1 GAZI UNIVERSITY THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS STRATEGIC PLAN İ. INTRODUCTION Founded in 1982, the Department of International Relations of Gazi University aims to present general information about the department, the analysis of current situation, general assessment and strategic goals in this plan. The future plans and projects are also stated in the plan. İİ. GENERAL INFORMATION The Department of International Relations was founded in 1982 to educate in related fields and provide vast labor opportunities. With this purpose, besides the lectures on international relations, the lectures on economics and law also take part in curriculum. The diversity in both job opportunities and given lectures is believed to offer both opportunities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the other private and public sector institutions. Besides the theoretical information learnt in the lectures, by the help of retired ambassadors and ambassadors-inoffice, the students have chance to learn and evaluate real world politics than its experts, the Department of International Relations has master and doctorate programs with cooperation of The Institute of Social Sciences of Gazi University. İİİ. THE ANALYSIS OF CURRENT SITUATION AND GENERAL ASSESMENT 3.1. Mission, Vision, Values and Extent of Vision Our Mission Investigating the structure of international system and its functions, interactions among the states, international organizations and NGOs and examining these approaches in theoretical base, Gazi University the Department of International Relations takes educating students in consideration of Atatürk s principles and reforms and today s modern values as mission Our Vision To become a department which train individuals who can direct the future by making correct analysis parallel to the experiences from political history and to be mentioned as efficient and reputable both in national decision making levels and international decision making authorities Our Values 1- Transparency in both education and administration organization. 2- Lifelong education and training perspective. 3- Restfull working conditions and intensive material support 4.2. Strategic Goals To Support the Progress of Students 1. To bring students professional values connected to Ataturk s nationalism, democratic, secular and social law state. 2. To support social, artistic and cultural activities of students. 3. To enhance the interaction between students and instructors. 4. To provide opportunities to students for being researchers in an appropriate academic environment 5. To teach students theoretical and analytical knowledge with interdisciplinary approach for the purpose of understanding the dynamics of the world and finding solutions besides the expectations about their careers and skills on analytical thinking, reasoning and expressing their ideas. 6. To ensure for the alumni to express their ideas both written and verbal in an efficient way, to be related to history, sociology, psychology, law, economics and to know at least one foreign language with the asset of making good in human affairs Planning of Academic Staff 1. To make the ratio between students and academic staff at reasonable level by considering the curriculum and increase in the numbers of students. In the middle and long term targets, increasing the number of academic staff to the world standards is indicated. 2. To support the activities which help academic staff to improve themselves 3. To increase the number and quality of national and international publications per professor especially the average of the publications in national peer-reviewed journal to 2.0 in the longterm Enhancing Undergraduate and Graduate Programs
5 1. To increase the international mobility of the undergraduate students by ERASMUS Replacement Program. 2. To give chance students to follow the other international relations programs in the frame of replacement programs. 3. To spread out International Relations M.Sc. programs in accordance with local and global needs. 4. Besides supporting the activities regarding enhancing the quality of master programs with thesis, to take actions on opening new master programs without thesis. Three new master programs are aimed in short term. 5. To support the cooperation among scholars and thesis topics which help this cooperation. With reference to the low publication numbers, it is targeted to publish at least one publication from every thesis Raising the International Cooperation and Fame 1. To enhance institutional cooperation with universities, research and technology centers both in domestic and abroad. In this regard, arranging international congress and symposiums is the other goal. 2. To advance the relations with abroad and ensure internationally known lecturers to give lectures in our department. 3. To arrange advertisement activities to strengthen the image of international relations departments and help to department to be one of the best in this scope.
