3 A Word from the Chairman A Word from the Managing Director TECNALIA Research & Innovation is a non-profit private Foundation whose mission is to transform Knowledge into GDP in order to improve People s quality of life by creating business opportunities for Companies. The foundation was established on 1 January 2011 and this second year we have strengthened the five pillars of our Strategic Framework: economic-financial sustainability, international relevance, research excellence, economic and social impact, and committed people. We have built an organisation that combines technology, tenacity, efficiency, courage and creativity has not been an easy year: the crisis has affected us, naturally, and our income has dropped by 4.5% down to 110M. Although we cannot consider the result to be satisfactory, it is reasonable in the current situation. We are aware that now we should be more committed than ever to the future and to overcoming these difficulties. We should pursue sustainability, being creative and adaptable, but without endangering our future as an organisation and as a technology benchmark for companies. Today more than ever, it is essential to rapidly transform knowledge into wealth and well-being; now is the time for Applied Research. Leading countries like the US, UK or Germany are strengthening their reindustrialisation and innovation strategies, taking the major European Research Centres as reference, including TECNALIA. From this position, we would like to play a part in helping Spain to have a competitive industry, with avant-garde products and productive processes, supported by cutting-edge technology. As TECNALIA is a project that is essential to society in general and companies in particular, I would like to thank the people that make up TECNALIA, companies, administrations, partners and/or collaborators, and all those who make TECNALIA what it is today and who boost us and help us to move forward. Thank you very much. Javier Ormazabal Chairman of TECNALIA We can safely say that in 2012 we obtained reasonable results in very complex and difficult economic climate. We have had a turnover of 110 million euros and positive cash flow of 5.8 million, allowing us to invest a total of 5 million euros to strengthen our scientific-technological infrastructure and equipment, in order to provide higher added value to more than 4,000 companies with which we work, and to society in general. In 2012 we requested 52 new patents, which means that we now have a portfolio of 286 active patents, distributed into 114 families. In our recent history, we have promoted many technology companies, out of which 25 are still active, and we still have a stake in 17. Last year these companies have had a turnover of 10.6 million euros and they employ 132 people. Regarding European projects, from 2007 until 31 May this year we contracted a total of 353 EU Seventh Framework Programme projects, leading 76 of them. Thanks to this we have gained a return of 132 million euros, and we are consolidated as the leading private R&D&I entity in Spain. Our international scientific-technological networks help to speed up the generation of knowledge and to increase added value both qualitatively and quantitatively. In 2012 we also designed Internationalisation Strategies and pointed out priority countries, taking into account how closely we will we work with each company and the technological challenges that we have to face in our different Business Divisions. We must promote our role as a technological antenna even further, in order to be able to identify technological trends and future challenges as fast as possible, and to gain the knowledge that is required, wherever it may be, and transfer it rapidly and effectively to our companies. We are facing 2013, which is also proving to be a very demanding year, with our responsibility towards nearly 1,500 people on staff in TECNALIA, knowing that our contribution will help to overcome the current economic situation through applied research, so that society will want TECNALIA to carry on existing. 9 We research to overcome Humanity s Challenges and transform them into Business Opportunities As we are aware that the world evolves rapidly, we get ahead of future challenges by turning technologybased business opportunities into competitive advantages through Applied Research. One of TECNALIA s differentiating features is its innovative operational model based on 7 fullyinterconnected sectorial Business Divisions, which allows it to provide a personalised and multidisciplinary attention for each client, offering its clients comprehensive solutions, making the most of the technological and marketing capacities of the entire organisation, with a clear focus on the client. FUTURE OF CITIES CLIMATE CHANGE This way of working is the best example our innovative spirit applied to an operational model, where cooperation works thanks to the transversality of teams, projects and clients collaborating with each other, combining experience, commitment and knowledge. TECNALIA is present in many sectors of society and, therefore, it is immersed in numerous projects and initiatives. In 2012, it generated more than 400 technology-based business opportunities for nearly 250 Companies. AGEING Low Carbon Energy ANNUAL Climate Change The fight against climate change considers both the mitigation or reduction of greenhouse emissions and the adaptation or reduction of the vulnerability of cities, infrastructures, resources, etc. to the consequences of the impact of climate change (flooding, extreme events, heat waves, etc.). TECNALIA participates actively in initiatives in both of these fields. REDUCTION OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE Adapting cities to Climate Change is one of the challenges that TECNALIA faces. As cities become more and more complex and multi-functional, their design should consider adaptation to climate change that enables economic losses