2 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Our program offers many and varied opportunities to interact with people and materials during the course of the day. Children will be encouraged to engage in hands-on experiences that lead to learning through discovery, recognition of logical consequences, organization of thoughts and facts, and problem-solving. The Kindergarten program at The Children s Center is designed to incorporate a combination of whole language and phonics as a basis for learning, along with developmentally appropriate learning experiences designed to benefit your child. Whole language consists of activities related to environmental print, big books, whole books experiences, as well as phonics and letter-sound recognition. Social skills will focus on using words to make thoughts and feelings clear to our friends and teachers. We will also work to develop skills of negotiation and conflict resolution, allowing children to interact in a positive manner with adults and their peers. Learning to follow directions, as well as striving to become an independent worker, are skills children will have the opportunity to accomplish daily. We will be using the Math Their Way curriculum, which supports the whole language approach to teaching. This curriculum involves active lessons, as well as topics of interest that are developmentally appropriate for the Kindergarten student. Each week, we provide three specials programs. Our movement program is taught by teachers from Livonia Ultimate Gymnastics. They are responsible for providing the equipment used during the course of the lesson. The music program provides a varied curriculum utilizing the piano or guitar, rhythm instruments, and vocal music. The campus library has a Children s Section from which the students may select one book per week. Additionally, the Kindergarten class participates in several on-campus programs and activities, including the Multi-Cultural Fair and College biology and education classes. Our Kindergarten program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The program cost is detailed below. Lunch, two snacks, and before and after school care (7:00 8:30 a.m. / 2:30 6:00 p.m.) are included in this amount. All children are expected to attend daily and arrive prior to the start of instructional time. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $ A portion of the registration fee will be applied to the tuition for December 19 23, No tuition payment will be necessary for these days. Kindergarten is the foundation for the child s school life. All classroom activities are planned to help the child form a realistic and positive attitude about her / himself and how s/he learns. This can be best achieved with parental support of the Kindergarten academic program at home. Communication between parent/student/school is essential to provide this important foundation in your child s education. Together, we can make this Kindergarten year an exciting and rewarding experience! The activities are flexible and can be omitted if the interest of the group is focused on another area of the curriculum for longer than the schedule time. SCHOOL CALENDAR School begins Tuesday, September 6, 2011 and ends Friday, June 15, There is no Easter week break. Our school year runs approximately 190 days per year. PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Conferences are scheduled in November with student evaluations provided in March and June. However, conferences can be scheduled by request at any time. VACATION Vacation days are only recognized during the summer when Kindergarten is not in session. SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE CHILDREN S CENTER KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES READING: Become increasingly fond of books and literature. Know the jobs done by authors and illustrators. Understand that sounds make words; words make sentences; sentences express thoughts. Learn to read pictures and signs. Recognize the letters of the alphabet in both upper and lower cases. Learn to differentiate between various sounds or letters. Enlarge his/her vocabulary. Be able to read his/her own name; own writing; basic sight words. Begin reading stories with which h/she is familiar, as well as develop strategies to read new material. Begin to make connections using prior knowledge to comprehend and/or predict story events. Learn important story elements: characters, settings, and events. Differentiate between various forms of text: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and environmental.
4 WRITING: Form upper and lower case letters. Express ideas using pictures, words, word clusters, and/or sentences. Develop skills to write using inventive spelling. Learn to leave space between words, write from left to right, and use appropriate ending marks. Brainstorm ideas to generate topics for dictation or informal writing. Attempt to revise writing based on teacher guidance and support. Attempt to spell basic sight words correctly and use these words frequently. Begin to develop a personal writing style and positive attitude toward writing. SCIENCE: Exhibit increased curiosity. Explore nature of plants and animals. Identify Earth materials and living and non-living things. Learn basics of weather and seasons. Explore the concepts of motion and mechanical objects. Learn how to observe, question, and conduct simple experiments. Make predictions; record observations and results. SOCIAL STUDIES: Know his/her name, address, and phone number (in print and spoken). Recognize family differences. Know his/her neighborhood. Be introduced to a selection of national historical figures and symbols (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, the current President, and the American flag). Understand citizenship, class rules, and fairness through group discussions and individual responsibility. Be introduced to geography and maps. Respect others. Follow classroom rules and routines. MATH: The child will demonstrate an understanding of Basic terms. Describe relations among objects or numbers, such as more than, less than, the same, different from, equal to, and a group or set. Spatial terms, such as opposites and sequencing. Comparisons with descriptive words, such as big/small, tall/taller/tallest, and lighter/heavier. Numerals and the ability to count to 100 by 1 s (or more); ability to count to 30 by 2 s, 5 s, and 10 s using grouped objects, as needed. Identify and write numerals up to 30. Order objects (1, 2, 3, ). Count orally to 100 by ones. Shapes. Recognize common geometric shapes; match objects by an attribute (size, color, etc.); create, describe, and extend simple geometric patterns. Time. Tell time to the hour. Know concepts of the day (morning, day, etc.) and the calendar (yesterday, today, months, weeks, etc.). Money. Identify coins, and begin an understanding of their value. Measurement. Estimate and measure formally. Patterning and the ability to make and repeat patterns. Graphing. Exhibit understanding, recording, and interpretation of various graphs. Addition and subtraction and recording mathematical thinking by writing simple addition and subtraction equations ( = 5 ; 7 2 = 5 ).
5 THE ARTS: Find enjoyment in Music, Movement, Drama, Creative Writing, and Art through various media. TECHNOLOGY: Become familiar with keyboard functions through the use of educational software. Research a variety of subjects using online resources. LISTENING: Take turns. Interact with the speaker by responding to what h/she hears. Listen purposefully to stories and sounds. Practice conversation. Listen to directions and follow them. SPEAKING: Take turns. Take part in class discussion. Participate in speaking activities (show and tell, songs, and plays). Interact with peers and adults. Retell a story. Express thoughts and feelings. HEALTH: Practice physical activities for both gross and fine motor skills. Understand basic health habits. Recognize nutrition basics. Understand the importance of safety. PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS: Identify problems. Identify solutions. Evaluate and use appropriate solutions. Predict outcomes. Recognize cause and effect. SOCIAL SKILLS: Have the ability to share. Interact appropriately with large and small groups. Exhibit patience. Be polite in behavior and speech. Learn to express feelings appropriately with peers and adults. Show respect to peers, adults, and property. Follow classroom rules and routines. PERSONAL SKILLS: Develop positive self-esteem.
