Please read the following instructions to learn how to use this dictionary most effectively. Instructions for Using this Dictionary Markings: Ref: This is a reference marker - an English explanation of the meaning or use of a Turkmen word. Lit: This means literal. When used as part of a reference tag, it explains the word-for-word translation from the Turkmen. When put in parenthesis after an English word, it indicates that only the literal meaning of the English word applies. Lit. and Fig. This indicates that a word can be used literally or figuratively. (r) This indicates a Russian word. For example: ruçka(r) n. pen Ex: This is means example. Examples are given in both Turkmen and English to show how a word may be used. For example: saklamak v. hold [held, held]. Ex: Ol elinde kiçi guş saklady. He held the small bird in his hand. Example sentences are only listed in the Turkmen-English half of the dictionary. If you look up a word on the English-Turkmen side and do not know how to use it, try looking for an example on the Turkmen-English side. Sometimes phrases are not listed by their first word. For example: expression (fixed...) n. añlatma (durnukly...). The English phrase is fixed expression and the Turkmen phrase is durnukly añlatma. If a word is followed by parenthesis that contain an ellipsis ( ) then it indicates such a phrase. Sometimes, a single word in one language will be translated as a phrase in the other language. 5 Turkmen English Entries 1. If a Turkmen word has more than one meaning, it will be listed more than once. For example: aýna n. glass (the material). aýna n. mirror. aýna n. window The word aýna has three meanings: glass (the material), mirror, and window. Therefore, it is listed three times. 2. If there are multiple English synonyms for a single meaning of a Turkmen word, they will be listed like this: aldamak v. lie, deceive The English words lie and deceive are synonyms both mean aldamak. 3. If a Turkmen word has different pronunciations with different meanings, the pronunciations are given in brackets. For example: pil [pil] n. elephant. pil [pi:l] n. shovel, spade English-Turkmen Entries 1. Many English words have more than one meaning. For English words with more than one meaning, a short note in English is placed in parenthesis after the word, explaining which meaning is represented by the accompanying Turkmen word. For example: capital (i.e. of a country) n. paýtagt. capital (i.e. savings) n. maýa. The English word capital has two meanings: paýtagt and maýa. The notes in parenthesis explain to English speakers which Turkmen word applies to which meaning. 2. If there are multiple Turkmen synonyms for a single English word, they will be listed after the English word. For example: again adv. täzeden; adv. ýene; adv. ýene de. 4. If an English verb is irregular, its second and third forms are given in brackets. For example: begin [began, begun] v. başlamak. How much? How to? Quick and Easy Sentences Structures You Will Need Two Notes on Verbs: Turkmen verbs are defined by their verb stem, or the root that comes before the suffix. For example: gitmek (to go). Git root, mek suffix (to). In this dictionary, all verbs will be in their infinitive form and will end in mek or mak. Thus, below you will be asked to insert the verb root. That is what comes before the suffix. Also, if the verb uses mak, use the suffix with the (a) or (y) in it.
