1 OCAC Learning Outcomes for the BFA in Craft Students who complete the BFA in Craft degree at OCAC will have achieved the following departmentally specific outcomes: Book Arts Department 1. Have achieved significant mastery in a number of the traditional or innovative approaches or techniques appropriate to their work. 2. Have been introduced to broadly-based historic and contemporary examples of excellent professional accomplishment at both national and international levels. 3. Have developed a significant sense of what constitutes a serious design project or work of art and a relatively coherent set of ideas and goals that are embodied in their work. 4. Demonstrate competency by developing a body of work for evaluation. 5. Acquire and demonstrate the use of specific terminology and vocabulary to speak about the book arts in general and specifically their own work. 6. Have achieved the knowledge and skills to enter their chosen field and be prepared for studio practice, studio production, community arts involvement, graduate school and employment. 7. Have an understanding of basic design principles and integrated approaches as related to book arts. 8. Have achieved a high level of skill in the use of basic tools, techniques, and processes to produce work from concept to finished object. Ceramics Department 1. Gain an understanding of basic design principles as related to ceramics 2. Gain an understanding of the applications of ceramics techniques. 3. Develop an active voice to competently and critically examine personal and nonpersonal artwork. 4. Introduction to broadly based examples of excellent professional accomplishment at both national and international levels. 5. Develop a significant understanding in the technical and creative use of ceramic materials and processes. 6. Students gain historical, traditional, and contemporary perspectives within the field of ceramics. 7. Students achieve a high level of skill in the use of basic tools, techniques and processes to produce work from concept to finished object. 8. Students demonstrate their competency by developing a body of work for evaluation. 9. Students learn general procedures and applications in the use of industrial, commercial production techniques in reference to their own creative work. 10. Students achieve significant competency in traditional or innovative approaches or techniques appropriate to their work, as well as personal conceptual direction. 11. Students gain the knowledge and skills to enter their chosen field. Drawing/Painting Department 1

2 1. Develop skills in drawing and painting observed subjects, creating both proportionally accurate and interpretive representations 2. Become familiar with basic abstraction principles, especially as they apply to observed subjects 3. Experiment with a range of traditional and contemporary drawing/painting approaches, including work habits and processes that result in both exploratory and resolved drawings/paintings 4. Gain skill in simple to complex two-dimensional design and composition 5. Learn to technically use a range of basic and experimental dry media in black and white and color 6. Learn to technically use both acrylic and oil paints, including associated mediums and materials 7. Become familiar with a wide range of substrates to work on papers, wood and wooden panels, and stretched canvases. 8. Become familiar with the working properties of color theory and how to both perceive and mix color media; and how to use color, as perceived and expressively 9. Become familiar with a range of historical and contemporary approaches to drawing, painting and mixed-media work 10. Learn to speak coherently about one s own work and the work of others and how to give and receive useful and appropriate feedback through the form of critique 11. Learn how to use a sketchbook (including writing processes); and then effectively use it with regularity 12. Work fluently in at least one drawing/painting media (of student s own choosing); and feel adequately comfortable with a range of other related dry/wet media 13. Know what subjects, ideas and issues engage them fully, and how to use that interest to propose and then generate a body of visual work; be able to sustain interest in their concept/plan for the length of the project Fibers Department 1. Understand basic design principles and develop solutions to design problems related to fibers medium. 2. Understand the possibilities and limitations inherent in fiber materials and processes in terms of their physical and conceptual nature. 3. Develop a balance between technical proficiency and conceptual processes and a coherent set of ideas and goals which are embodied in their work. 4. Learn advanced skills in the use of the tools, techniques and processes to create work from concept to end product. 5. Demonstrate competency by developing a body of work for evaluation. 6. Be able to apply historical and contemporary art and cultural theory to their work. 7. Develop an ability to effectively communicate an evaluation of their personal work as well as critique work of others. 8. Achieve the knowledge and skills of innovative thinking, problem solving and resourcefulness. 9. Be prepared for studio practice, studio production, community arts involvement, graduate school and employment. Foundations Department 2

