven t exercised in awhile. And you don t even need to know how to swim because the WLAC therapy pool is only four feet deep! Aqua Zumba Known as the Zumba pool party, the Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, the Aqua Zumba class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. 3 Fitness and recreation Zumba Party and have fun getting yourself into shape! That s what Zumba is all about. It s an effective, easyto-follow workout for beginners and regular exercisers. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, calorie-burning, dance-fitness experience that s geared toward health and happiness. In this fitness party, you will burn more calories than you thought you could. This sassy and energetic total-body, high-energy workout to Top 40 hits just feels like fun, but you ll get a great cardio workout along with some toning and strengthening and shaping. Please call the office to purchase 4 consecutive weeks with the start date of your choice. 4 Tuesdays 7-8 pm $49 4 Saturdays am $49 Muay Thai/Thai Boxing Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is the national sport of Thailand and a great workout. Thanks to a partnership between Westside Extension and the Royal Thai Consulate General, Los Angeles, you can explore Thai Boxing for seven weeks for just $40! Learn the Art of Eight Limbs which includes the use of fists, knees, elbows and feet as well as basic footwork, offense, defense, and strategy. This safe, non-competitive, no-contact class will be taught by the professional staff of Muay Thai America Gym. Open to men, women, and minors with parental signature. Be prepared for intensity! All equipment provided except boxing gloves, which will be discussed at first class meeting. Dr. Alison Deliman, Chiropractor, is one of the first health care professionals in the United States to receive certification to teach Stick Yoga. She s been in private practice for over 25 years. Her first exposure to the profession began with the effective treatment of her own scoliosis at a young age. Barre (or bar) classes are all the rage now you see them everywhere, under lots of different names. That s because they work so well. The barre is a tool that allows you to do things you can t do any other way, working muscles you never knew existed. It s like adding a fourth dimension to your workout which will also include weights and calisthenics. You ll flatten abs, improve posture, burn calories, lose inches, and increase strength and flexibility. Plus Elissa s barre class is especially creative, so you won t be bored, just barred! Our supportive, easy-going class tailors postures to individual physical needs and abilities. Benefits include reduced pain, greater flexibility and balance, increased ability to deal with stress, and better sleep. Take a morning or an evening class or both, for greater benefits. In this course, you ll begin learning the Tai Chi form, comprised of poetically-named movements that strengthen muscles and bones, improve circulation and the functioning of internal organs. Relieve stress, and improve your focus and concentration. All courses are suited to both beginning and continuing students. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The focus will be directed at activating the powerhouse muscles and conscious breathing to strengthen, lengthen and tone the abdomen, pelvic cavity, lower back, glutes, hips and thighs. 6 Healthy Self Heal Yourself and Others With Acupressure Massage Feeling stressed, scattered, or strained? Apply the basics of Chinese healing to acupressure massage on yourself or others. Dr. Martin will introduce you to Chinese and holistic medicine, discussing concepts like chi, acupressure meridians, yin and yang, and Chinese tongue diagnosis. You ll learn approximately 16 acupressure points to use for common problems like low energy, mental clarity, and body aches as well as a basic head and neck massage technique that works wonders for sore shoulders and even migraine headaches. No partner necessary for this class, but you will be practicing the neck release points on classmates. Bring a small hand mirror and a water-soluble marker to class. Dr. Randy Martin is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Classical Homeopath with over 25 years of private practice in West LA, Encino, and Valencia. 7 recreation Fencing Ages 15 & Up Even President Obama tried fencing at the White House while promoting Chicago as a potential host city for the 2016 Olympics. A western martial art for the mind and body, fencing helps develop agility, balance, hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking! Learn the fundamentals of the sport, including body position, use of the saber, footwork, attack, defense and rules of the fencing strip in this four-week course. By the end of the class, you will be able to challenge one another in fencing bouts. Held off campus in West Los Angeles at a premium facility boasting a high-tech sports floor for performance and safety, Italian electric scoring machines to help fencers determine the validity of their touches, a comfortable environment, and outstanding coaches coach Grigore is a two-time Olympian and coach Costin has worked over two decades with the Romanian national team, as well as the U.S. national team. His most representative student, Jason Rogers, won a silver medal for the U.S. at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Protective gear and saber will be provided during class. Students should wear a t-shirt, sweat pants and non-marking athletic shoes. En garde! This firstclass facility near LAX is the practice home of the 2012 & 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, and is located about 8 miles south of WLAC. Directions will be provided upon registration. Important: You MUST arrive 30 minutes before class the first day and check in with CLASS CONFIRMATION. Ice Skating Designed for the skater who has never skated or had formal ice skating instruction. You ll learn basic forward and backward skating, snowplow stops, swizzles, backward wiggles and forward crossovers. Class fee includes skate rental the day of each lesson. 