and any disruption and interruption to their services as a result of such situations to be reduced. To do so, TECNALIA analyses the potential effects of the impact of Climate Change in the medium and long term, such as rising sea levels, the increased severity and frequency of heavy rainfalls, possible flooding, heat waves, etc. so that cities can incorporate measures and actions that enable the consequences of these adverse effects to be reduced. For example, over the past year a study into these characteristics has been carried out in Vitoria, one of the 20 cities chosen by the European Commission to form part of the EU Cities Adapt initiative. In addition to defining the indicated measures, this study is aimed at raising awareness and involving other European cities in the importance of preparing for climate change. In terms of adaptation to Climate Change, TECNALIA has advised cities such as Paris, London, Venice, Helsinki, Gothenburg or Istanbul on which initiatives should be developed by the municipal authorities for a better adaptation to the future. Volvo Factory of the Future Digital and Hyperconnected World Sustainable Transport Adapting cities to Climate Change is one of the challenges that TECNALIA faces. OUR CHALLENGES 17

10 FUTURE OF CITIES Low Carbon Energy The unstoppable process of global urban development gives the Cities a central role in the world s political and economic development, as areas promoting the creation of wealth and technological innovation. Cities must also face important challenges related to climate change, the environment, lack of resources, energy, mobility, insecurity and social problems. TECNALIA faces these challenges by integrating technologies and multidisciplinary knowledge to develop urban solutions for the Cities of the Future. CITY-LEVEL URBAN SOLUTIONS Right now, cities have all the elements to behave as living bodies. Their importance is evident: today, over more than 50% of the world s population lives in cities; and by 2025, it is expected for this percentage to reach 70%. In order to give due response to the transition into the Cities of the Future, TECNALIA is developing urban solutions at a city-level such as ECODIS: a R&D initiative for new products for SmartCities that will create a Technology test laboratory in Barakaldo, focusing mainly on energy saving. Promoted by a consortium of eight companies with TECNALIA s technological assessment, ECODIS will deal with issues such as mobility or city lighting efficiency. A remarkable difference if compared to other similar districts is the inventory of residual energy surplus that can be produced at the Barakaldo industries, which they will attempt to transfer to the urban network, as thermal or electric power. The current energy system is immersed in a phase of in-depth transition as a result of the need to decarbonise energy, increasing the percentage of renewable energies in the generation mix; reducing energy dependence, increasing the quality and safety of the supply and reducing the associated costs. TECNALIA develops innovative technologies for low carbon energy generation, better energy management, increased energy efficiency, etc. whilst considering the environmental impact throughout the life cycle, fostering the competitiveness of companies and ensuring sustainable socio-economic development in a globalised environment. OFFSHORE WIND POWER 25% CHEAPER In the field of Low Carbon Energy, TECNALIA is committed to marine energy, researching new solutions to harness energy from the sea. Existing offshore electric generators are difficult to upgrade above a certain power and new solutions are required to offer the system increased power, reduced weight and greater reliability. TECNALIA has designed an innovative, lightweight, robust and reliable 10 MW wind turbine based on a superconducting generator. Suprapower aims to provide an important breakthrough in offshore wind solutions. Superconductivity, on which Suprapower is based, enables wind turbines to be upgraded to 10MW through a radical reduction in the weight and size of the wind turbine head. These superturbines reduce the weight and size of the wind turbine by 30%, which leads to global cost reductions and reduced installation costs. Furthermore, it is estimated that a 25% cost reduction can be obtained in terms of structure and installation. ECODIS will create a technology testing laboratory in Barakaldo. These superturbines reduce the weight and size of the wind turbine by 30% OUR CHALLENGES 19

11 AGEING Factory of the Future Elderly population will be on the increase due to a rise in life expectancy. Therefore, more resources and care will be required for the elderly to enjoy quality of life in healthy and independent conditions while enabling their needs to be met at every stage of the ageing process. Ageing is also a business and diversification opportunity for companies. TECNALIA develops technological solutions to help us achieve this challenge. LUMBIA FIGHTING LOWER-BACK PAIN LUMBIA is one of TECNALIA s most recent initiatives in this field, a technology that can both prevent pain in the lumbar area and rehabilitate the damage that has already been caused. It is especially relevant since almost everyone suffers from lower-back pain at some point of their life and it is a problem that gets worse with work life and ageing. This new technology is fit into a belt that must be worn by patients in their lumbar area, it includes a series of sensors that detect when the back is in the wrong position. In these cases, the belt issues a vibration alert, reminding the patient to modify their posture. At the same time, this sensor sends all the collected information to a computer, so the relevant therapist can monitor the pathology. Lumbia will be available in the markets in 2014 and the Italian company BTS will be responsible for its international distribution. The increased cost of transport, energy, labour, changes in