Course Description: Advance Placement Chemistry is a rigorous college level course, designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. Students will study the topics later outlined. Through a variety of lesson formats and assignments, students will have the opportunity to develop their problem solving skills, laboratory techniques, and written and verbal communication skills. Goals of the course: *Students are prepared to be critical and independent thinkers who are able to function effectively in a scientific and technological society. 1

2 *Students will be able to analyze scientific and issues using scientific problem solving. *Students will emerge from this program with an appreciation for the natural world. *Students will be able to make an acceptable score on the AP Chemistry Examination in May. *In each laboratory experiment, students will physically manipulate equipment and materials in order to make relevant observations and collect data; use the collected data to form conclusions and verify hypotheses; and communicate and compare results and procedures (informally to other experimenters, and also in a formal, written report to the teacher). Demonstrate the ability to follow required laboratory safety procedures. Demonstrate responsibility for their learning. *Adapted from, AP Central College Board. AP Chemistry Syllabus 1. Retrieved on August 19, 2010 from; 1.pdf Grading Policy: Grades will be calculated based on the following scale: Test / quizzes 55% Class work / Labs 25% Homework / Chapter outline 20% A = 100% - 90% B = 89% - 80% C= 79% - 70% D = 69% - 60% E =below 60% Classroom Procedure: 1. Class begins promptly when the tardy bell rings. 2. I dismiss you, not the bell. Sometimes there are announcements and reminders before you leave. When announcements are being given in class or on the PA system, students must remain quiet and listen. 2

3 3. Ask questions if you are unsure about anything. 4. During the first week, classroom procedures for turning in assignments, picking up graded work, tests, quizzes, and laboratory activities will be discussed extensively. It is imperative the students binders are properly maintained for notes, homework, class work, and other assignments. Binders will be checked and graded periodically. 5. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively during and outside of class. However, tests, and quizzes are independent work. Students are not allowed to collaborate on test and quizzes. Quizzes are reviewed after they are done. If you miss a quiz, see the teacher about making it up immediately. 6. Class attendance is essential for success in this course and on the AP exam in May. We will be covering materials at a rapid pace, so it is important for you to complete your assignments on time, use your textbook and review notes often. 7. If you are absent for whatever reason, it is your responsibility for getting all the missed information. Extra copies of notes and assignments will be placed in the Assignment Box. Do not hesitate to contact your classmates to ask about missed assignments. Students get one day for each day absent (excused). If you have questions or concerns, see the teacher promptly for clarification and resolution. If concerns remain unresolved without the teacher s knowledge, then it will be assumed that the assignment is late and a zero grade will be assigned. 8. Extra credit opportunities are available to help raise your grade. Students with missing assignments will not be able to take advantage of these opportunities. Getting Help: I am available Monday through to Thursday 3:30p.m until 4:30 p.m. You may also me with questions. Do not wait until you are overwhelmed to seek help. Academic Honesty: Students are expected to produce their own work at times. If you are caught cheating you will be given a zero grade and the school district policy on cheating will be followed.
