3 1841 Born near Naperville, Illinois on 16 May Came to Algonquin at young age First Civil War Volunteer was Henry Keyes to enlist from McHenry County Henry Keyes received marriage license No to marry Lottie Morton Henry Keyes was elected clerk for Algonquin Township. Town clerk for12 years. Henry Keyes was carpenter who built homes of Fred Perry (1879), William Rattray (1879), John Helm (1881), Fox River Bridge (1882), William Morton, Sr. (1883), Chunn Building (1884) Chapell Mansion (1885), Ford School (1886), John Johnston (1890) (Note: Many of the buildings still exist in the village. Chapell Mansion was destroyed by the the Great Fire of 1895.) 1893 Elected Justice of the Peace for Algonquin Elected county treasurer by majority of 900 votes Build the village electric plant which had two dynamos. Sold the plant to Dorr Thomas after three months. Fifteen businesses were wired for electricity 1906 Henry Keyes had one of the first telephones installed at his residence Henry Keyes with John Peter registered 123 men for the service during the beginning of WWI Henry Keyes was the first to install radio in his home in the village Charlotte Morton died on 1 May 1926 at St. Joseph s Hospital, died 4 weeks before her husband Henry George Keyes died on 28 May 1926 and was buried in Algonquin Cemetery. Sgt. Henry George Keyes Page 3 Chapell Mansion, Built 1884 Henry G. Keyes Obituary Henry George Keyes died yesterday at his home in Algonquin after a long illness. He was an honorary member of the B.P.O.E. lodge at Woodstock, and was also a member of Veteran s post, No. 49, G.A.R., having served with the Union army from 1861 to the end of the war with Co. F, 15th Illinois volunteers. He was married to Charlotte Morton in May, 1861, but his wife preceded him in death four weeks ago. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. 4 Obituary Henry George Keyes Henry Gorge Keyes died at his home in Algonquin,, Friday, May 28, at the age of 85 years. Sgt. Henry George Keyes Page 4 He was born near Aurora, Illinois, on May 16, 1841 and came to Algonquin at an early age where he followed lthe carpenter trade for a number of years. He was married to Charlotte Morton on May 30, 1869, who preceded him in death four weeks. One daughter was born to that union who died in infancy. Mr. Keyes was one of the first to answer Lincoln s call in 1861, enlisting in Company F, 15th Illinois infantry and receiving his honorable discharge on June 14, 1864, seeing service in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Corinth, Hatchie River and Jackson. He also served one term as county treasurer of McHenry County 1894 to 1898, and one term as sheriff 1898 to He as served several terms as police magistrate and justice of peace. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 30 from his late home at Algonquin. Interment was at Algonquin. Services were in charge of the Elgin Post G. A. R. and Woodstock Lodge B. P. O. Elks 1043, Rev. H. L. Hornscom offering prayer. Besides a host of friends, he leaves to mourn his loss a nephew, Scott L. Morton of Chicago, who was raised by them from infancy, and several other nephews and nieces.