demand, customisation and need for expertise are some of the critical factors in the development of high added-value manufacturing, which is the key to economic development. TECNALIA s Factory of the Future proposal targets all the key issues. TECNALIA IS COMMITTED TO THE FACTORY OF THE FUTURE FOR THE AERONAUTICAL INDUSTRY In the current climate of quality and competition that affects the entire European aeronautical industry, new challenges have been identified to retain and consolidate leadership in the sector. One of them focuses on the integration of design and manufacturing tasks. The specification, development and use of new tools allows for improvements in the time between initial sketches and testing on real-scale prototypes. Another is the detection and elimination of potential design errors or incoherences that may arise in such complex projects and lead to huge losses of time and money. A third challenge is the optimised manufacturing and automated assembly of composite material parts, due to the difficulty associated with the use of CFRP and the extreme precision required in the automated handling of large parts. In this context, MAAXIMUS is one of the most significant projects in the European field, not only in terms of the technological challenge, but also in the number of partners, which amounts to 57, including cutting-edge companies in the aeronautical industry, research centres, universities and software suppliers, led by AIRBUS, in which we can reflect our activity. Its main objective is time optimisation in the validation of large-scale structures in highly resistant composite materials, through the coordination of structural development tasks, composite material technology and advanced manufacturing. TECNALIA participates actively in the project through the development of a new concept of flexible manufacturing, which includes strict precision. The solution has incorporated knowledge and experience in mobile systems, capable of carrying out various complex operations, such as multiple and precise drilling or the application of sealant. LUMBIA Lumbia will be available on the market in A new concept of flexible manufacturing OUR CHALLENGES 21

12 Digital and Hyperconnected World Sustainable Transport Change brings opportunities. We love to imagine how digital services will be in a world even more interconnected and interactive, or how smart products will be used in our daily life, in transport, energy, health services. And which new software and communication technologies will make it happen. We are committed to creating excellent business opportunities for our clients. WIMI5. AN INNOVATIVE WAY OF CREATING VIDEO GAMES WiMi5 is a solution to develop multi-player games to run on all devices (iphone, ipad, Android, web). The on-line video game sector is currently fragmented on several platforms, which means that each game needs to be reprogrammed for each device, hence increasing the cost and time to market. Using WiMi5, programming is only carried out once and published in all marketplaces/ stores, drastically reducing these costs. WiMi5 offers a development environment that greatly facilitates the creation and publication of games, as well as a server cloud that manages communication between them. With these two elements, a user without technical training can easily and visually create games that run on all devices. Once the game has been created, it is published on WiMi5 and in any other marketplace selected by the user. WiMi5 has passed the prototype stage and is currently in the product development phase. The objective now is to turn it into one of the benchmarks in a sector that invoices 20,000 million Euros in microtransactions in this type of games, through the Freemium/ Premium model. TECNALIA currently offers the possibility of investing in a company with enormous growth potential and a worldwide pioneer in video game technology. Having developed a prototype that verifies the feasibility of the technology, the next step consists of creating a start-up to develop and market this product which is aimed at an extremely attractive and constantly growing sector, namely that of video games. TECNALIA s contribution to Sustainable Transport focuses on major technology development (advanced electrification-hybrids-propelling, lightening, safety, comfort and smartisation ) required to ensure increased future mobility of people and goods overcoming huge challenges due to the need to reduce consumption and emissions, increase safety, improve co-modality and promote behavioural changes or optimise management and traffic flow. SARTRE. NEW FORMS OF MOBILITY AND COOPERATIVE VEHICLES Ever since land transport began to be developed, first of all with animal-driven vehicles and later using internal combustion, a driver has always been associated in the same way. It has never been possible to separate the concept of a vehicle in movement from a dedicated driver, who uses his/her time and skill to determine and control the power, direction, etc. in accordance with the road conditions. Nowadays, this aspect has changed thanks to the development of semi-autonomous vehicles. The SARTRE project, which includes partners such as VOLVO and RICARDO, is a clear example of how a driver can trust an external driver, on certain routes, to drive a virtual train of vehicles that will follow faithfully. The advantages lie in fuel savings, reducing the distance between vehicles whilst maintaining safety and comfort for occupants and reducing traffic congestion. The development of autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles, which until recently seemed to be impossible, is finding its place initially in R&D&I projects and shortly in real solutions used in everyday life. 13 INNOVATION STRATEGIES TECHNOLOGICAL SERVICES We contribute to the development of technology-based Innovation Strategies, pursuing Business growth and diversification. CREATING PROPRIETARY PRODUCT IN