1 1 Placement Ward 7 Vascular Unit Introduction to Placement area On ward 7 we care for patients undergoing emergency vascular surgery and interventional techniques. Some patients following their surgery will often go to HDU/ICU post op and then return back to ward 7 postop Geographical Layout Ward 7 is a 28 bed ward 4 x side rooms 2 x 7 bed Bay 1 x 10 bed Bay Each bay is single Gender (in line with DoH recommendations) 3 Placement Philosophy The nursing team within the ward is composed of a combination of various nursing grades. All staff have various skills/knowledge and nursing backgrounds, which help unite the team as a whole. Please feel free to use their knowledge and experience to support you throughout your working day. All staff are encouraged to undertake a link role within a specialist area/group that relates to the overall clinical needs of the ward. The link workers attend meetings then feedback information to their colleagues on the ward to increase staff knowledge in these areas. Participation in audit takes place as required within their role. The unit also supports nursing students. All students are supernummary to allow learning to take place effectively. All students are allocated to an appropriate Registered Nurse (RN) with both the relevant experience and teaching qualification to both support and assess them. Alongside this they will also be allocated to an associate nurse to support both the student and RN. However, the whole team is expected to support the student throughout their allocation. The Clinical Support Workers (CSW) form a valuable part of the ward team. Apprenticeship programmes (similar to NVQ training at level 2) are offered to all trainees. Time is given off the ward to attend lectures and to have sessions with their assessor so that the necessary training and documentation can take place.

2 4 Staff Facilities and Break Allocation Many Quality initiatives as part of the Trust s wider Quality campaign, alongside the Care Quality Commission initiative as part of the Government s strategy have been introduced throughout ward 7. To date these include Improving Quality Programme (IQP), Brilliant Basics calendar, Patient experience tracker questionnaire (PET), monthly Care Quality Rounds (CQR). There are similar themes that run through all these & there is an expectation all staff employed to the ward will have an understanding of all these themes plus all the quality initiatives in place as they form part of our daily practice. The aim of all these initiatives is to ensure all clinical areas become more patient focused, Improve patient safety plus quality of care to all our service There is a staff break room, with a fridge and microwave facilities and a cloak room on the main corridor. 4 Fem-Pop bypass-used to bypass diseased blood vessels above or below the knee Carotid Endarterectomy- a surgical procedure to reduce the risk of a stroke by correcting stenosis (narrowing) in the common carotid artery or internal carotid artery Femoral Endarterectomy- similar procedure to the above only this restores blood flow to the legs especially the femoral artery in the groin AAA repair-open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair is surgery to fix a widened part in your aorta, called aneurysm EVAR-endovascular aneurysm repair is an alternative to open surgery for the treatment of the abdominal aortic aneurysms Angiogram- an angiogram is an X-ray test that uses a special dye and camera (fluoroscopy) to take pictures of the blood flow in an artery/vein 8 Learning and teaching opportunities specific to clinical area / Spoke Placements Angioplasty- is a procedure used to widen blocked or narrowed arteries using a balloon or a wire mesh tube called a stent To help you meet your objectives you may want to consider working with the following teams: Vascular specialist nurse- Gareth Owen wound care management Vascular amputee nurse-michelle wound care management Theatres Physiotherapy Occupational therapy Complex discharge Vascular Labs- Angiogram, angioplasty, Thrombolysis management Tissue viability