3 1. Develop basic drawing skills, including the ability to draw accurately what is perceived and a familiarity with most basic black and white drawing media 2. Develop a basic understanding of color theory and the practice of using color (media and composition) in artwork 3. Learn what creates strong two-dimensional compositions and how to experiment with compositional choices 4. Learn what constitutes solid three-dimensional design and construction; and work with a wide array of media, including traditional and non-traditional 5. Become familiar with the concept of installation and have some experiences creating work in that venue 6. Create a working understanding of the formal (abstract) elements that comprise all visual work, whether 2D or 3D 7. Gain experience with complex problem solving, both formally and conceptually 8. Learn increasingly refined levels of appropriate craftsmanship and finishing skills, regardless of media 9. Increase understanding and competency with concepts, personal style and expressive choices 10. Develop excellent verbal and critique skills, including the ability to give and receive useful and appropriate feedback through the form of group critiques 11. Develop productive and inventive ideation habits that will follow them throughout their education and beyond 12. Understand the rudiments of proposing, and/or putting together a small body of work in the form of a series 13. (Begin to) learn how to budget time and effort as it relates to design and outcome of both assigned and self-proposed studio work General Studies 1. The ability to think, speak and write clearly and effectively. 2. An informed acquaintance with the mathematical and experimental methods of the sciences, the main forms of analysis and the historical and quantitative techniques needed for understanding the workings and developments of modern society. 3. An ability to address culture and history from a variety of perspectives, e.g. political, economic, literary, etc. 4. Basic understanding of and experience in thinking about moral and ethical problems. 5. The ability to respect, understand and evaluate work in a variety of disciplines. 6. The capacity to explain and defend one s views effectively and rationally. 7. Understanding of and experience in art forms other than the visual arts and design. 8. Enhanced problem-solving skills, including the ability to perform research. 9. Acquisition of the necessary practical skills to thrive as contemporary artists in the contemporary legal, cultural and economic arenas as they relate to art and craft. Metals Department 1. Have achieved significant mastery in at least one of the traditional or innovative approaches or techniques appropriate to their work. 3

Have developed a significant sense of what constitutes a serious design project or work of art and a relatively coherent set of ideas and goals which are embodied in their work. 4. Demonstrate their competency by developing a body of work for evaluation. 5. Have the ability to examine their artwork and that of others critically. 6. Have achieved the knowledge and skills to enter their chosen field. 7. Have an understanding of basic design principles as related to jewelry and metalsmithing. 8. Understand the possibilities and limitations of materials used in the fabrication process. 9. Have achieved a high level of skill in the use of basic tools, techniques, and processes to produce work from concept to finished object 10. Have gained an understanding in designing and executing jewelry and metalwork using a variety of metals and other materials. 11. Have achieved a functional knowledge of the basic business practices and the place of jewelry and metals within the history of art. Photography Department 1. Students attain a significant level of proficiency with traditional camera and darkroom skills, alternative (19 th Century / Non-Silver ) photographic processes, and digital imaging techniques that is appropriate to their level of study. 2. Students develop a thorough understanding of basic aesthetics, design principles, and history of art as related to photography. 3. Students develop a strong personal creative practice based on ideation and conceptual development, the application of aesthetics and design principles, project troubleshooting, and critical evaluation as they strive to create significant works of art. 4. Students develop and maintain a mutually supportive community in the photography studio that encourages critical participation through open discourse while preparing them to enter the broader community of local, national, and international artists as they enter the professional world.. 5. Students develop the skills necessary to participate in honest critical evaluation of their own work and that of their peers. 6. Students develop a functional understanding of the necessary skills, techniques, and business practices to successfully enter their chosen field. 7. Students will have been introduced to examples of excellent professional accomplishments in their chosen field at the local, national, and international levels and are encouraged to critically engage the work as they are able. Wood Department 1. Have understanding of the possibilities and limitations inherent to the medium of wood 2. Have developed skills in the use of the basic tools, techniques, and processes to produce work from concept to finished object 3. Have achieved a significant level of mastery in approaches and techniques appropriate to the student s work 4. Have created a wide variety of objects in the medium of wood 4