COLLABORATION Several companies from Gipuzkoa (AitzKoate, Aluminox, Goilaser, Modube, Ogei) were searching for new challenges and found difficulties in ensuring their competitiveness, since their activity was concentrated in mature industries with subcontracting work. Their goals were to diversify, eliminating their dependence as subcontractors; to increase their competitiveness by placing a product or service in the market that is both viable, sustainable and differentiating, and collaborate to generate critical mass. With the collaboration of the local development agency GOIEKI (which serves as a bridge between companies and TECNALIA), TECNALIA has managed to identify the capacities of companies to generate business opportunities. Focusing on copper recovery, since it is considered the material with the highest value for its exploitation. More specifically, TECNALIA is committed to manufacturing machinery for the recovery of this product. The result has led to the conceptualisation of a new product focused on the recovery of materials. We evaluate product conformity with respect to the technical specifications required by the markets and we help in their internationalisation. Thanks to our services, companies increase the added-value of their products, developing trustworthy brands. Services by industry Public Administrations Construction Energy Pharma & Health Iron & Steel Industry Mechanical Welding Industry Chemical Industry and Refineries Insurances Gaming Technologies Transport ITER HIRES TECNALIA FOR MATERIALS CHARACTERISATION AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES TECNALIA has been awarded the contract F4E-OFC-167 for the characterisation of materials at room and high temperatures within the ITER project (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). ITER is the greatest global project for the development of fusion as a source of energy; it is virtually unlimited, safe and environmentally sustainable and would imply an investment of approximately 16,000M. This international technological services contract awarded to TECNALIA was a Fusion for Energy (F4E) tender, a European agency that manages the European funds of the ITER project. More specifically, TECNALIA is responsible for planning, preparing, manufacturing the test specimens and assessing the results of the characterisation of the materials. The materials to be tested in the TECNALIA laboratories will consist of structural metals, composites, superconducting materials and welded joints. It is possible to identify the capacity of the companies to generate business opportunities. ITER is the greatest global project for the development of fusion as an energy source. OUR CHALLENGES 25

SMART ENERGY CITY SISAK (CROACIA) BEST PRACTICE IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT SOLUTIONS IN THE WORLD MAYORS FORUM The city of Sisak, with around 50,000 inhabitants, aims to be a pilot urban transformation case study for subsequent application throughout Croatia, whereby sustainability will be a key factor in this transformation. This initiative has been co-funded by the Global Environmental Fund and the Government of Croatia, with the coordination of the United Nations Development Programme in Croatia and it has been carried out by TECNALIA, the successful bidder in the international call for tenders. NANOTECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL SUPER-INSULATING MATERIALS TECNALIA is developing a new Monolithic Aerogel (superinsulating material) with better performance and lower manufacturing costs than the formerly existing ones for its implementation in more energy-efficient building solutions. This contributes to further improving the buildings of the city of the future and mitigating climate change. These materials are related to improved energy efficiency in buildings, urban regeneration and the transformation of existing infrastructures, climate change... TECNALIA PREPARES ITS NOMINATION TO FORM THE AGEING KNOWLEDGE INNOVATION COMMUNITY (KIC AGEING) The Knowledge Innovation Communities (KIC), created by the European Commission, are made up of scientifictechnological organisations whose task is to accelerate European research in specific fields. The KIC on Innovation for Healthy Living and Active Ageing will lead to the creation of the Ageing KIC in 2014 and TECNALIA is working on the nomination proposal in conjunction with other organisations. OPENING OF THE BIDELEK SAREAK TECHNICAL SHOWROOM AT TECNALIA On 22 May, in the presence of the Basque President, Iñigo Urkullu, and managers of the leading companies in the electricity distribution sector. BIDELEK SAREAK is an initiative by the Basque Government through the Basque Energy Board (EVE) and IBERDROLA, which will encourage the leading Basque manufacturers in the sector (ZIV, Ormazabal, Arteche, Ingeteam, MESA, Elecnor) to develop a new product and adapt it to the new Smart Grids technologies. SUCCESS LEVELS OF OVER 60% IN EUROPEAN CALLS Related to Energy-efficient Buildings PPP (EeB) and the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). The research fields addressed are mainly related to materials to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, technologies aimed at the energy rehabilitation of buildings and districts, including solutions based on ICTs and promoting the use of steel in the construction sector. THE BOTÍN FOUNDATION REWARDS A TECNALIA DEVELOPMENT IN ITS MIND THE GAP PROGRAMME Varstiff, a smart fabric material, that acts as an emergency immobiliser for accident victims. It can adopt different shapes and becomes rigid when vacuum is applied to it, reaching hardness levels equivalent to that of conventional plastic. The material returns to its flexible status when vacuum is removed. Varstiff has been designed by TECNALIA through the FIK initiative, and a new company will be set up to launch the product on the market thanks to the support of the Botín Foundation and Janus Developments.