8 Rowing & Sailing recreation UCLA Recreation/Marina Aquatic Center is extending enrollments to Westside Extension for water recreation classes in Marina del Rey. The majority of time is spent on the water, and the instructors are first-rate. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, in good health, able to swim 300 feet and tread water for five minutes, and not be afraid of the water. Directions to the Center will be provided upon registration. Please sign up at least three days before your class starts. Sunset/Full-Moon Paddle As the sun sets and the moon rises, paddle away in a kayak from the hustle and bustle of the city. Experience the vivid tranquility of the ocean at night. No experience necessary. 1 session of 2.5 hours (various days) $45 Rowing 1 (introduction) Rowing is a low-impact aerobic sport that uses almost every muscle in the body and burns more calories than running or cycling. If you want a moderate workout and you d like to learn basic rowing techniques, theory and equipment handling, then try sculling, using one-person rowing shells with two oars. The sculling class includes two free hours of post-class rental time. 12 hours total $180 Surfing 1 (introduction) Hang 10 and ride those waves with style and confidence! Learn balance, timing, technique and ocean and wave mechanics. Surf s up, dude! 2 sessions of 2 hours $144 Sailing 1 (introduction) Beginning sailors will learn basic sailing theory, rigging, launching, maneuvering, recovery of a capsized vessel, right-of-way rules, and more. For students with little or no sailing experience. Plus, get two free hours of rental time when you ve completed class. Ahoy, matey! 4 sessions of 4 hours or 2 sessions of 8 hours (16 hours total) $224 Sea Kayaking 1 (introduction) Kayaking is gaining popularity as an activity that combines moderate exercise, sightseeing and adventure. Kayakers will learn basic strokes, rescues and boating safety in ocean-touring kayaks. 8 hours total $144 Stand Up Paddle Board Fun, relaxing, and a full-body workout? Yep, this latest craze delivers it all, which has made it a popular cross-training activity. Arrive Saturday or Sunday between 8 and 10 am, receive minutes of instruction and then paddle on your own for an hour. Completion of the clinic qualifies you to rent SUP boards during rental hours. 1 session of 1.25 to 1.5 hours $48 Please sign up at least three days before a class starts. You will not be able to change or cancel because of weather conditions. Classes will not necessarily be canceled due to rain; cancelation decisions will be based on safety issues, such as wind and lightning. 9 Dance There is new interest in dance as a way to improve both physical and cognitive function. We ve got 9 different types to chooose from! Tap Dancing Learn the great American art form of Tap Dancing. Start with a warm up and learn basic tap progressions that will become an entire routine in just five weeks! For both beginners and those with some experience, great exercise for both body and brain. Tap shoes recommended but not required. Cherylann Bellows has been dancing and tapping since age 7 and teaching since She studied at Broadway Dance Center and Musical Theater Works and has appeared in musicals such as Grease and Alice in Wonderland. She s energetic, patient, and makes dancing fun for all. 5 Wednesdays 8-9 pm $49 ClassID #34529 Sept. 16 thru Oct. 14 Flamenco Dance Fiery footwork, graceful arm and hand movements, and the gypsy art of handclapping called palmas. Elissa will introduce you to all of it. And yes, you ll learn to play those wonderful castanets (provided by Elissa). Women should wear a flared or full skirt and closed-toe shoes with small heels. No Flamenco shoes with nails please. Put a little Spanish spice in your life! (Se puede hablar español en esta clase.) Elissa Kyriacou has danced in Spain and the Canary Islands and was a member of Ballet Espanol de Los Angeles. She has a degree in dance and teaches Flamenco at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Gypsy Dance Dance with wild abandon! Fiery, passionate, exotic. Find your own gypsy spirit by getting acquainted with the beautiful sister dance forms of flamenco and belly dance. These two most popular forms of gypsy dance can make you feel like you ve Batista Gremaud & travelled to a faraway land, Elissa Kyriacou and put you in touch with both your body and spirit in a whole new way. Wear closed-toe shoes with a small heel; no flamenco shoes with nails please. Elissa Kyriacou has a degree in dance and is a professional dancer ( Najwa ) who has appeared on Cheers, Who s the Boss, and Entertainment Tonight. She s danced in 14 countries and is on faculty at UCLA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. 5 Thursdays 7--8 pm $49 ClassID #34516 Oct. 22 thru Nov. 19 Belly Dance This exotic and sensual dance form can tone your torso and will put you in touch with muscles you didn t know you had. Practice body isolations, undulations, shimmies and more to create a dance like no other. You ll be amazed at what your moves look like when you put on a shimmy belt, and you ll also get to try those enticing finger cymbals. No previous dance experience necessary; Elissa breaks it down in a way that beginners can easily follow. These magical little sculptures bloom and grow out of copper, gold or silver wire along with gemstone and glass beads that make it sparkle and shine. Each tree stands approximately 6-7 inches tall. First, you ll learn how to skillfully twist the beads onto the wire creating the leaves and branches. Then, you ll master the technique of artfully combining your branches to build the trunk.
